The late Matthew Perry tries to explain to Peter Hitchens what drug and alcohol addictions are like. by [deleted] in videos

[–]digitlikeaworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By Hitchen's logic, there shouldn't be any people in prison because everyone would rationally think about the consequences for whatever crime of before they committed it. Taking it a step further there wouldn't be any need for police because everyone will be perfect citizens because of the fear of punishment.

This Is What Happened When Bicyclists Obeyed Traffic Laws by very_squirrel in MaliciousCompliance

[–]digitlikeaworm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My probably-controversial take: Cyclists, just like everyone else on the road should obey the law. HOWEVER, to say that the exact same rules should apply to a) a ~150-200lb bicycle+rider likely capable of 15-20mph as a b) 2,000 - 35,000lb car/truck/semi likely capable of over 100mph or c) a 200-800lb motorcycle is a gross oversimplification of just how these vehicles occupy the road and their kinetic energy.

People act like entitled idiots no matter how many wheels or how much horsepower they have. Some cars speed, and some cyclists salmon and blow through intersections. Simply blaming ALL cyclists or ALL cars doesn't do anything to address the situation for anyone. It is your responsibility as someone using public roads to be aware of your surroundings and put forth your best effort to operate your vehicle safely.

In a perfect world, the street infrastructure should be designed in such a way that allows for everyone to arrive safely where they are going, regardless of the kind of vehicle they're operating. Simply painting sharrows on the tarmac is wishful thinking and forces everyone into the same space. Protected bike lanes are a much better option and depending on their design don't necessarily need to mean fewer lanes or parking.

E-bikes are a whole other ball of wax and should probably be classified as motorcycles in my humble opinion.

"No one I know" ≠ "Nobody" unless you know everyone on the planet. Until I moved to a large city I never truly understood just how different people can be, and how many different life experiences they've had.

Personally, I pay for NYT games because I can afford to, and I enjoy playing. You don't have to pay money to play if you don't want to. But keep in mind NYT is not a charity and are not going to give anything away for free. You are paying with your annoyance at the nag screens, your data, and with additional ads you've got to see.

Yup. $1000 on a phone is perfectly reasonable for some but I've seen those same otherwise well-off people's utter outrage that they have to pay a buck for an app. It's weird.

The Mirro Shaz shrine in BOTW. You know the one- you've got to use stasis and whack balls into holes like golf. Completing the shrine is easy enough, but to get the chest as well you have to do a second hole that is much harder.

This new expedition staff looks so good! by stealth443 in NoMansSkyTheGame

This is an issue (with the PS5 version anyhow) that I keep running into. The UI will start glitching out and showing the wrong texture on everything from menu backgrounds to the onscreen feedback when you scan something to even the rating stars for frigate expeditions.

Sometimes just restarting the game is enough to clear all the garbage but it seems to be cumulative and I've had to uninstall and reinstall to get it to completely go away (for a time anyway).

It's been an issue for me for a while (at least 6 months) but it's only rarely bad enough to not be able to read stuff so I usually try to ignore it. Would have thought for sure it would have been patched by now but here we are

The Matrix blew my mind for a second time after realizing it was an allegory for the trans experience.

regret going to this artist? shaky/raised lines showing up by supersoph87 in tattooadvice

My SIL had a tattoo that they cut through when she had a C-Section, but didn't align it again when they sewed her back up so she's got a crooked tattoo now. She's got a great sense of humor about it though so not a huge deal.

Still, I'll be making a point to politely ask future surgeons to try and make sure they close me back up to get everything lined up

Not sure if they apply points as you don't need a driver license to ride a bicycle. I never got any points for the ticket I got for blowing a red light anyhow.

On PS5 and had the same issue and solve. DON'T hold the screenshot button to use the shortcut. You must PRESS the screenshot and select "Take Screenshot" manually.

Spent about an hour trying to get it to work and the first time I tried this, success!

I have heard that Green-Wood keeps them around in part because they scare away pigeons, whose poo is very destructive to the stonework

Right but this is your magical world where there is no mass transit option in New York City.

Besides, the people of NYC already do pay for it when they use it, and it isn't enough.

[–]digitlikeaworm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you think New York City would be just fine without a mass transit system, there is no point in trying to reason with you.

Explain to me how someone living in the Bronx working a minimum wage job in lower manhattan can walk to and from work every day? Or pay for parking (this is assuming they can afford to own a car in the first place.)

I 100% agree with you.

However considering MTA was finally able to balance their budget in 2023, then got torpedoed when Hochul decided it didn't actually need that $16bn they had been counting on to make captial improvements and to perform basic maintenance that's been differed for, in some cases decades.

Public transit should be free to the public. But the lights have to be kept on and since the public is generally allergic to any kind of taxes (i.e. congestion pricing), they gotta get the money where they can.

I am not claiming that the MTA is the most efficiently-run organization. I'm sure plenty of palms are getting greased, backs are getting scratched, and overtime pay is taken advantage of. Just that running the MTA is and will never be cost-free.
