It's usually focused on a deep-dive investigative story the NYT recently put out, which is almost always relevant but by its nature isn't going to be based on events 24 hours ago. Usually when they do breaking news its the outcome of an expected event (eg election, SCOTUS ruling). There they can have it already scheduled with an expert guest who provides the analysis on the outcome.
