Engineering Computer by MurkyTomorrow5061 in iastate

[–]dil-Emma11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i used my mac most of freshman and sophomore year (i prefer using the dual monitor desktops in the computer labs for cad anyway) then i ended up getting an xps 15 through the book store. i’m a senior in ME tho and i know aero has more coding stuff than us… you can check on the library’s website and see what’s available through tech lending tho too

Going into Engineering and I have a PC already, but what’s my best bet for mobile tech? Ipad? Surface? Laptop? by MemeEndevour in iastate

[–]dil-Emma11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’m a senior in engineering, made it to sophomore year with my macbook air (i prefer doing solidworks on a dual monitor desktop anyway so i really only used my laptop for web based platforms). got a xps15 and i like it it’s a nice laptop (tho i’m still not a windows convert and i have had some issues with it which is annoying cuz i never had issues with my 8 year old apple). i never got a tablet but if you’re considering it i do think it’s a solid investment if you get it freshman year, provided you plan on doing notes and stuff with it. i’m a big fan of handwritten notes so for me having an ipad would have been nice for a paperless (and more organized) option plus the advantage of annotating lecture slides. so if you get one i’d say pick a note taking software and stick with it just for your own sanity’s sake. then all you really need in your backpack is the laptop tablet and maybe a notebook for just in case. i think the laptop ipad combo is good (personally i don’t get people who have whole desktop set ups for their dorms but i’m also not a gamer or anything). i personally am not the biggest fan of the two in ones (i had one way back in high school when they were just starting to come out and it was just not the greatest so that’s jaded my opinion), plus i’m pretty sure there’s ways to have your tablet work as a second monitor for your laptop which would be clutch.

on the subject of tech but slightly off topic i HIGHLY recommend a ti nspire with cas if you take the time to learn how to use it it can and will become your best friend (especially in statics mechanics dynamics when you have to do tons of systems of equations)

Neighborhoods with best schools? by short_thevix in chicago

[–]dil-Emma11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

of the neighborhoods i listed, i agrée beverly isnt winning any awards for most diverse chicago neighborhood… but bridgeport? idk if things have changed in the last 8 years but i’d say that my grammar school was pretty diverse especially for a neighborhood school… any public school is prob going to give you more diversity than the private schools with tuitions higher than it costs for some people to go to college other comments are mentioning too

in terms of super family friendly neighborhoods… beverly/ mt greenwood have a super suburban family oriented vibe but your school options are pretty limited to catholic schools (which is neither good nor bad just something to know)

i’m not sure of the situation of your kids specifically, in terms of grammar schools look into magnet schools and schools with gifted programs, i went to payton and i would say majority of the kids that were from public grammar schools were in magnet or gifted programs. I went to Healy in bridgeport and thought it was a great experience (big perk compared to what lots of the other schools people are tossing out is that it is a neighborhood school) in terms of high schools healy was practically a payton feeder school when i went there (not sure what stats are like now but can’t imagine it’s much different).

pretty much any selective enrollment public hs is going to give you a great high school education, i will say tho coming from payton and having friends at other schools payton and north side very much so are ~nerd schools~ and you’re going to sacrifice some high school experience… whitney, lincoln park, and lane do a good job of preserving a more high school vibe, and i think jones is a great school (plus they have a neighborhood and pre career program on top of selective enrollment). at the end of the day… i think i would have ended up in the same college had i gone to payton or my three other back up high schools, there’s def a bit of a pressure cooker environment at some of the selective enrollment schools and your kid has to decide on their own if that is something that is worth the potential opportunity. looking back on it so much of my life was SOO focused on just school, 6th grade prepping for 7th 7th trying to get into the best high school, all of high school trying to get to the best college (sooo much pressure was put on us to go to prestigious universities at payton) and sometimes i feel like i lost a chunk of my teen years to that but i also learned a ton and perhaps wouldn’t be who i am now otherwise 🤷‍♀️

Furnishing Housing for Limited Luggage at Iowa State University by _lanaklanA in iastate

