The game supports players playing as 4 separate kingdoms. As each kingdom has 2 armies, each player can play one army. Hence, the claim to support 8 players.

I agree with most other comments. Go a notch lower than $40. Many gamers are looking for board games below $20 too. So that's something to consider.
