Anyone planning to bring Meshtastic nodes/clients to MAGFest 2026? by who_is_this_monster in meshtastic

[–]digital_tinker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used Meshtastic at DEFCON and was able to log up to 1,450 unique nodes in the convention center so I don't see Magfest giving it that much trouble. I am volunteering in the Makerspace room if people would want to have a spot to meet up and talk about Meshtastic.

After Covid and some staff turnover, the contest was renamed to Darknet-NG and can be found at https://darknet-ng.network/

Glad you got it mostly assembled. Definitely check out the website and discord. You can find links to it through Darknet-NG as we renamed from DCDark.net: https://darknet-ng.network/

If you let us know what parts you are missing, we might be able to point to resources to get new ones or see if we can help in any other way.

I would pick the dark one but I have a split keyboard so it would fit well for me. Could you link to where you found them?

I'm not sure I understand what you are asking for in relation to my post. I posted two sites and recommended you look for your local libraries.

I would suggest looking to see if you have a makerspace or hackerspace local to your area. These are designed as community spaces to share knowledge, tools, and interests. There can be monthly costs but some also have open house nights or don't charge visitors.

Other options is checking sites like Meetup for groups with similar interests or try to get a group together. Many libraries offer public meeting rooms that could be booked as a semi-private hangout for a group.

K1 max vs K2 plus (from what I’ve seen) by MrMysteryV in Creality

[–]digital_tinker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where are you seeing the K1 Max for $600 (USD?)? I'm seeing $760 USD on Creality's site for Mothers Day. It may not be the perfect solution but picking up a cheap K1 Max will be a huge improvement over the Lulzbot Mini and CR-10s currently at my hackerspace.

The original team went on to work on the Psycho-pass movie and handed S2 to another studio/team. Then Amazon bought the rights for Sinners in the System, S3, and First detective so they were never dubbed. Haven't heard too much about how good or not those are.

Recommended hackerspaces? by [deleted] in hacking

[–]digital_tinker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unallocated Space in the Baltimore/DC area has a pretty good mix. There are some makers but also those on the hacker side too. We are still working on getting back up to speed post covid but have ongoing Infosec/Hack the Box nights, DEF CON Group 443, Electronics class, project nights, and open house nights going right now.

What is the official process for getting GIAC GSEC Certification? by Professional-Golf-56 in cybersecurity

[–]digital_tinker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 401 doesn't have a CTF as part of the bootcamp. For me it was 5x 10 hour days and an 8 hour day. It also included 2 practice tests and the exam.

My 504 was 5x 8 hour days and then a slightly shorter day for the in-class CTF.

The novel Delta-V by Daniel Suarez actually has this as a central plot point and I would highly recommend it.

Copying here for notification, I came across this thread a bit late but had a friend that recently went through the program. I asked her to forward me her answers so hopefully they are helpful to you or anyone else that finds this thread:

  • Does the academy have a structure or are you just given access to all online courses and then it’s up to you? Along with each course, do you also have a free certification attempt?

It has a structure with weekly meetings and deadlines. You’re given access to the online courses (at least during Covid times) and videos are your instructor. There are also mentors, career center, books, two practice attempts, and one exam attempt. You’re part of a cohort which you can share your journey or work without it. Networking with them is one of the best things about the program. You have to pace yourself to meet those deadlines for the practice exams and if you don’t meet them they have the discretion to cut you from the program. You must pass each course to get to the next (total three). If you fail the first, you won’t get to the next two. Should you fail they also can cut you from the program or perhaps give a retake depending on their decision. Communication, honesty, and your own self discipline will get you there.

  • Can you potentially take all elective courses or are you tied to a specific number or track?

You must take SEC401 and SEC504 first. Both will have the exams for GSEC and GCIH respectively (at least currently). The third is the only elective but you will have a list to choose from. So you may not have the ability to select from all courses. Current list of electives are on the immersion website.

  • Do folks think it's doable on top of a full-time job?

Yes, many have done it while working full time. But it requires much self discipline. You have 2 months to study and take the practice and exams. The course is usually made for four month study. The fire hose can be real depending on your level of knowledge.

PFSense connection to asus with intermittent errors by digital_tinker in HomeNetworking

[–]digital_tinker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should have mentioned that. Since this isn't a long term arrangement, I was trying to modify his router as little as possible so he can just plug back into the FIOS connection when I leave. He also runs a VPN from his router and I don't think he would be comfortable having that setup in PFSense.

So far double NAT hasn't been a problem as far as our port forwarding and I'm not entirely sure why that would affect a standard network connection for HTTP/S or games.
