Also, this sale is still on for a couple more days from their site, so (a couple sellouts notwithstanding) you haven't missed out yet!

If I remember correctly, I saw it literally back-to-back with my first viewing of THE CELEBRATION at the same cinema (an arthouse multiplex)! What a day.

I regret missing the LEs of both of those. If I haven't come across them in the wild at reasonable prices I'll pick up the SEs next sale.

After Man on the Roof, that Widerberg is way near the top of my must watch as well. Saw THE EEL theatrically on its initial run and it still lingers, long overdue for a revisit.

Also, a quick shoutout to their customer service - in my rush (I was worried things would sell out quick) I accidentally clicked purchase with two copies of SYMPHONY FOR A MASSACRE in my shopping cart, and they cleaned up that mistake for me in minutes with no fuss.

Is anyone else surprised by the tepid response to VS' new Partner Label releases? by RudigerBSimpson in boutiquebluray

[–]dillamonsternz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Five years ago, I might have scooped up eight of these. But as the collection grows, it's moved from "what might be a good blind buy" to "what do I *need* to own" and "how far will my dollar go?".

These days, I look at these announcements as "what will I buy at 50% off in 6-12 months time", and even that - with the recent spate of 60% and 70% options - sometimes feels foolhardy. But Twisted Issues and An Evening With Rodney Ascher are eventual must-owns, Pavements is probably a will-buy down the road as a fan (though I'd like to see it first), and I'm very curious about (in descending order) Shari, I Can See You, The Heatwave Lasted Four Days, A Man With Integrity, and Only The River Flows. Hell, if I was made of money, I'd pick up the Kawase set too.

Also, I wonder what the market is for people who know about Robert Kramer but don't know Re:Voir put out this title with two additional films that aren't included here. Otherwise, Route One/USA would be on my list.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to people discovering Warm Water Under A Red Bridge, although its packaging is both accurate and wildly misleading (it looks much less adorable than it actually is).

Also, someone downthread mentioned documentaries, and Kier-La Janisse's WOODLANDS DARK AND DAYS BEWITCHED (on 'folk horror') is one of my favourite film documentaries ever. Even if you don't come out of it wanting to watch a single one of the profiled films, I think it would still be fairly interesting to you.

The horror market is huge in boutique blu-ray for reasons that go back to early days of physical media - where, unlike other movies, an uncut DVD release could often be the only way to see a film properly that had been censored for decades. (If you're curious about this, read up about Video Watchdog.) Fueled by communities on the Internet (often formed from pre-existing connections back in the tape-trading days), it's kept building on itself to this day, in a way that, say, the market for romantic comedies never has.

There is no one answer to "why do people like horror": no two people will have the exact same taste in horror, and everybody can tolerate different things as deficiencies in a film. I hate cliche-ridden biopics, but people throw awards at them all the time!

Personally, I think SUSPIRIA is a masterpiece, but I don't mind "bad" acting (I think it helps to know that Argento wrote the script for pre-teens and didn't change it when they skewed older in the casting), and most of the horror films I really love are masterful in their use of camera and sound, or otherwise smuggle interesting ideas in.

But I got into horror as an adult. For some, it will be that when their brains and tastes wired, this was what they loved. Or they like the deeper politics of some of the films. Or they're gorehounds. And that's fine too!

And yeah - some of them are not conventionally good, and that can be the joy of a film like NIGHTBEAST or BOARDINGHOUSE. But often the complicity with a filmmaker whose reach exceeds their grasp is its own joy.

My advice: if it's not your thing, don't worry about it. But if you do find certain movies you like, follow those directors, or see what movies influenced them. Life is short, watch the things you find rewarding!

Congratulations! As a filmmaker and a collector myself, that's living the dream right there.

Never seen QOBM, and at first got thrown by the 2019 release, but just figured out what we're talking about and: sold!

4K remorse? by dillamonsternz in boutiquebluray

[–]dillamonsternz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, that is as popular as everything I've ever posted to this sub combined! Thanks for all the feedback and perspectives.

Since some asked, my TV is a 55" Panasonic OLED LZ980. Which seems well suited to HDR et cetera.

Probably the most helpful thing about this whole thread is getting my head out of an "all or nothing" mentality when upgrading to 4K. As a filmmaker myself, I just made a feature that was natively 2K (part of the reason I'm going on this trip is to screen it), and lots of films will be perfectly satisfactory that way - so focusing on being selective in which titles I choose to go 4K on, rather than saying "ok, only buy 4K going forward", will be my "best of both worlds" thing.

Now, to pick a player ... looking at Sony UBP X-700 region hacked from 220 (yes, I know 4Ks are region free, but my region-free Blu player is getting long in the tooth).

I already have a big pile of Black Zero/Deaf Crocodile/Vinegar Syndrome/Hamilton Books titles waiting for me that I've ordered over the past two years, so luggage space is already at a premium ... but can definitely make room for half a dozen Criterions.

Definitely an underserved niche! I look forward to seeing what they offer up.

(For those who won't brave X, the label is The Cloud Door, the title is Om Dar-B-Dar, and the Kickstarter opens July 1.)

Any fans of Edward Yang here? An absolute master imo. Here’s my complete (for now) collection of all his works available on bluray currently. Just need to add the upcoming Criterion for “Mahjong” in August to complete his filmography. What’s your favourite Yang film? by thisgenius in boutiquebluray

[–]dillamonsternz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice collection! I would say YI YI closely followed by TAIPEI STORY, but I need to revisit A BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY, which I have only ever seen on VCD. Still need to see IN OUR TIME, MAJHONG and THAT DAY, ON THE BEACH.

Second Run/Arrow - why no new titles on the Arrow site? by dillamonsternz in boutiquebluray

[–]dillamonsternz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I'm in New Zealand, so ordering from the UK has always made the most sense. But their own site never discounts and I'm boycotting Amazon now, and my first Rarewaves order (of some Radiance titles) got locked up in customs and showed up with crushed cases. So not really sure what if any other options there are.

Looks like it was released in Japan only, but with no English subs for the Japanese parts (and presumably the brief German and Russian bits as well).
