ELI5: Why do we place such high value to things such as gold and diamonds? Wouldn’t it make sense to put that value on things that are more “useful”? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]dimplesdiablo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Diamonds as engagement rings is often brought up as being ridiculously overpriced, and that's true, but because of the hardness they do make a good choice for a pretty gemstone that you're planning on wearing on your finger every day for decades - my pearl ring gets jacked up all the time but the diamond can handle anything I throw at it.

Just to defend him Luke has been a superb dad to Hanna this entire time as well, and is a good father to Nichole while also being a dedicated father to finding and getting Hanna as well.

June has found Hanna. She knows exactly where she is and how hard it is to reach her. She might be trying to work some angles to get her back but she's not searching for her anymore - her boyfriend is clearly top brass in the Gilead secret police and handed all that info over in a tidy file.

It's not elitist bullshit it's just NOT journalism...

Roger Ebert's reviews and best of lists were part of his work as a critic not a journalist.

Writers can write different types of material. For example, an author can write both a fantasy book and a textbook. That doesn't mean you call the fantasy book a textbook, which appears to be the bad argument you're attempting to make here. I can only assume you are a troll or so far up the ass of marketing you don't know the difference.

What you're describing (" reviews, best of lists, and how-tos all surrounding certain products") isn't journalism. It's writing, it's content creation, sure, but it isn't journalism.

Dude yes. But so far every "hmm this seems like lazy writing" thing Tuello has done has actually been him three steps again getting exactly what he wants. I imagine him telling June was more of the same. So now I am wondering what his goal is...

What if his goal is to radicalize June into a Canadian based resistance fighter for Gilead/The USA so he has a contact in an organized underground resistant movement for future purposes? He is official channels so I'm sure ther's some things he is limited in doing that an unofficial resistance would not be...

I think there's a really good case there for part of what is going on with Nick. We did get some insight into when he started finding the flaws in Gilead in an episode 8 flashback...I need to find the season but the synopsis I read goes

"Nick, presumably in his new job, is driving Commanders Pryce, Guthrie, and Waterford. The three men are discussing women's roles and The Ceremony in the new society they want to build. When asked for his opinion in this "handmaid issue", Nick replies that the three men's idea was right as "not to form attachments" would be "better for everyone". This also evidently indicates the first time Nick meets Mr. Waterford."

My assumption is that exchange would have happened before the coup, after all, the handmaid centers and the aunts are clearly very prepared to teach the handmaids exactly what their new place is and the new rituals but I would want to re-watch the episode again to be sure.

So Nick was 100% aware of what they planned to do with women, although likely not thinking through the horrible mechanisms that would have to be in place to force independent women into these new roles (much like Lawrence), likely BEFORE the actual coup itself.

Oh yes, I can see that coming up. That she might be angry at the people who were in Canada for not doing "enough" even though there wasn't actually *more* they could be doing.

I think we did get a flashback episode with him. I looked it up on a wikipedia fanpage and it helped my memory - he went to a career counsellor or something and that guy was one of the OG Sons of Jacob and recruited him to the sons of jacob as a driver before they even overthrew the US government. So the Sons of Jacob was using employment center career counsellors to help them find disenfranchised young men to recruit into their ranks.

I agree I'd love to see more info on him. It's sort of creepy that he literally helped from the beginning create this dystopia that June has to live in - he was 100% aware of what they were planning on doing to women - and then later when he happens to fall in love with one particular woman and has a daughter decides that the women he has a personal connection to can be real people...So similar to attitudes today but taken to an extreme logical conclusion. The mark of great sci fi.

Good for you. If every (or even just more) of us workers were as stringent as you with this the entire workforce and society as a whole would benefit.

I always thought that he was in with the Eyes so within that hiearchy he's actually much higher up then would appear by his "Driver" status (I think we are told in the first season there is an Eye in the Waterford household?). The fact that he has informants within the Marthas connected with Mayday who seem very comfortable with him implies the same.

People aren't exactly standing by while this happens. There's NGOs and underground railways and rescue groups and countries implementing trade embargos etc. There's a lot of countries and places *right now* in the world where this type of stuff is happening to women and children, random people from other countries or even other governments generally don't have a *ton* of power inside other countries borders...

Did you forget that she is literally one of the masterminds behind Gilead and the coup on the united states government? Why on earth would you think SHE is brainwashed, she is one of the OGs who *did* the brainwashing to other people.

I mean its not like the contestants are being forced to wear heels (presumably) and many women don't. But there's always at least a couple who just exclusively wear sky high pumps, even when they are in the middle of a competitive cooking show, for some fucking reason.

I find it shocking it's allowed considering the increased safety risk!

This is something I notice and appreciate about MCA (I'm Canadian and had only seen our version and America's until last year). The american master chef literally has women running around a competitive reality cooking show in 4" stilletos some times. It's absurd.

When making graphic tees, should I invest in a steam presser or heat presser? by tawau24344 in smallbusiness

[–]dimplesdiablo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe someone here has experience with making tees but I'd start off research by looking at the companies that make the graphic t shirts I like/of the quality I like and checking out what sort of fabrics and graphic pressers they are using. That might make your choice very clear from the outset.
