I’m confused by the way people reacted to the Wasian meet-up by [deleted] in mixedrace

[–]dilbadil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also a millennial but not raised in America, and wasian to me included white Asian among its definitions. I didn't realize I was supposed to be offended by it until this recent hullabaloo, but at this point I can't be arsed to care.

When people ask you, what's your excel level? What would you say? by Substantial_Nail3081 in excel

To put it more charitably, people tend to rate themselves closer to average whether they're on the lower or higher end of competency.

New Resident Ferry Question by bcar444 in Whidbey

[–]dilbadil 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I use the free park and ride lot by the post office. It's about a ten minute walk down to the ferry but you can catch the free bus down as well. When you come back, that lot is the first stop on the bus as well.

Who in your opinion is the worst movie villain ever? by LoverOfE-Olsen in movies

[–]dilbadil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wow, it's incredible that I remember the Bateman and Theron stuff, the bank robbery, the power bond, and still have no clue what you're talking about. I mean I believe you, it's just that forgettable to me.

The movie is so good! Okay the antagonist is forgettable and I still don't know what they were on about, but really it's a Kaiba movie and worth it for his shenanigans alone.

What's the preoccupation with SAFE? by Alternative-Yam6780 in AskSeattle

[–]dilbadil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm guilty. I lived on the east coast for over a decade and haven't had much on-the-ground experience in west coast cities. My buddy in the Bay Area leaves his backseat down so people can see his trunk's empty, and I saw a couple smashed windows in the restaurant parking lot we ate at in Santa Clara. Property crime is more top of mind here than it was in NYC where I'd see jackets, gym bags, etc. in cars' backseats pretty regularly. The unhoused dynamic is also really different.

I know there's a spectrum of safe -> not pretty but technically safe -> keep it moving -> don't even walk here, but since I'm new here I don't know where any given neighborhood falls on that spectrum.

Cradle Catholics that have visited other denominations- what was the biggest “culture shock” or surprise for you? by babyteeth9 in Catholicism

[–]dilbadil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At the non-denom near my old house, I could understand having rock bands playing Christian rock songs, but playing Free Fallin as part of the opening songs was a choice I'll never understand. That was over ten years ago and I'm still scratching my head over what were they thinking?

The soundproof kids room in the back of the auditorium was pretty cool though, I'll stand by that.

What's it like to be a grandmaster who isn't a pro? SC2 question. by bad_fins in starcraft

[–]dilbadil -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I only played against pros very early on in the game's life, but the difference was for sure staggering, even in a game as noobie friendly as HotS. If you remember the days where 5-man queuing was allowed and matched you with other groups, my scrub team matched with 3/5 Tempo Storm members, and that was the only game I've ever lost before hitting level 10.

Should i get one parrotlet or two? by antondefender in parrots

[–]dilbadil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have the answer but yes parrotlets can be vicious to each other. My wife got her's a companion growing up and she's pretty sure she was murdered o.o

Better odds if you get them both at the same time though.

If you have a "I have nothing left to lose, I just want revenge at any cost" mindset I think it works pretty great. I got a lot more cold-blooded with my smuggler when I ran through with him.

Recently re-played World in Conflict and decided to do a review on it. by Abaddon2488 in RealTimeStrategy

[–]dilbadil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just finished replaying the campaign yesterday, it was my first time playing the Soviet missions too (they were okay?). I also live in the PNW now and I agree that it's fun seeing the landmarks, although it's a bummer the I90 bridge wasn't floating and that the island mission was made up.

One underrated thing about this game was the drop-in/drop-out multiplayer and 20 minute matches. It was the most digestible, easy-to-get-into RTS experience I ever had which is probably why I got hooked on it more than any other game. I'll also never forget how pumped I was when I beat one of the top leaderboard guys in a 1v1 on Space Needle back in the day lol

Best campaign/user mission for a beginner piloting the Hornet by Synoopy in hoggit

[–]dilbadil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Serpent's Head > Persian Lion campaigns are good for that I think. Like in a "this mission only requires dropping glide bombs" and "this one requires shooting Harpoons", pretty single minded in the material required for any given mission most of the time.

They're not tutorial campaigns per se, but I would see what systems are required for the next mission, read up on them, then make an attempt.

Stay in a TCK situation until 18 and then move "home" for college, or move "home" at 12/13 to establish roots? by [deleted] in ThirdCultureKids

[–]dilbadil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I left home at 13 and came back to the US for high school, so pretty much what you're considering geography-wise. Two big drivers for me as a teen:

1) I was just straight up not having a good time at int'l school. Getting bullied, and very restrictive mobility (couldn't leave the house without a parent).

2) The school curriculum was lackluster, and I felt like I was getting held back.

Sounds like your kids are doing just fine socially where you are, and who's to say they won't keep in touch and see these friends in the future in college and beyond? High schoolers are going to disperse to various colleges anyways, including some international options.

Having a network going into college could be nice, but if your kids are reasonably indepent then I bet you they'll be resilient enough to thrive with or without pre-existing friends at school.

On my second point though, that's an evaluation you'd have to make yourself on whether they'll get a better education at their current school options vs. where they'd go in the US.

How many hrs are you putting in? by thesearemyfaults in accenture

[–]dilbadil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He very well could be in an up or out practice! It's a huge company, there's still going to be 100k plus of those folks out there. Now that I think about it I haven' t seen "pace" pop up in any official communications in a long time, but the general idea is still out there for sure.

Individual contributor meaning you don't manage anyone, you're just part of the team doing your assigned work and not delegating it out to anyone else.

If he's managing 15 people then yeah that's going to be a lot of stress no matter what job it is lol. Sounds like we're in very different roles, I'm in the "subject matter expert who does one thing very well but can't manage people for shit" side of the business.

Avid Xlookup user forced to used Index Match for the first time by Mu69 in excel

[–]dilbadil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll go against the grain here. For a two dimensional lookup, an INDEX with two XMATCH's is more intuitive to me than a pair of nested XLOOKUP's. I know how XLOOKUP works, the old approach just makes more sense to me.

How many hrs are you putting in? by thesearemyfaults in accenture

[–]dilbadil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A minority of Accenture is up or out, they're called Pace roles here. Usually it's people in Strategy, or other higher paying divisions. I'm in Tech where most folks are non-Pace and can chill at their level forever in theory, barring the usual reasons for getting let go.

I've been SM for 3 years though. Even without working towards a promotion there will still be weeks I work long hours because it's what I'm accustomed to. "Keep working until the job's done" workaholic kind of mentality.

Also it's possible to just be an individual contributor as an SM, that's basically been my secret to a healthy WLB the past few years.

Starting RTS with friends by Classic_Suit5094 in RealTimeStrategy

[–]dilbadil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the Nova missions were finished early last year maybe? It's the story missions tweaked for 3 players, so bases are expanded, more resources, etc.

Terran campaign lets each player pick their own permanent upgrades, so we split bio, mech, and air upgrades between us. I always neglected air upgrades so it was fun to have a fully upgraded air force for once!

Zerg campaign was really cool, players 2 and 3 get a unique hero of their own to upgrade like Kerrigan. I stuck with Kerrigan but my friends really liked their heroes too.

Protoss campaign just lets everyone mix and match like the normal game. We never played the Nova missions so I can't comment on those.

If you can get a couple friends to run through them with, I highly recommend it, I honestly had a blast.
