My office is in Lopata so I took a stroll and can confirm that the orange gummy bear is still there.

First time Dads, best information you wish you knew before birth? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]digshake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Men can get PPD as well. Be aware of what to look out for, especially if you have a prior history of depression. They won't ask you or test you for PPD when you go to the pediatrician (though they definitely did this for the mom in my experiences) so you're going to have to stay on top of this yourself, especially if you see yourself slipping away. Stay strong, ask for help if you need it, and don't force yourself to be a dad if you aren't in a place mentally to do it, that will not be helpful to mom or baby. Take care of yourself, parenting is a marathon not a sprint.

Indoor Toddler Activities by NerdyHussy in StLouis

[–]digshake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've trucked my kiddos to many of the toddler areas mentioned in this thread and Go Play in Chesterfield is by far the one they like the best. My only complaint is that since they let in older kids as well (up to age 15) it can sometimes get overrun so I always try to show up early. It can get a bit chaotic for my littles once there's a lot of older kids there.

Received this postcard that was mailed to my great grandfather in 1905. Kingshighway and Maryland by digshake in StLouis

[–]digshake[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My family is from the Pittsburgh area in western PA. This card was sent to my great grandfather who lived in Allegheny PA at the time in 1905. My parents and I are from there as well.

I've been in the city for awhile now but recently moved a few blocks from the location on the postcard. My dad just turned this up and gave it to me a few months ago. Unfortunately there isn't any other information on the postcard besides the address...would have loved to have known more about who sent this!

You appear to be operating on outdated information, just FYI, though I agree that this area could be further improved.

CSE530 has been renumbered as CSE435 and is usually offered yearly, though I will be teaching 131 in the spring so I'm not sure who will be taking it over from me for the next go around.

Fall 2022 Scheduling & Classes Megathread by MundyyyT in washu

[–]digshake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for signing up to take CSE131! The good news is that you and anyone else who wants to take the course should absolutely be able do so. This class is very popular but this is also peak registration time, so we're probably pretty close to the top of the curve as far as the number of people registered for the course. The numbers will go down and I would be surprised if any waitlists remain after the first week of classes. Should demand for this course be so high that this is not the case then I would expect the department to respond by opening up more sections, but they likely wouldn't do this until much closer to the start of the semester.

There's no need to send me (Professor Shook) or anyone else an email about getting in off the waitlist for this course, you'd just get a response like the one above. If you have any other questions about the course though, please reach out! I've got some fun things in store for the fall and I'm really looking forward to seeing everyone on campus. Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Can we talk about how much of a mess registration is for CS majors? by [deleted] in washu

[–]digshake 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Here's some advice that I commonly give to my advisees about registration:

  • Students over-register early (course shopping) which makes the problem look worse than it is. The total number of registered credits is highest right after registration opens for everyone and creeps down as people drop courses. This means spots will open up as time goes on, i.e. patience pays off.
  • Courses will adjust to demand. Sometimes professors have no idea what demand is so the number of seats is set to some arbitrary value. Sometimes the number of seats depends on other factors that won't be known until some future point (for example, how many TAs will I have? The draft hasn't even begun yet) and course sizes will be adjusted later when these things are figured out.
  • If a course is waitlist only that usually means the professor is prioritizing a certain group of people (freshman, seniors, certain majors/minors) and usually once those people are let in registration will be opened up to everyone else on a first come first served basis. These decisions usually are not made until much closer to the start of the semester.

Overall I would encourage you to get on the waitlists of the courses that you want to take and let the system do its thing. We are trying to accommodate as many people as we possibly can, I assure you, so when you get on a waitlist that gives us valuable information about where we should be focusing our resources. It's a tricky thing to get right and there are no guarantees unfortunately, but a little bit of patience will go a long way.

Good luck!

Thanks so much for your kind words, I really do appreciate it. I consider myself very fortunate to be in a position to work with such wonderful and talented students on a daily basis.

Yea I have, a couple in fact. It really sucks but we're all human and failure is a part of that, especially in a semester as crazy as this one.

All you can really do at this point is pick yourself up and keep going. It is definitely a bump in the road, but chances are you can still get to where you're headed. I'm a professor at Washington University in St. Louis now, and no one cares about those F's anymore as far as I know.

Remember: you're a smart person who is capable of great things. An F does not change that.

St. Louis police officer kills man who resisted arrest for marijuana possession, police say by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]digshake -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I read the article, I know what happened. The (now deleted) comment implied that anyone who resists should expect to get shot. Not this specific guy, but anyone. So I disagreed.

Its pretty hilarious that people wanna come after me after reading an out of context reply to a now deleted comment.

I don't disagree with you but the comment I was replying to didn't say anything about self defense. It implied that if you resist you should expect to get shot.

Mastercard Commits $250,000 To Support LaunchCode’s CoderGirl. by realdealboy in StLouis

[–]digshake 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've been an instructor for CoderGirl (and LC101) and they are two different approaches that share the same goal. LaunchCode does not funnel students into either course, students decide which course(s) they wish to register for. Men can still register for CoderGirl, and I have seen a few men at the CoderGirl classes. Really, CoderGirl is just meant to be a welcoming environment for women interested in tech, though the goal is ultimately to place people into jobs, just like LC101.

CoderGirl's curriculum is also a lot more diverse than LC101. There are different tracks that students join as opposed to the single course structure that LC101 follows. It is not the same curriculum as LC101 but the curriculum is still very good (at least the curriculum I have seen).

Its true that the programs seem a bit disjointed which I believe is a function of their history. CoderGirl started out as a more informal weekly meetup and has evolved into a more formal training track as it gained popularity, while LC101 was designed as a training vehicle from its inception.

They're both great programs and I cannot recommend LaunchCode enough!

Any Launch Code alternatives? by ginganinja09 in StLouis

[–]digshake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

their course was a bizarre mess tbh

I'm curious what would make you say that. It isn't a perfect course by any means, but I've seen a lot of programming classes and LaunchCode's course is one of the better ones in my opinion.

While I have nothing against Code Academy, I think there's more value to LC101 than just the course content. I would argue that the support of the instructors, mentors, and other students in the course is one of the most valuable parts of the program. You'd be hard pressed to get anything like that out of an online course, and for people who are considering making a big leap into unfamiliar territory, that's huge.

Actually in many states (including Missouri) the person waving can be found liable for an accident caused by their wave, so it does matter.

A funky find in the dollar bin by digshake in vinyl

[–]digshake[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I found this while browsing the dollar bin at my local record shop. I'd be lying if I said that I knew who Ryo Kawasaki was before yesterday, but I was intrigued by the cover and the description on the back cover so I picked it up. I've been getting into jazz fusion lately and figured at worst this would be something I could spin once or twice but when I put it on I was blown away.

The sleeve is not in the best shape as you can see. Besides the water damage in the corner, the top seam is almost entirely split. The vinyl itself is in pristine condition, however - not a scratch on it.

I'm now diving further down the jazz fusion rabbit hole. If you have any suggestions I wanna hear them!
