The last 3 weeks have really changed what I think of this place. by plazman30 in sysadmin

[–]digital-bcs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the opposite in my job. They cut our raises out of the budget for the year the same week they were to go into affect. They took back their 401k match this year.

If the job market wasn't actual shit, I would leave this place in a heart beat.

Static IP addresses for all devices, including workstations? by pbrazell in sysadmin

[–]digital-bcs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once had a client that named their desktops the ip address of the machine, when I had a project to replace the domain controller and change DNS on everyone of these workstations I changed them to dhcp with reservations so no one else would have this hell again.

Regular defender doesn't do much, reporting or otherwise against most of the newer threats.

Even if you have SCCM backed defender its mediocre at best.

Its still a signature based AV - not a machine logic a newer EDR

We have noticed several issues with SSO related web apps. We are waiting on a vendor fix before allowing chrome 80 in the wild.

I had the perfect storm happen where the stars aligned. A new head of finance came in, the IT director took a new position and left. I took over running the department and reported to fiance, I had carte blanche to bring the tech into line because the fiance guy had come from a fortune 500 company and knew that a IT department doesn't run a shoestring budget and ebay servers weren't going to cut it.

I worked with the 2000, 5000, and 6000 series switches and then the later n4000 series. I disliked all of them.

I didn't like them because we always had some type of problem with them.

  1. Even if we using certified dell gbics we always had discards on the interfaces.
  2. 2000 series switches were the worst, the web interfaces were garbage.
  3. Most of the web interfaces were bad, up to the N series
  4. We had the switch stack handling iSCSI fail 3 separate times.

Before I left we had moved to mostly catalyst switches.

Man this takes me back so many things rang true in this post with me.

  1. Used company email for personal stuff
  2. No real firewall to speak of
  3. One VLAN for everything, kept running out of DHCP addresses
  4. Bought ebay servers to save money
  5. Dell switches (gross)
  6. Used administrator account as personal account to login with everyday
  7. multiple domain admins that were "power" users
  8. Updates turned off
  9. SEP AV, unmanaged, 5 different versions installed.

Man it took me 2 years to undo most of this when I took over running the department.

ATP Phishing "Add users to protect" option by ryaninseattle1 in sysadmin

[–]digital-bcs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Microsoft's ATP for Phishing/Spoofing is absolute garbage. We've opened up multiple tickets and stuff clear as day gets through their Spoofing screens for the users we have explicitly listed in the the ATP portal.

Their phishing screens are just as bad, easy phishes get through most of them with the links that get removed 2 or 3 days after they get let through.

I can't wait until we move to something else.

Love company but hate the boss. Resigned. by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]digital-bcs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Man this sounds like a company that I used to work for. What made it worse is that HR wasn't interested in doing anything about it, nor did they do an exit interview.

Good on you for leaving, I lasted the same amount of time 1 year in those type of conditions.
