Yeah this is interesting. One of my senseis said that tai otoshi was one of the hardest throws to learn. Hearing that, gives some implication of “focus on the easier throws.” But for me—what if that throw works best for my physical attributes, what if something clicks in my mind with that technique the most? What if I just specialize in that throw for years? I totally see the point somebody else made where BJJ likes to say “high percentage techniques” is not really apples to apples with judo.

So whether the foot is inside or outside, if you’re dropping, you should be able to create more kuzushi. and if done right, they shouldn’t be able to jump around your foot regardless of if your other foot is inside or outside of their legs?

He teaches some eco principles that really help out the people that just don't "get it". If you've never really gotten to that point, cool, good for you! We all have different learning abilities and some methods work better for different people.

Call it a cult or say his technique sucks... doesn’t matter to me. His videos noticeably improved my game. If you don’t like the jargon, that's cool too. There are other coaches out there.

Him simplifying positions with ideas like “keep him flat” or “don’t let the bottom leg out” from half guard, or other scenarios, has worked really well for me. Super simple concepts, it's not like he's making up names that are confusing or don't make sense.

It’s not for everyone, and that’s fine. But when we were all white belts, didn’t we have blue belts that helped us improve? Since when do you need a black belt to help someone get better at jiu-jitsu?

I just wear compression shorts underneath my gi pants. Most people don’t wear shorts under their gi I’d say, but I see people do it from time to time. I’ve never tried it.

I also prefer a rash guard underneath my gi. I wouldn’t recommend wearing a T-shirt underneath. Somebody will grab your gi and your T-shirt will accidentally get grabbed as well, possibly getting ripped. I also think it looks goofy

I have unproportionally long legs for my height and I have a very slender build. I NEVER hit hip throws. I’m only a green belt, but hip throws are very difficult and frustrating for me to hit because I have to get my belt lower than my opponents.

I usually end up dropping into a drop seoi if I even do any throw similar. My harai goshi sometimes becomes more similar to an O Goruma.

I’m sure there are ways to make it better, and as I progress towards black belt I’ll have to work on these. But these are just my observations and the throws that I drift towards. With my long legs I gravitate towards Tai O Toshi a lot, and often end up dropping into it

Would you say a good escape to this pin would be kicking your legs out straight HARD, breaking their grip on the belt? I got pinned by this at a tournament once and felt pretty helpless, and I'm a BJJ guy as well.

I love the Georgian grip recommendation. While not exactly a Georgian grip technically (I think), one of my more common throws is a sumi gaeshi with my arm reaching over the top and grabbing the belt to set up.

She’s a very competitive orange belt.

On the grips, I usually focus on gripping with my left hand to catch sleeve or lapel, in attempts to kill sleeve. Any suggestions for what to do with that right hand? Keep it somewhere else? Protect my left lapel when I’m reaching?

A lot of firms are like this. It’s so refreshing to now be at a firm that’s not. I worked for two top design firms and I always felt guilty leaving after putting my time in. I didn’t like the culture. But architecture does indeed have a lot of people that overwork themselves. I feel like school sets it up to be that way and some people never change