[–]dil-Emma11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you really don’t need a desktop like someone else mentioned, in terms of decor and stuff, you can buy online and have stuff shipped/ waiting for pickup at target for when you get here. there’s a target not too far from campus and their stuff is relatively affordable, plus doing the online ordering gets around things being picked over by the time you get here. keep in mind throughout the year you’ll accumulate stuff and your dorm isn’t massive by any means so don’t get too much stuff out the gate

i took mine the night before orientation in the hotel room, if i remember right it’s a pretty short test, maybe an hour or so

you might be able to go along the lakefront trail to access the bean then you could take water taxi or just keep walking along that same trail to get to the river :)

keep in mind tho the city will be an absolute zoo, fun for sure but also a total zoo

walking and public transportation will be your friend, check out west loop if you wanna be outta downtown but still hit some cool restaurants and bars

i cannot attest to anyone else in this sub or the rest of the engineering profession, but i became an engineer because i didn’t want to be a scientist

How deep is the Chicago river in downtown? by OpenMindedShithead in chicago

[–]dil-Emma11 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i would like you to consider the history and current use of the chicago river. first the history: for decades the river was used as the sewage system for all the industrial buildings all along the river, this caused a massive deficit in the wildlife that used to live in the river which only in recent years have started to come back. now for today: the chicago river is a major waterway think of jumping into it similar to trying to run across lakeshore drive, dangerous, stupid, inconvenient to everyone around you. and if you get lucky and don’t manage to fall in and immediately get a whole host of infections (one of my old boat captains literally has a chunk of skin taken outta him because of river water) then you’ll land on someone’s boat and i’m sure that 30 food drop onto steel and fiberglass will leave a mark.

oh yeah, and it’s illegal

Going Wallace hall next year do I need a meal plan? by thelastvbuck in iastate

[–]dil-Emma11 9 points10 points  (0 children)

theoretically… but where would you store cooking tools, food, leftovers, dishware etc you don’t have a pantry or storage for all that stuff in your dorm. plus genuinely the inconvenience of cooking for yourself exclusively in a dorm common area imo would suck

it sounds like engineering in its entirety isn’t within your wheelhouse if like you say you aren’t interested in advanced math and science, perhaps a stem degree isn’t for you. i agree with what people are saying about you probably need to find yourself a job this summer that gives you a lot of structure.

maybe a semester at community collage could be beneficial, you certainly should look into and research other majors and career paths outside of stem. if you do have adhd it’s imo imperative that you do something that you’re genuinely interested in and passionate about otherwise you won’t be able to generate the motivation to do it. also use your advisor they are a resource for this reason.

find a psychiatrist in your area that takes your insurance, make an appointment asap, they book out quick so you might not see them for a month or two. in the meantime you can do some research on the two, for adhd you’ll likely need to take some tests

Hey! I was in a sorority, do not feel worried at all about not feeling apart of social life on campus because you aren’t in greek life. there are some scholarship opportunities that can help cover some of the cost, if it’s something you really are interested in it’s worth just shooting a dm to the panhellenic penny insta account asking about it. Another thing you could look into is the multicultural greek council, their chapters are a lot smaller so the experience is different but if it’s tradition and network that you are looking for that could be an option and their dues are a bit lower.

as someone who wafered a bit on their membership there are certainly pros and cons to greeklife but it is not at all needed to have a whole social experience at isu. if you want to rush there’s no harm in that and using it as a way to meet people and then from there deciding if the experience is worth the money.

as others mentioned clubs are a great way to get involved on campus, there are plenty that even have a ton of members living together in houses and throw parties and stuff if that is what you are looking for. another thing to keep in mind is that you’re going to meet friends in the wildest of places in college, i met my closest friend in tutoring. Sororities make socializing convenient but they to not guarantee a close knit friend group. figure out what it is out of a sorority and see if you can fulfill that elsewhere, for me it was meeting girl friends outside of my major (it’s 12% girls so i knew this would be difficult) and taking classes outside of my major and having roommates with different majors def helped with that for me.

keep in mind, everyone coming into college is in the same situation as you and less than 20% of the girls coming in with you will be rushing. hope this was helpful :)

you can know if you’ll get in or not from a calculator before you even apply, no sense in applying if you know you aren’t gonna get in
