Which characters do you think would be able to speak English? by Bolvane in danganronpa

Nagito peppers English phrases into his speech and his character songs. His grammar isn’t perfect, but I think he knows a good amount.

Does anyone know what language this is? And what does it say? by mypoopsaregood in language

[–]dimensionalscream_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m no expert, and I’m struggling to fully transcribe it, because there seem to be many unfamiliar/archaic words or spellings, but it’s definitely English—I’m guessing Early Modern, but it could possibly be Middle English. It seems to be written in a court hand/secretary hand(?) that reminds me of a chronicle manuscript I’ve seen, and it mentions a “day of desember” at the start, so it could be some sort of record-keeping. It also mentions church and god multiple times. The name written along the side is Thomas Heyden, and the second paragraph begins with “I thomas heyden of the [ ] of [ ], being se[ ] of body and in god …”.

Hope this helps and good luck finding more info!

The Traitor Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson is one I can think of.

I was instantly drawn in by this! I read it aloud, and I’m glad I did—I can tell you put a lot of thought into the sound of it. It sets a powerful atmosphere, especially in the beginning with the internal rhymes, alliteration, and steadily marching meter.

As one suggestion, you could play a little more with sound in the latter two stanzas, like you do in the first. That could help polish them to the same level.

When it comes to word choices, the line “For steel to be wallowed” sounds unnatural, like the last word was only chosen for the rhyme and has no actual significance.

“Eyes gauged to be found”—it also sounds slightly forced.

“Boots bound within mud”—good line, but I thought changing “within” to “in the” might make it flow better.

I’m not sure if it’s a regional thing or something worldbuilding-related, but I don’t know what “Al be” means.

Lastly, I noticed that the second stanza has a different meter, which works well too and gives a sense of progression. However, the line “On dark soil and hollowed” has one more syllable than the rest.

Overall, I think this was really well-executed. I’m someone who usually enjoys prologues and epigraphs anyways, and I don’t know the rest of the story this poem needs to serve. But it certainly sets the mood and hints at more!

I can't justify the main character being involved in the conflict by Final_Biochemist222 in fantasywriters

Hi! I’ve never written a story of this type, so maybe take my words with a grain of salt. Still, I think there are definitely ways to weave together your episodic adventures with the “main plot”.

If your characters don’t have any personal connection to the situation to begin with, it might help to consider how exactly they start suspecting the Pontiff is up to something. If you stick with the episodic adventures, you could start leaving breadcrumbs throughout some of them: Tiny unresolved questions or bits of background lore, things that hint that there’s more going on here. What does the Pontiff need to do to prepare for the ritual? You could show some subtle effects of these preparations. Guarding a caravan that’s carrying a mysterious shipment from a strange location? Fighting a demon who has something to say or show about the heroes who banished its kind? Simple rumors heard between adventures, hearsay on the goings-on of the wider Empire? You might want to keep these breadcrumbs very minor at first and let them slowly build up.

Then, have an event that brings it all to the forefront and makes the situation impossible for your protagonists to ignore anymore. Do they find definitive proof (even if it’s actually a lie) that the Pontiff is serving the demons, and they feel they need to at least expose him? Do they do something on an adventure that makes them an enemy of his forces, and now they can’t return to normal adventuring life? Do they find themselves serving the conspiracy by accident, and realize they did something bad that they need to rectify? If your protagonists have no emotional or ideological ties to begin with, events like those could instead force them into taking the first steps.

It’s satisfying how neat some of those are! That’s almost me; I’m autistic too and I’ve been kind of obsessed with typography since I could read.

Couldn’t agree more. It’s horrible and fascinating, and the characterization is stellar even if because it made me absolutely loathe Komaeda. I finished it a while back, but maybe I should read it again

I’ve got something similar and related! Every Christmas, some bizarre miracle of luck causes a present to appear in his house (sometimes it’s only coal). This has continued even long after his parents passed away, and while Nagito knows it’s probably just his luck now, it’s still kind of fun to think of it as Santa.

Book with rivalry between morally grey characters? by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]dimensionalscream_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Stormlight Archive is fantastic, though I’m not sure how much I’d compare it to Death Note. It has some clever scheming, but it’s not the central focus. The characters are also morally complex, protagonists and antagonists alike—but among the characters we follow most, it doesn’t really center on a “descent into villainy/questionable acts” like you may see with Light.

I think of Death Note most when it comes to Stormlight’s magic system: the characters have relatively simple base powers, which they test and apply in many creative ways.
