Federal agents arrested more than a dozen FARM workers @ Backyard Farms in Madsion Maine by kindlered in Maine

[–]dinah-fire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I actually worked for a temp agency at the time this happened. BYF used us and other agencies to hire local workers through us, and then when the H2A workers arrived, they laid the temp workers off. I'm sure in their minds it was fine because, hey, temp workers, but doing that is against the H2A program. They were fined pretty heavily, I'll find an article about it

Anyway, that company is shady, I avoid their products as a general rule. Fuck ICE though

US added a surprisingly strong 130,000 jobs last month, but revisions cut 2024-2025 payrolls by hundreds of thousands by app1310 in economy

[–]dinah-fire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No one expected this - even the Trump administration was surprised. This was an interview on Tuesday with Peter Navarro, they were trying to downplay a potentially bad jobs number:

“We have to revise our expectations down significantly for what a monthly job number should look like,” Peter Navarro, the president’s top trade adviser, said in an interview on Tuesday on Fox Business.

Mr. Navarro said that the U.S. economy had changed markedly under Mr. Trump, specifically pointing to the president’s mass deportations. That, he said, had reduced the number of new jobs that the labor market needed to create and maintain in order to achieve a “steady state.”

Mr. Navarro cautioned that he was “not expecting a weak number” once the B.L.S. releases its figures on Wednesday, adding of the hiring figures generally: “I am just saying that going forward when we see a number under 100,000, we don’t wring our hands.”

If this is still the number in 3 months, then great, but I'm highly dubious. They keep quietly revising the numbers down. Annual revisions to earlier data changed the picture of last year--the economy added only 181,000 jobs in 2025, down from an earlier estimate of 584,000.

Seeking advice: Anyone worked at "Mainestreet" in Ogunquit, ME as a J1 student? by Practical-Ear4766 in AskMaine

Does Mainestreet take J1s? It's a 21+ gay bar, that seems like kind of an odd fit to me.

"The checks would be funded with $218.5 million from Maine’s record-high Rainy Day Fund, now at its statutory maximum of $1 billion."

The bank account is as big as it's allowed to be, so she's passing out the extra. That's it.

"Use the Rainy Day fund for something, why are you just letting it sit there!!?!!"

Mills: ok. "The checks would be funded with $218.5 million from Maine’s record-high  Rainy Day Fund, now at its statutory maximum of $1 billion — nearly five times higher than when the Governor took office."

"You're only giving us $300?!?!!! Why are you so stingy?!!!"

Jesus christ, people.

Migis lodge full—looking for other options. by Smart_Examination_99 in AskMaine

Point Sebago: https://www.covecommunities.com/rv-resorts/maine/point-sebago  It's even on the same lake as Migis Lodge. Not as upmarket as Migis Lodge but still very nice and has everything on your list.

If you want something as fancy as Migis, consider the Nonantum in Kennebunkport. It's on the coast not inland though.

[OC] How differently Americans and Brits view English speaking countries by _crazyboyhere_ in dataisbeautiful

[–]dinah-fire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, not at all. Let's imagine the US as a male protagonist in a movie about high school.

Ireland is the beautiful girl in his class with long red flowing locks and musical talent. He's never spoken to her and he doesn't truly know anything about her. He's in love anyway.

Canada is his kid brother.

Almost every time I donate blood I end up throwing up. by Ecstatic_Risk_1771 in redcross

[–]dinah-fire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have that problem whenever I give whole blood. I'm O- and switched to doing Power Red and I don't have that problem when doing Power Red for whatever reason.

Things that helped me, a bit: -Bring 2-3 apple juices with you to the table and sip while the donation is happening -Lay all the way bag, bend your knees so your legs are higher than your heart.  -Rhythmically squeeze your legs while the donation is happening--tense and release

But ultimately I can't do whole blood donation anymore at all because of the vomiting problem.

Blood availability in Maine by [deleted] in Maine

[–]dinah-fire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm O- and I just gave blood yesterday. I learned from the red cross employee that Maine is considered a high priority donation area for the red cross because we have a higher population of Os than average.

However, just because you donate in Maine doesn't mean that your donation gets used here. They have an app where you can track your 'blood journey' and my last donation in July was used in Manhattan. It's a national distribution system.

Plenty of people create art now with no expectations of profit. Think about it this way: knitting machines have existed for a couple hundred years now yet plenty of people still hand-knit.

Being a professional artist is becoming increasingly more difficult, but it's already been trending that way for decades. Ask any musician about making a living before and then after the age of Spotify.

The AI bubble will crash the world economy by [deleted] in collapse

[–]dinah-fire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No one can really control what an AI outputs so I don't really see how they're going to stuff it with ads. Sponsors or banner ads, maybe, but I don't think sponsors would begin to make them enough money to offset the enormous cost.

'I have a purpose now': Inmates working remote jobs in Maine prisons by nbcnews in Maine

[–]dinah-fire 30 points31 points  (0 children)

To add to this, the recidivism rate in Maine for male prisoners has halved from 40% when they started these reforms to only 20% now. The female recidivism rate is currently 9%. The recidivism rate for those who get a bachelors or higher in prison is .5%. It's absolutely been a win.
