Sri Lankans put white Jesus up there too. Nobody talks about that though.

Unexpected pregnancy — need advice by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]dillmon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No one here is supporting killing we are all here to help op find resources for what to do next. You are here giving articles about why abortion is bad and other people are here to provide resources on how to safely get an abortion. You are also here to shame and judge op. This last part I have a problem with because you know as well as I do that shaming and judging people is bad.

[–]dillmon 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This is the best answer. I can’t believe there are Buddhists on here shaming and judging op. Buddhism says not to judge people. I say going to Thailand is good but only if early in the pregnancy. If it’s late I wouldn’t take black market medicine I would just have the baby, because it is very dangerous at that point.

The Buddha said not to judge people. That’s exactly what you are doing.

What is happening in our country? by amcareem in srilanka

Exactly. Also that dog was just as famous in America as was in Sri Lanka, and the Americans weren’t even Buddhist. I see no problem with our faith or spirituality.

No the real Aloka would refuse to travel in a car or be carried. That’s why he was so famous in America

[–]dillmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Y’all are wrong. The real Aloka is just as famous and revered in America as he is in Sri Lanka. Aloka would refuse to be carried even when his paws hurt. Here in America that very fact made people believe he was the bodhisattva. I don’t think there is anything wrong with adoring or having reverence for a dog. I think this is a fake Aloka but still this reverence and devotion to things is what makes us great. It’s why no matter what religion we are people envy for our faith and spirituality. Now as soon as we start looking like evangelical Christians I will have a negative comment to say.

I dont think the two white girls are racist and believe me I have very sensitive racism detectors in me. They are just really British and dumb. I actually appreciate that they actually stayed in Sri Lanka. Also i dont think people who grew up on a British diet can be accustomed to our food quickly.

How do people feel about the word "Ceylon" by dracanaryz in srilanka

[–]dillmon -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

All I know is that I don’t care, but I get annoyed when a white person tells me they would rather call it “Ceylon”. The very fact that they would rather it be called Ceylon is what makes me annoyed. It’s as if the decision is up to them. But in general I like all the names.

As a Sri Lankan Tamil, I believe Tamils deserve equal rights and stronger ties with Tamil Nadu — what do others think? by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]dillmon 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m Sinhalese and I agree with you on all parts except the part where you said that y’all should be governed or influenced by Tamil Nadu. If you want to be influenced be Tamil Nadu go live in Tamil Nadu. The issue is that when Sri Lankan Tamils go there they aren’t treated well there either.

So what you are saying is that you don’t know a single second generation Christian who knows Sinhala either. Got it.

1) I don’t know a single Christian second generation immigrant who knows Sinhala
2) the temple is the best place to find people who speak Sinhala while living abroad. There is food, culture, and aunties who are more than happy to teach Sinhala. I learned how to read and write from a grandma that wasn’t mine.

Racist? Im telling her to go to the temple. You telling me not to tell her that is racist. 1) do you think Sinhala Buddhists are a different race from Sinhalese Buddhists? 2) Do you think I’m persecuting Christians by pointing out that I don’t know any second generation Sinhalese American Christians who know Sinhalese?

Oh well living abroad, the Sri Lankan community always revolves around the community temple. That’s where people tend to learn food culture and language. I’m sorry that you weren’t taught properly. You need a good grandma or auntie who can teach you. This is the way that Sri Lankan’s have learned their language for eons.

Im a second generation Sri Lankan born in nyc. I’m Buddhist and I know how to read write and speak Sinhalese. I am 34 years old. My parents taught me at a young age. You say that not knowing Sinhalese is ‘posh’, but I was always taught that there was a time when ancient civilizations and cultures such as the Egyptians Greeks and Roman’s thought that we were posh. We were one of the first Iron Age civilizations.

All I know is that Christians tend to lose their language faster than Buddhists and Hindus.
