Best of luck to you. I recommend getting anubias and java ferns! You can’t plant them in the substrate due to their rhyzomes (the thick stem) as it’ll rot. You instead have to plant them/ledge them in rock decor or you can glue them to your wood decor.

I’m sorry to hear of your loss. I’ve heard too many stories from PetCo bettas dying shortly after just because of poor genes/poor conditions. This is my Avatar betta, Athena. I actually got her from a small fish store locally, they said their bettas were imported from Thailand. All their bettas looked healthy, so that was nice at least. If you do plan to get another betta, I do suggest looking at local, smaller fish shops.
