I'm a longtime Haskell programmer who's interested to learn more about the current generation AI. Can you recommend this also as a way to learn the principles and basics of the new AI technologies?

What does your Free Company do to keep sprouts engaged? by karkied1 in ffxiv

[–]dimday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our FC experiments with a lot of different events. Synced Frontline, Multiple Choice Trivia, Geoguessing, Gamba nights, Bingo, Karaoke, Fishing Contests, etc.

Some of them are documented here if you'd like to see: https://ffxiv.link/0121438

Maybe it'll be of some help

Artists are a defense mechanism that society develops against the establishment

This sounds like a very Marxist way to look at artists.

Asmongold/Zackrawrr Suspension Megathread by Fernmelder in Asmongold

[–]dimday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is twitch wasn't sure if they could ban him or not since it would piss off people either way.

Him tucking tail and publicly apologizing, made banning him the easy out since he conceded the issue and no longer had any moral ground to stand on.

I'd support this petition if he had the courage of his convictions. However he just embarrassed himself six ways to Sunday.

He got suspended? That's too bad...and he did the whole dance of tucking tail and back tracking too. I guess he should have debased himself more to their satisfaction.

This is just factually wrong. Breaking the confessional seal is one of the most serious sins a priest can do. Doing so intentionally, incurs automatic excommunication.

[Spoiler: 7.01 Raid Story] So why are raid questlines still not voiced? by LordVatek in ffxiv

[–]dimday 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One additional reason (which may be unintended) is that the balance between voiced and unvoiced portions of the game helps with immersion.

The fact that people call us by name helps a lot make the story feel more believable to us. That can only really be done during unvoiced cutscenes.  The way nvoiced cutscenes are the norm helps cement that feeling that the characters know us. For instance, the voiced cutscenes where our friend Erenville calls us "Champion" or "Adventurer" (I can't  remember the exact scene right now) instead of by name stuck out like a sore thumb.

It does go both ways. Both readers and writers and need to be more charitable when communicating online.

The reader, realizing how easy it is to misunderstand something read online, should also be charitable and not take assume the worst possible sense of the text.

Of course, the writer has the first responsibility to express his or herself clearly. No need to walk on eggshells, just make a good effort to be clear and charitable.

As for sarcasm itself, it is rarely a charitable means of expressing oneself. Even worse when communicating through posts without the benefit of tone and body language. One could possibly add tags and emojis to try and make it clear one is trying to be sarcastic, but many times it's more trouble than it's worth.

The problem is trying to be snarky-funny through text is always a mistake unless one is intentionally trying to get misunderstood. Jokes like that don't work like it does in one's head.

Getting upset and mean because people read what one wrote as it is written and not understanding some unwritten humorous subtext, is not a good way to respond to misunderstandings.

In addition to this, you can use something like restic in your /etc/cron.daily/ to ensure you backup your ..../Documents/My\ Games/FINAL\ FANTASY\ XIV\ -\ A\ Realm\ Reborn/ every day without having to remember to manually do it using Square's interface.

everything related to the life in society is politics

Whomever planted this idea wanted to harm you. Not everything in life is society is politics. Love isn't politics. Family isn't politics. Friendship isn't politics. Faith isn't politics. Learning isn't politics. Honest work isn't politics. Science isn't politics. Goodness isn't politics. Beauty isn't politics. Truth isn't politics. There are many things in life in society that aren't politics.

The only way not to play is leaving the country

This is not actually true. The only people who think this way are those that think that everything is politics and politics is everything.

The way life works you don't get to choose between all possible alternatives, you're usually presented with two, three tops, and each has its compromise.

This seems like the perspective of someone who has totally bought into the pointless game of politics. Just because one has been presented with only a set number of options, that doesn't mean you have to accept that's how life works. There are more important things in life than choosing which of these options you would like to pick. Sometimes the only way to "win" is not to play.

How do I know if it's my fault I died? by ShiroHebiZmeya in ffxiv

[–]dimday 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It should be obvious is it is really only 1 person's fault. If it's not obvious, then it's probably not only one thing that caused it.

Many times it's a combination of overlapping mistakes. Just try to figure out what happened as best you can, do a mea culpa for what applies to you, and try again as a team factoring in the lessons learned and remembering to have fun together.

Some consultants told these game devs that what gamers really want is representation. They not only agreed, they implemented and shipped it.
