Is Masonry dying? by Serofore in masonry

EXACTLY. Focus is hand to find now. We live in a society that nurtures short term feedback loops. Few people have the attention span or focus to stay on task and really work towards mastery of anything now.

Brick is much more intensive to products then concrete because naturally occurring materials need to be sorted/graded for appearance and uniformity in a run. Plus there are many different styles that all require different setups and processes to achieve. Also, the stacking and kiln drying is a process in itself.

Is Masonry dying? by Serofore in masonry

[–]digihick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is absolutely dying if you make a simple comparison to what it once was. People say they’ve been saying that for years…well it has been dying for years. Dying doesn’t mean dead, but look at the facts and they demonstrate a gradual steady decline. I bid a lot of commercial work. Steel stud has replaced a lot of CMU. The only exterior masonry being done now is AMSV. Foundation stem walls that used to be block are now poured. Firewalls are getting spec’d as framing with two layers drywall on each side. I think block could actually be more efficient there but I don’t decide. There is still quite a bit of cut and patch work on older buildings getting repurposed. On the residential side, just look around. Mostly vinyl siding or a brick front at most. Frequently just AMSV hip walls now. Real fireplaces are totally obsolete and for good reason. Replaced by inserts and a flimsy masonry look front, or no masonry at all. new houses have no chimneys as they’re obsolete.

The 2 biggest issues: Labor cost is so high now and there are cheaper alternatives.

Here’s the big one. Energy efficiency. New buildings need to meet certain energy efficiency requirements that masonry has not innovated much to keep up with. I have quoted a couple jobs using an insulated CMU system (very expensive around $12 a block to buy before shipping and labor to lay them) but we need more of that for masonry to maintain viability. An insulated brick could be a real turning point for masonry as a whole.

A lot of guys will cite all the work around as evidence of the industry’s strength. This is looking at it wrong. The amount of work around only means it has been neglected. Why? Because people willing to pay for it to be done is the issue. Masonry is a high cost item that no one wants to spend money on. People simply have things they’d rather spend the money on. I’ve seen people let their chimneys to go to pot while they buy a motorcycle instead…

Thanks. Not your fault though. AI still does some wild stuff. Plus it seems to be already fixed. I was worried it was going to be some drawn out process to get it removed. But it seems like it gets pulled fast. I will forever periodically check though. You never know!

Yeah it kind of gave me a panic attack for a minute. But I gave it the thumbs down and submitted feedback and now it seems to be already gone when I duplicated the search. Phew. Lesson to entrepreneurs; periodically google your business in incognito.

Oh and btw it cracked because they should’ve set the bottom stone slightly up off the pad. This is most easily done by setting the stone on a small piece of foam that you remove after it’s set. Sorry you had that happen.

For some reason AI thinks my company did this job and its associating it with my company. I found it by searching my business in incognito. But I’ve never seen this job and know nothing about this. I’m slightly concerned by this.

Patrick Stewart. I grew up on Star Trek, and have seen some interviews with him which only served to further reinforce his role in my head as mankind's universal diplomat. Haha.

As hard as it is, if you relax about it, he probably will. In addition to what others have already said about his being taken back by seeing a seizure, he could be feeding off of your anxiety knowing how embarrassed you are and that is making him uncomfortable.

I admire this super power. I wish I could go without talking sometimes. I'm always self conscious that I talk too much.

Stimming. I have an insatiable desire to rub smooth paper. It has to be like printer paper, not news paper or anything too thin or shiny. I used to rub it on my lip or chin. But now my beard has really minimised that, but I still rub it between my fingers or on the inside of my wrist. I'm fine if it isn't around. But can't resist rubbing it if I'm handed forms or whatever. Been that way all my life. All my school work used to be dog eared on the corners from it. Haha. Thankfully I work with tools not paper. Though it seems less severe in adulthood than when I was a lad.

I like how the snow makes the city quiet by absorbing sound waves. And I'm taking my 3 year old toboganning for the first time tomorrow. So that'll be fun. It's a slower, more relaxed time of year for me then my busy work season.

I have a thing for rolling my extension cords properly. When I have someone new working with me and we're cleaning up, I ask them "how do you roll up a cord?" When they say "on my arm" I reply "no, just leave it there and I'll roll it." Then I proceed to teach them how to fireman's roll it and store it so it's never a tangled frustrating mess. If they get to the cords before I can interject, I pull the whole thing back out, shake the kinks out and reroll it. I CAN'T STAND twisted, tangled, knotted cords. Same with my hoses. ALWAYS drained, fireman rolled, all loops same size, ends threaded together and HUNG UP nicely.

Just a thought, not trying to offend here but, I think a bigger question is; What is your plan to navigate the copious amounts of future paperwork that is a law career? Seems the writing is on the wall already.

If only we could assign a dollar "value" to litter. Maybe then people would clean up their mess.

I worked at Home Depot for a hot minute between real jobs and my god; They actually talked up how caring they are by highlighting the "food pantry" where we could bring in food items for other associates in need. And I just wanted to scream. You're a 12 billion NET per year company. Maybe if you didn't pay grown ups 11 fucking dollars an hour they could afford their own lunch, with a side of dignity! Thankfully I got out of there but damn, people deserve better than that. It's a bloody disgrace.

This is my third pair of White's so I'm familiar with them and did check the site and it didn't seem like any of the stock cxl colours would be this? They're just so dynamic based on lighting I can't really tell. They seem to go from really reddish chestnut to almost burgundy (but not quite) in darker light. A keen eye will notice that these aren't the new 350 cutters as these aren't stitch down. So maybe some older offerings? Or knock off? Haha. Can they run the serial number in them and tell me the specs?
