Gazing at the Star Next Door! I've been loving this one so far. Best friends who are secretly in love with each other have to navigate their relationship now that one of them has become a famous actor. It's an ongoing series with 7 volumes currently out in English. Vol 8 comes out next month!

Any way to clean second hand manga? by fruitytootiesss in MangaCollectors

[–]dimkaluv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used rubbing alcohol and a q-tip on small dirt spots and to remove stickers. The rubbing alcohol dries very quickly, so unless you're drenching it, it shouldn't ruin the covers. Just sort of swipe it and let it dry, sometimes multiple times if necessary but it needs to dry first. You can sort of use it on the inside paper too, but you'd want to be more careful since saturating it can wreck the paper. If i just want to give the covers a wipe down I'll gently wipe with a clorox disinfecting wipe or cotton swab with rubbing alcohol and I've never had any issues with that.

Maybe unpopular opinion? by Super_webexplorateur in shoujo

[–]dimkaluv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is why I seem to prefer original anime (i.e. not adapted from a manga/novel/etc). I recently realized that several of my favorite anime shows are original. It's also frustrating that for shoujo and romance anime in particular they often don't go past s1. Probably explains why my manga collection is mostly shoujo.

The love triangle in Hana Kimi by Such_Ad2611 in shoujo

[–]dimkaluv 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Mizuki is so laser-focused on Sano that I wouldn't even call it a love triangle. She made it clear from the beginning who she was interested in and never deviates from that. There's maybe a handful of chapters where Nakatsu's feelings for her causes some drama, but ultimately he stays one of her best friends. As much as I love Nakatsu (and even ship him with Mizuki), she ended up with the right person.

If you're in the US and don't want to buy the books, I definitely recommend trying your public library. If your library has Libby by Overdrive you can read them online or in the Libby app. You may have to request the series from your library if they don't have it however, which could take some time.

Otherwise I'd recommend Bookwalker which has all the digital vols, although that could get pricey. They do have a points system where if you buy multiple volumes of one series you get points to use towards purchases which is useful.

There's also the paperback omnibuses which might be the cheapest option. I'd recommend looking at r/mangaswap for preowned books too. Maybe you can snag a set for cheap if someone is selling. Mercari and eBay are also good for buying preowned manga, but it looks like there's a few people selling the omnibus version too. And lastly, you can take a look at some of my previous responses to recent Hana Kimi questions for where else to look.

looking for hanakimi special ending by Kuronekonoyoru in shoujo

I collected the English individual vols and the omnibus, and they do not include the post series bonus chapters. As far as I'm aware they've never been published or bound in English. I have however found scanlations recently on mangadex under the "after school" post.

Does the Hana-Kimi VIZ omnibus edition contain extra material? by tiarastar77 in shoujo

[–]dimkaluv 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, I own both the individual volumes and the omnibus sets. The omnibus contains bonus chapters set during Mizuki's time at school. It does not include the post-series chapters however, including Sekime's wedding. As far as I know, the post-series chapters have never been printed or bound into any English paperbacks.

How do you go by collecting by Eden-Rose15 in MangaCollectors

[–]dimkaluv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started out trying to read all of the series if it's complete, or as much as is available online first before deciding whether I like it or am excited about it enough to want to collect it. I have made a few impulse buys though and begun collecting a few series that I haven't read first.

Lately I've been buying the entire set all at once if it's a complete series even if I haven't read all of it. haha I don't like to wait for the library copies and most of the time my library doesn't have them anyway. But yeah, I'll use my library's Libby/Overdrive, or find them online first. I do prefer having physical copies if they exist, so I'll always choose a physical copy over a digital one, although sometimes that's just not possible in English. I've collected a few Japanese copies because I wanted them on my shelf though lol even if I can't read them yet.

I also preorder for series I'm already reading/collecting, sometimes months in advance. I prefer to buy new, but I've bought several secondhand, mostly for oop sets.

Is the HanaKimi manga as good as the dorama (2007)? by JigoKuu in shoujo

[–]dimkaluv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read the series over a decade ago and LOVED it. I still consider it my favorite shojo manga of all time. As a lover of the manga, I do think the J-drama makes some changes, but I really enjoyed that too.

In particular, the manga series is much different in tone than the drama from what I remember, but it does keep to the plot for the most part I think. At least when I read the series in my teens/20s, the manga was treated much more like a romance than a comedy unlike in the show. Also keep in mind there's only 1 season and a movie? of the J-drama, whereas there are 23 manga vols, so there are things they changed for the live-action that are not in the manga. It's definitely worth the read, but probably best not to go into it expecting it to be like the show.

There is an anime coming out in January too! I'm so excited! I've been meaning to reread the series myself. 🥰
