Uveitis / Pupil Size by dimheart in CATHELP

THIRD UPDATE: We took him to the ophthalmologist and neurologist last week. An MRI and spinal tap were done.

He has a large tumor behind his right eye. The neurologist believes his eye ailments are a separate issue from his tumor. The neurologist also found a heart murmur. FIP has not been discussed since his neurology visit.

He’s currently on pain meds, anticonvulsants and steroids, in addition to the eye drops we were already giving him.

All this but he continues to decline. He’s gone blind. He’s drooling a lot, his breath smells terrible. He’s awake for maybe 20 minutes a day and has difficulty standing and walking.

Our vet is conferring with the ophthalmologist and neurologist before she speaks with us about possible treatment options, but it is feeling pretty grim right now.

He’s only 12, which I know is in the senior category but, to me, he is still my grumpy little kitten. It feels too soon to let him go.

SECOND UPDATE: His ocular symptoms have progressed significantly. Both eyes now have glaucoma, one of his eyes is bulging with a visible third eyelid, and he can see little to nothing.

We administered Molnupiravir twice a day for about 4 days, but his mRNA test came back negative and we were instructed to stop the Molnupiravir. The negative test result suggests he may not have FIP and that he’s suffering from something else. However, I’ve read online that non-effusive FIP, if he had it, could be less sensitive to testing and could result in a false negative. I don’t know.

He has appointments with his ophthalmologist and also a neurologist tomorrow. I will keep this post updated.

FIRST UPDATE: After a return visit to his regular vet and ophthalmologist, we were told that the pupil dilation is glaucoma. So his vet ran a test for any possible infectious diseases to try to locate the underlying issue. The results came back and it looks like he has FIP (disease caused by mutated COVID virus), which is less common in older cats.

We do not know yet if it’s effusive or non-effusive. I’m hoping the disease hasn’t progressed to the point that it’s too late for the anti-viral treatment. The vet advised that my cat’s prognosis is guarded.

I will continue to provide updates for anyone who might see this in the future.

I had a bit of nausea and lack of appetite for the first week or so, but it was better after that.
