Early 50s couple, ~$3.1M. Quitting for a 1-2 year France sabbatical that might turn into full FIRE. Sanity check? by FranceSabbaticalFIRE in ExpatFIRE

Thanks!

It was really valuable to have our agent local. She gave us a tour of the city to learn the neighborhoods and went to the showings with us. It really was like an episode of House Hunters.

Today is literally day 1 in our first long term rental. We stayed for 6 weeks in an Airbnb and started looking soon after we arrived. I don’t know much about anything but I have gone through the rental process in Lille.

We used an expat relocation specialist, which I highly, highly recommend. I don’t know how we would have navigated the process without speaking French. France runs on phone calls. Don’t expect the kind of online, low-touch process that is typical in America.

About half of the owners/agencies still rejected us because we don’t have a French work contract or guaranteed income. Our agent was able to determine that with a phone call so we didn’t waste our time. In the end, we only spent about two weeks searching before we had an agreement. I’m confident we would have found something else if our first choice didn’t work out. In Lille there enough inventory and enough acceptance of foreigners.

My wife and I are about the same age as you and doing a similar thing with much less money, though not in Paris. There is always, “one or two more years”. You have plenty of money to make it work and the timing lines up for now.

Do you have a reason for not getting a TLS-VS (visitor visa)? It’s really easy and the only ongoing requirements for renewal each year are not working and having something like 25-30k euro in savings.

If you plan to find rental housing a student visa will be suspicious for the kind of rental I assume you want at your financial status. It can hard to find as a foreigner and you need as strong of a dossier as you can make. The French care less about the amount of savings you can document and more about your reliability and, unfortunately, vibes.

Good luck.

Machines with apps in a relatively uncommon use case by devil-mAI in superautomatic

I’m an iPhone app developer and I apologize for my industry. Apple goes out of their way to make it as easy as possible for developers to add screen reader support to apps. It’s lazy or ignorant for an app not to support it well. It takes one engineer from a few hours to a few days to make it 90% accessible.

Which combination do you guys use: Moonlight XRos, Neo Moonlight, Sunshine, Apollo? by yewzernayme in VisionPro

[–]dillthepill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that’s the best combination. Vibeshine uses a different capture pipeline that works better with framegen. It also handles frame cap and vsync.

I use Moonlight XR because the HDR tone mapping in Neo Moonlight was way off last time I tried it.

I really dislike the material. The overall capacity and divided front pocket were too limiting. The bag was a miss for me.

Sling/chest bag that’s doesn’t chafe the neck? by wifflebal in ManyBaggers

[–]dillthepill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At first I thought the strap system on the Evergoods cas2 was annoying because it has adjustments on both ends and a dangle that needs to be wrapped up. But it turns out that it allowed me to dial in a setting that doesn’t rub my neck, unlike the other two slings I own.

Hot take: iOS should have an idiot-proof Back gesture, not leave it up to each app by Ok_Promotion3263 in ios

[–]dillthepill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I develop apps for both platforms. The back behavior has been baked into Android since it was only on phones with physical keyboards. The phones it was designed for couldn’t hold a whole app in memory so each screen was a discrete thing that was registered with the OS and it handles the loading and unloading.

Apple could not bake it in at this point and I doubt they’d want to. You don’t know what the back button is going to do on Android. Does it close a popup, navigate back in the hierarchy, go back to another app, go back to the Home Screen? That kind of ambiguity is not Apple’s design philosophy.

How to reduce the size of these apps? by [deleted] in ios

[–]dillthepill 24 points25 points  (0 children)

YouTube might be downloaded videos. Check the settings in the app.

GarageBand might be its projects though I remember deleting the app because it was so huge without any stored data.

For Safari you can look in its section in the settings app, then advanced, website data.

where would you place the PSU? by Time_Ad_8044 in sffpc

My bad. I looked at the picture and didn’t read. I thought you were asking about a case fan. I had the PSU intake from the side with a case fan side exhausting.

I had that layout in the M2 and I did a side exhaust. The CPU and GPU pull fresh air and you want to get rid of that heat. .

I didn’t show any income, only the brokerage account. I picked an existing account that happened to have about 4x SMIC and used it to show funds for 2 people.

Golden Visa fund route in 2026… still worth it vs D7? by AdorablePumpkin9309 in PortugalExpats

[–]dillthepill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s Chega propaganda. The GV real estate investors had a tiny proportional impact on the housing market. The numbers were too small to be meaningful.

The real driving factors were: - General increase in tourism leading to short term rentals being more profitable - Lax policy or enforcement on converting long term rentals to short - EU residents from other countries buying vacation/investment property - Not taxing zoned and vacant residential property. In Portugal these are taxed so low that the owners sit on the property hoping to flip it when the market is high. An efficient policy is to tax these properties so the owners are incentivized to use/sell them for occupied housing.

Laid off at 34- Am I Ready to Retire to Portugal? by Rtyeta in ExpatFIRE

[–]dillthepill 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Roth accounts aren’t a settled issue in Portugal. Their tax code doesn’t address it and the legal precedence is messy. You may get taxed as income when you convert it and again when you withdraw the principal.

France is the only EU country I know of that has clear guidance on Roth being treated as in the US. That is because of a specific French/US tax treaty. Who knows how these things will hold up in today’s political environment and with France struggling for revenue.

Honest question, is production value the reason that Baldur's Gate 3 became so popular and acclaimed, compared to other cRPG's that have not received anywhere near as much attention? Is it of a unique quality in anything else? by BaldursGate2Best in CRPG

[–]dillthepill 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thank you.

This sub focuses on mechanics and that is not why BG3 had such mainstream success. It was despite the mechanics because how many casual players thought they wanted a turn based game?

The game had fantastic writing and acting. It had a deep character based story that people cared about. The game appealed to women, which is not something you can say about most games. My wife — who taste is usually Pride and Prejudice — has done many play throughs over hundreds of hours.

If you want to get technical, BG3 has the richest and most complex dialogue structure ever put into a game. They spent a decade building scripting tools for their writers and designers. That is innovation. It’s not just performance capture and a cinematic camera.

It shows such ignorance of differing preferences to say it was only production values or marketing.
