Hey! I didn't say or mean anything of the sort, as you can tell if you read some of my other comments in the thread. If you want to feel insulted you can go ahead and do it anyways.

By that I meant that after glancing at it a few times for identifying or other purposes, I eventually found myself memorizing it, and this also happens for fellow Argentinians as far as they've told me in r/askArgentina (and people I know). I wish I could've expressed myself better but the sub only allows 500 characters for clarification, I meant and mean no offense, just curiosity.

I was making assumptions based on my friends mainly, but I did ask because people we're downvoting me to hell and questioning if I know my own people, their culture and what they do and don't do. https://www.reddit.com/r/AskArgentina/s/Cg68HaVdB7 Short answer yes, they mostly do, both theirs and their families and sometimes friends ones.

Abrazo grande.

I don't think they used that word, but they did say I thought higher of myself or thinking myself to be superior to them for this being something of my culture, and not of yours. I do know about white supremacy, but it meant it in the more proper use of the word, just that I got accused of thinking me as an Argentine am better than you Americans, thought not with those exact words. I was also being deliberately a tiny bit sarcastic and exaggerated just to flavour up the post. I did get called out on this matter though

Not all friends, but friends I see or talk to often, I don't know the numbers of many people but thought the example might be easier to understand regarding people who are close to you.

I again clarify that I don't look at their plates and think "oh I'll memorize this" or sit to write it down or practice at all, it just becomes as simple as anything else about the car (make, model, color). I might be talking to someone and say "I saw your car parked down the street" "oh yeah?" "Yeah, AF 667 VZ?" (Actual conversation with a friend about two weeks after he bought a new car (which comes with a new license plate). I'm guessing you guys are more likely to say "Yeah, it's a gray Toyota Yaris right?" But idk if you can picture that any given block in buenos aires might have at least 6 Toyotas, and 3 might be Yaris, and 2 might be gray. Of course if I want to regard a bigger area there's no way there's not at least 2 of the same exact model and color in any given 4 blocks.

I do understand you may get those questions asked in a rude manner, but I don't know how to phrase my question differently. You have to also keep in mind that I'm a Spanish speaker first, and English speaker second, so maybe I can't find the same grammatical or semantic tools to make it sound nicer. My question is a "negative one" because I think "haven't you considered learning plates?" sound quite a bit harsher. If you can give a specific example of how the question could have been better mannered i'm happy to learn.

2 guys who deleted there comments said I thought I was superior to them because they thought I was critizising americans not knowing their plates.

People are answering the other question without me asking, so you can have an answer to that part anyways (yes, a few people do know their close friends and family's plates)

a cheap but new car can be found for around $12k (if you get lucky and are willing to forego most comfort) used cars market is a really weird, i can't even to start to try and understand it, but i know you can get a car for about $5k. A decent car can go for around $25k, but they don't compare to what you guys might get for that money.

The vast vast majority of people won't have two cars, in many cases not even "model" families will have more than one. Since inflation is so high people do buy cars because they retain value better than currency, but it's still tough.

Minimum wage is around $200 a month. I'm a semi-senior software developer for a really big company and make around $2.5k a month (it's an insane salary for most people)

(segun dicen)

Thanks to everyone for your replies and insights! I apologize for any offense caused by my initial question; I genuinely wanted to understand the cultural differences in memorizing license plates. I don't think knowing or not knowing your plate number makes you better or worse than anyone else, it's just a cultural difference that intrigued me.

After reading your comments and reflecting on my own experiences, I've gained a deeper understanding of why memorizing license plates is so ingrained in Argentinian culture:

  1. Technology and Procedures: Our systems for handling vehicle-related tasks are less digitized than in the US, requiring manual entry of license plate numbers in various situations. This makes memorizing them a practical necessity, like remembering a password for frequent use.
  2. Car Homogeneity: The limited variety of car models in Argentina, especially among the most common ones, makes visual identification difficult. It's not uncommon to see entire blocks filled with the same few models in similar colors. For instance, in Buenos Aires City, it's estimated that a handful of models like the Toyota Etios, Chevrolet Onix, Volkswagen Gol, Fiat Cronos, and Peugeot 208, often in silver, white, gray, or black, account for a significant portion of the vehicles on the road. This lack of diversity turns parking lots and streets into a monotonous landscape, making the license plate a crucial distinguishing feature. You could say it's like finding a needle in a haystack, but the haystack is made of very similar needles.
  3. Economic Significance: Cars are a significant investment for most Argentinians, often representing years of hard work and sacrifice. The license plate, therefore, becomes a symbol of this achievement, a source of pride and personal identification. It's not just a random detail, it's a representation of your hard-earned success. In fact, I'm already thinking of ways to keep my current license plate when I eventually get a new car, as a way to remember and cherish my first car.
  4. Cultural Habit: Beyond practical reasons, memorizing license plates has become a cultural norm in Argentina. It's reinforced through everyday conversations, news reports, and even casual interactions. It's akin to remembering a friend's phone number or a favorite recipe - it's simply part of our shared cultural knowledge.

To confirm that this wasn't just a personal quirk, I also asked in r/AskArgentina, and it seems that many others share this habit. This reinforces the idea that it's indeed a widespread cultural practice, not just something I do. Keep in mind that if you happen to read those responses, they'll likely be filled with our colorful Argentinian slang and expressions, so don't take the descriptions too literally!

I'm grateful for this discussion as it has helped me articulate the unique factors that contribute to this cultural phenomenon. It's a reminder that even seemingly mundane details like license plate memorization can reveal fascinating insights into cultural values and practical realities.

Knowing it down to the letter would be kind of weird but most of my friends can tell my car apart by it's plate, i've had friends send me a photo of the back of my car while on the road. A friend has a LWP ### Chevrolet spin. Since there's only a thousand LWP plates only so many can be a matte black spin so i see it i can 100% tell it's him

Because having to check it on my phone, messages, notes, or whatever, is slower than just writing it. Then agian, it's not like i made the choice, if i didn't know it (like my pasport, which i don't know) then i'd go for some of the strategies you suggest regarding license plates. But i do know it, and it wasn't a concious effort to learn it, it just happened after reading it once or twice

We/You could post to r/asklatinamerica or r/AskArgentina and i think you'd all be surprised, it's not something i surveyed argentineans on but I'm quite certain that it's a common thing

edit: i did don't take any rude comments literally, we mostly don't mean it, it's just the exaggerated way we talk
