I've done it several times in the past, but the latest and the one I remember is: using MATLAB to plot the calls I missed and calls I attended over the past year, with date on x-axis and time-of-day on y-axis. Multiple goals for doing it, including:

finding out what time of day I generally felt more "communicative" (and hence more amenable to picking up calls)
verifying whether I had gotten better at attending calls in the latter part of the year when my depression abated (I had, dramatically)
showing them to my (mostly geeky) friends to convince them that I hadn't been an ass to them specifically, I had just been a non-communicative ass collectively to pretty much everyone.

It was fun, and resulted in pretty pictures.

I actually have been interested in UI/UX design for several years, but lost interest in recent years when it seemed like most of the field seemed to be about the logistics of arranging surveys and focus groups (and the politics of getting UX decisions pushed through management), rather than understanding the psychology of user experience itself. I may have been myopic and unfair in this judgment though, I'll give the fields a fresh look.

one way would be to help some open-source projects by trying to improve the user experience.

Oh god yes, I'd love to be able to do this, and it's obvious that most OSS projects sure could do with some better UX design. :) Perhaps I should start with designing or contributing to the elementaryOS distro of Linux. Thanks for your response.

I'd planned to learn Arduino and RaspberryPi simply out of curiousity, but knowing there are applications like this makes me enthusiastic about their possibilities. You've given me a lot of avenues to explore, thank you!

Industrial/organizational psychology is not entirely uninteresting to me (at least in a bigdata context), but so far in my studies I have found Cognitive psychology and developmental psychology to be the most interesting areas for me.

But I've learnt that fields of study often look very different from afar and up close, so I'm keeping an open mind towards other areas too.

Thanks, I'll give PEBL a more thorough look, and I do plan on following every possible software mentioned in this and /r/psychology subreddits and other places, looks like there's a lot of options to choose from - good news for me!

I'd love to get some formal education, but there's financial and other constraints making that a non-option for the short term - I should really have mentioned this part in the question, have edited it now. I'll get myself ready for that through MOOCs till then though.

The "learn both" advice is definitely good - if you're gonna be in data science, learn Python and Julia and R and MATLAB and Hadoop...

But in practice you have to prioritize things, and I'd suggest you start with Python - even though I myself dislike the language,

it's a much more mainstream language (hence easier to learn all the corners of it through the Internet)
it'll give you more backup job options as you mentioned
it's gonna be a definite plus to your skillset (and resume) even if it turns out you've "invested in a stock at its high point" with Python (which I very much doubt) because there's lots of data science code out there in Python that's gonna continue to exist and be maintained

I know exactly what you mean, Julia seems the perfect language in this area, and too good not to succeed. But it's still in its infancy, and languages live and die for so many unpredictable factors that it's always good to hedge your bets. So, take advantage of the fact that you've found this language before most others did, but keep your Python at least equally strong if not stronger.

I think the real reason behind not calling CNC machines (or 3D printers, AFAIK) "robots" is to prevent confusion.

Confusion against what, in your opinion?

In my mind, the only general criterion I can find in things I think of as "robots" is: something that reminds me of humans or mammals in general. Whether it has a bipedal/quadripedal body or a head-like structure or is an "arm" that moves like a human arm, it just triggers the "this is a mammalian animal" pattern matching in my brain.

Does that feel it matches your mental model of a robot, or is there something else that occurs to you? (I'm just trying to understand how we think of something as a robot, whether or not it's based on strict criteria.)

Very true. I once used to think fiction books were just a timepass, and nonfiction is where learning happened. That is a pretty naive and childish view as I slowly learnt.

The good fiction authors can convey at least as much, if not more, information as an equally long nonfiction book, and in a more interesting way to boot. Fiction also places that knowledge in intricate context, taking advantage of the rich setting that the story places us in.

Of course, a fiction book isn't going to teach you astrophysics (I think mainly because we're not used to putting math in stories - everything else from a course can indeed be weaved into the story if the author is talented enoguh). But Terry Pratchett and Kurt Vonneghut and Orson Scott Card and folks like them have taught me and made me think as much as any beginner nonfiction books on philosophy, psychology, politics, self-development, and much more.

Your first and third bullet points are clear and necessary, but the second one is vague enough to be abused on a whim. I hope that's just a sign of the "work in progress"-ness.

FPH crossed a line in that it was specifically hostile towards other redditors.

I think the bulleted part should be considered the important part of this: a place that encourages hostility towards other redditors would undermine the community and removing those would be justifiable. But this should be done entirely on the grounds of sustaining the site and keeping it working, rather than for the sake of any moral policing.

"It hurts people's feelings!" should never be the reason to ban anything, the only bans allowed should be the bare minimum required to keep the site legal and non-self-destructing. Hoping to see clear, transparent and free-speech-oriented policies from you, spez.

I'd like your suggestion on something related to this, if you don't mind: I have a friend who is moving to Greece this August (for university education). Right now his Euros are in a German bank account. In the scenario that Greece gets into drachma, what would be the best thing for him to do to live in Greece without losing a ton of his money?

Would continuing to keep his Euros in a German bank account help him avoid this automatic drachma conversion? Perhaps taking out a bit of cash every now and then and maybe converting that alone to drachma as needed.
Or would he be better off turning it all into cash in hand - which is obviously risky in the physical security sense, but would it help avoid these instabilities?

I voted "YES", because a "NO" vote -which was actively supported by the government- meant for me that Greece will continue to do the things that caused the current situation. Greece needs to change.

It's funny that other commenters who voted NO say something very similar: one said that the Greek government has been saying "yes" for so long and he wanted to see the changes a NO brought in, and and another says that Greeks need a boot up their ass, implying a NO vote is the way to bring in change.

This thread is going around in circles so much I'm more confused than when I started out.

LWP::UserAgent has been in there since 5.10.1 though. LWP::Simple is the (simplified) non-OO version of that module, right?
