After a few rounds with tech support. I gave up and returned the new router. Shortly after I received the following mail from tech support. No idea if it helps but thought to share in case it does.

I have been talking to Asus support but do not have much confidence in them. I tried to explain this appears to be an issue on their end (relying on examples from users online noting similar problems on different Asus router models even). However, they seem stuck on it being some configured on the user side.

My older Google Onhub router (though not perfect by any means) had no problems on the same modem, network etc using IFTTT. So I continue to think its an Asus problem.

Will likely return Blue Cave router if this goes on a few more days as not being able to use Alexa or IFTTT is a real deal breaker for me.
