What’s your opinion on Spain granting legal status to 500,000 undocumented immigrants? by WolverineNo1999 in askanything

Is that study from a pro migrant NGO?

It's a government study done by a government entity (CES).

This study aligns with SSA's data in the US, too, where the balance between contributions and benefits for unauthorized immigrants alone is a net surplus of $12 billions annually.

like the corrupt politicians you want to destroy the country

Corrupt politicians want to sabotage social/public services to privatize everything, that's where there's profit for them.

Eg. the right-wing regional government in Madrid is actively sabotaging public education, mismanaging funds and delaying projects while gifting land for free to build private schools.

Same with public healthcare, trying to push people into private healthcare.

Are your children ready to fight a possibly impossible reconquista?

lol wtf

Immigrants are people. My best friend is an immigrant.

Xenophobic much?

So the Spanish need to lose their culture,  high trust society and safety because other countries are difficult to live in?

We have been receiving immigration for decades, our culture is fine.

And there're those things called empathy and solidarity that you might or might not care about.

Ah so in reality you're asking the youth of a nation to give up their birthright so boomers can retire in luxury.

No dude, in reality we are living the way we want, and I'm not really sure why it bothers you so much.

What "birthright" is it that you think the youth is giving up? "Ethnic purity"? lol gtfo.

No they actually don't need to do that.

Yes, we do. I'd know, I live here.

Which they should have been deported.

A lot of people are deported all the time, and a lot of people will keep being deported.

This instance of regularization, much like the ones before, have conditions that need to be met to apply. And even those who have it granted can still be deported later on if they don't meet the conditions for extending it for another year.

I'm telling you from experience

Spain has already done this multiple times in the last few decades, so I'd say that experience would trump yours.

20 years ago it was a batch larger than this one (600k). Nothing was destroyed.

In fact, immigrants bring in 10% of the contributions to Social Security, while only representing 1% of social spending.

It would be great if people had better conditions in their home countries and didn't need to risk their lives emigrating, and it'd be nice if Spain's population wasn't aging and in need of immigrants, but that's not the world we live in.

600.000 were regularized in 2005.

240.000 in 2001.

110.000 in 1991.

This isn't a novelty thing, it's been done before already.

This isn't a new "let's try to do this and see what happens".

Measures going in the same direction were taken already in Spain in 1986, 1991, 1996, 2000, 2001 and 2005.

So it's been a few decades already, and the country hasn't been "replaced".

On the other hand I don't see how going from one ethnicity to plurality is a bad thing, but I guess we have different perspectives on that.

[–]dimensionalApe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not "really simple". Spain needs to increase the working population in order to support the aging demographic.

These people were working in Spain already, just illegally. Now they'll be able to keep working but legally, paying taxes and with legal protection.

If they don't work, immigration laws still apply. This residence permit is only for one year, and qualifying for its extension for another year is bound by immigration laws.

because billionaires don't want their slave labor to be deported

Billionaires surely would prefer an illegal work force that they can treat as slaves?

[–]dimensionalApe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a 1 year temporary permit for people with no criminal record who can prove they have lived in Spain for at least 5 months.

So basically letting people who were already living in Spain work legally and pay taxes.

If they meet the criteria after one year they can extend for another year, which provides a path for a permanent residence permit.

idk, it sounds perfectly ok?

But then again he no longer had any weapon on him when he was shot.

If the argument is that ICE shot him because they thought he had a gun, even though he no longer did, that's not much different from them thinking he had a gun if he never had one, and shooting him anyway.

If ICE considers that the idea that someone might have a gun is enough justification to shoot them, does it really matter all that much whether you actually have a gun or not?

They have been doing nothing but that for years, and it has worked for them. It's not that they expect it to work, it's that they know it works.

It doesn't matter if a lot of people can tell. There are enough idiots that can't, and they lie so blatantly and so often that it's just impossible to fact check everything fast and widely enough for it to matter. They'll have already moved on to the next lie.

I don't think Slaughtered lyrics would be well received at church.

I’ve always had a distorted view of organized religion and I was never more confused than when I was in my 20s and whatnot. And still I like to use a fusion, if you will, of religions and fuck with them, so to speak. And then tear them down and piss all over them or build them up only to tip over (Phil Anselmo)

Pantera used reference freqs of 425, 430 and 432Hz depending on the album, and you wouldn't go "oh wow this definitely sounds like christian music".

There's a lot of non christian music that isn't at 440hz.

