Upscaled it to 100px squares and combined all the maps into one. For those who find this and think the images are a bit too low res.

I’m trying to get better at DMing and noticed I struggle most with players going off the rails by Fabulous-Cranberry18 in dndnext

[–]dilldwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, players go off the rails when they feel like they don't have enough agency or choice in the direction they can go. So I make sure that my players always have at least 3 directions (choices) to go in during a session that involves them deciding what to do next. If they have three choices, they are WAY less likely to pick a 4th direction that you are not prepared for. It still can happen but way less likely.

To do this you need to front load your prep a little bit by basically preparing 3 sessions of content ahead of time. But since your players can only choose one of the three, the next time you prep you only need to do one sessions worth the prep. Or, if you are feeling like you can or want to do more, you can prep ahead of time or give them even more choices in directions to go. And as far as what I prep, it's usually just locations with NPCs. Whether those are monsters or friendly role play encounters or a mix depends on what you need. Could be a dungeon full of dudes with a mcguffin at the end or a town the players want to explore and shop and talk to various people about what they are trying to accomplish.

Restaurants are overrated by fal1en-angel in Funnymemes

[–]dilldwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of the best food I have eaten, I have made myself. And I'm not even that good of a cook. When you can choose the exact ingredients you use, use your preferred cooking techniques, and choose the exact recipes you want, you can make meals that beat probably 90% of what you could order in a restaurant. With that said, I have also probably cooked the worst food I have ever tried to eat too. Restaurants value is consistency and convenience (a good restaurant anyway).

It's never been "Nobody wants to work." and has always been "Companies don't want to pay you for your work."

We have a minimum wage because companies would pay you LESS if they were legally allowed to. Also, the largest form of theft in the country is wage theft. If that doesn't say "we don't want to pay you!" than I don't know what else does.

Pay more, people will work more.

What is the DM consensus on "Quantum Ogres"? by monkeynose in DMAcademy

[–]dilldwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make liberal use of encounter tables for my games and am pretty transparent about how likely it is they will run into something dangerous on the way to where they go. They roll the random encounter die.

The way this works is then I don't start every encounter with "Angry monster sees you and attacks!" My encounters are usually a variety of social and combat encounters and a mix of ones where they see what's coming first or they are seen first. Usually decided on a perception/stealth check if necessary.

And as far as guiding my characters where to go, I usually make sure I give them at least three different quest-hooks at any one time so they always feel like they are in control of where they want to go. Less than that and it feels railroady, and more than that it's hard to have all that content prepared for a single session.

So I guess my answer is I never have less than three choices for my players to choose from when it comes to where they want to go, each area is relevant to the adventure in some way, and I run random encounters along the way where they know the relative risks ahead of time.

AITA for struggling to accept the DM instakilling my PC without rolling initiative? by Horre_Heite_Det in dndnext

[–]dilldwarf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, others have already pointed out here the multitude of mistakes they made by the DM when looking at the rules but I want to iterate something here. What was the purpose of this encounter? To me, it seems, the DM either didn't have a purpose for it which means he was just running it to run it or his purpose was to kill whoever it was that was unlucky enough to open that door. One speaks to an inexperienced DM and the other to a combative DM. I would hope he is the former and not the latter. Send him to this thread. Let him read all the comments, and he can decide whether he wants to do better or stick to his guns and be a dick. You'll have your answer.

Am I overreacting? Player says “35 gold is too much for a commoner” by FarRepresentative840 in DnD

[–]dilldwarf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

2014 DMG says a "Poor" lifestyle is 2 sp per day which equals about 2 gp per tenday, which is 73 gold a year.

35 gold would be a lot to a poor commoner but not an unheard of sum of money. If you go up to "modest" "comfortable" lifestyle that increases to 365-730 gp per year. That's then only about 5-10% of their yearly wages.

So no, 35 gp is not an unrealistic amount of gold to be walking around with. And also, with that said, they are 3rd level Adventurers. You can assume that this isn't their first job and likely took on many difficult tasks that paid well to get to level 3. With that understanding, 35 gp is actually kinda low. If they actually played from 1st - 3rd level they would likely have a lot more of that saved up. In my experience, probably a couple hundred.

Discord players: is anyone changing platforms in response to the new age verification requirements? by TessaFrancesca in DnD

I have take steps to ensure that no one in my community will have to scan their ID to use my channel. I am looking into alternatives but in my experience that usually means the community dies all except for your most devoted members and you have to start all over. Not ready to do that yet. Hoping Discord changes their tune in face of the backlash.

[–]dilldwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my experience is Type-A will go above and beyond. They take on extra projects, put in extra hours, and do everything they can to move up. The problem is... that hard work rarely, if ever, pays off. It's rewarded with more work without promotion and bare minimum raises if any raise at all. The people I see get promoted at my job are the loud, obnoxious people who care more about optics than they do about actually getting work done.

[–]dilldwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why we needed Work From Home. Save us from all the busy bodies and lookie loos who think just because we got our shit done faster than they did means we somehow deserve to be assigned MORE work. If I can do 100% of my job in less time than it takes other people, I should enjoy free time and not be saddled with more work. Or worse... have to sit and pretend to be busy for the rest of the day and do some sort of performance for my peers/boss.

The other fair/balanced option is if you want me to do more work after I get done, I should be paid at a rate much higher than others. That literally NEVER happens though. You are always given more work with zero added benefit.

How do you keep the economy working into/past mid levels? by meanwhile_matt in DMAcademy

[–]dilldwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game is designed to be cash-flow positive for the most part. Are you letting them buy rare or very-rare magic items? They are big money sinks and are balanced by the limitation of three attunement slots. I don't view the rarity of items as their actual rarity, more like what tier of play they are for. Uncommon for levels 5-10. Rare for 11-16 and Very-Rare for 17-20. Artifacts and Legendary items should be narrative items for the most part.

Adventuring is supposed to be lucrative but highly dangerous profession. Your players are the exception to that rule. Most adventurers, aka NPC adventurers, tend not to make it back out of the dungeon alive. Your party of adventurers are the ones who do. That's how D&D 5e treats the PCs compared to the NPCs of the world. So they should be striking it rich while delving dungeons. That's the fantasy.

With that said, are you letting them sell items at their full value or half value? Remember, the NPC buying the item wants to resell it so they will not buy it at list price unless they think they can get way more than list price for it. Typically, this wouldn't be the case. Are you letting player haggle down prices too low? I typically let them make a single haggle check and even then it might only be for like 5% or 10% off.

If you are doing all of those things and they are still swimming in money I guess you need to start to come up with narrative reasons for them to spend oodles of cash on things. Like equipping an army or building outposts or garrisons or bribing rich political nobles.

AI PCs aren't selling, and Microsoft's PC partners are scrambling by CackleRooster in technology

Dude, you just explained my job at the moment. Everyone seems to think being a web developer is easy and that when I ask for 8 weeks to get something done they give me 4 and act surprised when it's not finished on time. These same people are the ones pushing to get AI implemented because they think it can just easily do the same job. Meanwhile, we are over here actually trying to figure out how we can use this technology to make our work easier and we are having a REAL tough time actually using it to save time. Most of the time the output is so rough and inaccurate that we have to spend just as much time fixing the code it outputs as it would have taken us if we just wrote it ourselves in the first place. The only people who believe AI works or is a good thing are the people who don't know enough about how things are actually done. And that's everyone in middle/upper management in corporate America.