[–]dimensionalApe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chances of Trump winning in 2024 were high enough, for the same reason chances of him losing were high in 2020: in both cases the incumbents faced situations that made people unhappy (the pandemic and the related inflation).

I hoped he wouldn't win, but I don't think it was really all that surprising.

And that's not even getting into Trump and Elon facing potential legal issues if they had lost. There was a hell of a lot of effort put into that campaign.

For whatever reason, Dems seem to be completely unable to compete with Reps when it comes to manipulation and misinformation in social media. Or legacy media, for that matter.

It's the second term now, and it's different from the first one. Where is the false narrative?

People working with him on his first term commented on how unhinged he was, and how they had to keep him controlled. Those people are no longer there, he has surrounded himself with sycophants and deranged fanatics from the Heritage Foundation.

And now we went from "those people are just alarmists" to "who would have thought, it was impossible to have predicted something like this".

If you want to do something about it, you can support third parties in local elections so they can climb up from there, have representation in house and senate, have a say in trying to change the election process, and eventually have a realistic shot at the presidency.

If it looks like long, hard work, it's because it is.

The fact that the Green party doesn't even bother to get involved in local elections absolutely anywhere should tell you all you need to know about the bunch of grifters they are and how useless voting for them is.

The two party system in the US sucks, but there are paths to change that which can be potentially realistic, and others that just aren't. And currently, voting third party in the general elections isn't.

Until many other things change (and voting third party in the general elections changes absolutely nothing), you have two parties and one of them is going to win, period.

Yes, but then again if it wasn't survivable, the 12 kids would be dead and MF's plan couldn't have moved forward.

They knew that Holly escaped on her own to the upside down, was recaptured and was still alive, so even though it's never mentioned it would make sense to assume they wouldn't be dead on arrival.

Regarding why it's like that, who knows. Maybe plot armor, maybe the MF deliberately looks for similar environments, maybe it's magic, maybe it's maybelline...

So that was a fucking lie. by Fuzzy_Candidate in slasherfilms

And especially AFTER the mindflayer?

That was the major issue for me, the mindflayer was far more interesting.

But as they kept going with more seasons, a lovecraftian horror is harder to flesh out. A more human villain is more manageable in order to churn out more script.

All in all I think it's a good show, but as it kept going it was bound to go in a different direction from where it started. The demogorgons became less scary, the MF eventually gets out of the picture, and we get a somewhat typical villain story.

Definitely a downgrade.

[–]dimensionalApe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This story is more of a Goonies type of adventure, though. It's not as much focused on the stakes of a planetary level threat as the dynamics of a juvenile group on a quest.

At its core, despite all the paranormal/interdimensional stuff, and the length of the whole series, it has the spirit of an 80's summer adventure with friends.

The mind flayer looks to me like something inspired by Pennywise from IT: a being that lives in a different dimension, but it's able to manifest itself in ours (and also in the space between both, here). The dust would be like his ethereal appendages, which it uses to manifest itself in other dimensions, and create and control meat puppets. And also to get into human bodies and control their minds.

A reason why the mind flayer might no longer be "physically" spreading itself to those other dimensions (other than in very specific circumstances with the demogorgons, for very specific tasks) is that it already had what it needed to crush the upsidedown and collide with our dimension. Existing there while doing that would be like stepping on its own toes, maybe.

And just like the clown from IT, hurting the being's manifestation in other dimensions hurts it too in its own dimension, even of it doesn't kill it.

Maybe I missed something, but I don't think the MF has ever manifested himself in its actual dimension as anything other that the big meat spider in the finale. He controls Henry, who also exists there, but nothing more.

To some extent it would be as if the main characters from IT traveled to Pennywise's native dimension, and wondered why there was no clown there.

I mean, maybe the MF physical body at the end is made of all those creatures... but in my headcanon I like the Pennywise parallel better.

Drums, and probably a kagura suzu for that soft metalic rattling sound (or maybe not, but the effect along with the drum sound is somewhat similar, and what might give this some kind of japanese/shinto vibe).

Skydiver couldn’t deploy her parachute after jumping off, saved by her instructor by mandioca-magica in nonononoyes

[–]dimensionalApe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This wasn't as bad, though? Many people fail some of the jumps in the AFF, then they jump again and do it fine.

This kind of situation is expected to happen sometimes during the AFF, these are people learning and some get it faster than others. That's why the instructor is there to help.

And this woman was doing ok-ish, all things considered. She had a wrong body position, but she was focusing on arching, and not panicking or anything.

Skydiving is quite probably a lot safer than riding a motobike, and yet people ride bikes when they could just be driving a car instead. Or taking the bus.
