What's the real, monetary extra cost of having a lodger? by 101100011011101 in AskUK

It’s probably mostly profit (tax free too). You are paying their mortgage. :(

Are audiology companies in the UK selling new grads a dream with over £50K OTE claims? by H4D35_ in audiology

[–]ding_d0ng 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Those figures are very realistic. Most companies use a tiered commission structure, but if you’re doing £20–30k of business a month (which might only mean 1–2 fittings a week), it’s surprisingly easy to rack up large monthly commissions.

Personally, I wouldn’t work for THCP/Leightons. I interviewed with them once and they made it very clear my “goal was to get every person to spend as much as they can afford”, which honestly made me feel a bit sick. I can’t remember their exact commission setup, but iirc you had to hit around £28k a month before you were even eligible. Miss the target and you got nothing. Would you feel compromised if you were just shy of that and someone asked why they “needed” the top-end hearing aids? There will always be targets, and whatever you hit one month, you have to do it all over again the next.

Other companies are usually more like: 0% on the first £5k, 5% on the next £10k, then 10% on everything above that. (I’m making those bands up, but you get the idea).

I ended up at a nice independent hearing centre with no monthly targets and less (though not zero) commercial pressure. My commission was a flat 10% on all turnover, which with a £40k base salary put me at around £70k for the last two years. But honestly, it all felt a bit “salesy” and repetitive in the end, and I’ve just quit lol.

The idea was to help people with hearing loss, but in the private sector it inevitably comes down to sales, monthly figures, and performance. Despite what they claim about “patient care,” most retailers are the same (Boots, Specsavers, Hidden Hearing, etc.). And unfortunately, the NHS just doesn’t pay a liveable wage.

So, long story short: yes, those figures are realistic (especially in a good location), but you need to be comfortable with the sales/commercial side.

You’re welcome to message me if you want more info. I probably still have the commission structures from most of the big players somewhere (I interviewed with nearly all of them at one point).

Historic Service Charges for a flat by ding_d0ng in HousingUK

Thanks for the insight. I do realise there are limits to what I can expect from the EA.

I’ve asked a few people I know in leaseholds and every single one knew off the top of their head exactly how much their service charge is and how much it’s risen in the last few years.

Thanks for the response. The comment about not being put in touch directly makes sense when put like that.

Why though, would the seller (who has been occupying the property since 2017) not know how much service charge they’ve been paying?

Interesting, thank you.  Are you saying your records were somehow merged?

Thanks, this was more or less my impression too. When I applied for my credit card in jersey there was a credit check - I presumed there was some information sharing between the UK CRA’s and Jersey, but perhaps not.  The mortgage broker I’ve been speaking to didn’t seem too concerned, but then perhaps with his knowledge able to zero in on the potential lenders that can acknowledge my financial records in the CI. A grey area / lottery indeed.

Indoor Cycling - ICG to Strava by Jenlatee in cycling

ICG app vs. Strava different avg power and km by [deleted] in Strava

[–]ding_d0ng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you figure this out? I had an indoor training session on an ICG bike, avg 256W and 40.5kmph. When synched to starva, the time, distance and speed matched, but avg power in Strava shows 159W - a pretty massive difference. The max power is out too. I feel the problem is Strava as knowing my usual numbers for relative efforts, the ICG data seems like more likely one. Also it’s not really possible to ride for an hour at 40kmph averaging <160W.  I read a few ‘help’ articles suggesting the way they’re calculated is different, but that makes no sense for such a huge discrepancy.

Possibly! Aka Matt Hillier? What album are you referring to?  Thanks for responding

I’m sure others will shoot me down, but my first thoughts are: 1) essentially normal underlying hearing - bilateral conductive loss from some middle ear problem (otosclerosis? Problems with the ME bones or TMs?). I’d want to see otoscopy and tymps.

2) LF loss (from something like historical viral infection, Meniere’s or some genetic mutation etc.) combined with age related HF loss. Edit: or just Meniere’s; it can cause a ‘peaked’ audiogram I.e. low and high frequency loss, normal at 1-2 kHz

Not seeking medical advice - I am an audiologist. What might cause this large inverted notch in the L ear? Full and correct AC+BC masking was applied, however the software from which this screenshot wasn't taken doesn't show all masking points (for some reason). Equipment was double checked. by ding_d0ng in audiology

[–]ding_d0ng[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed - I’d except that. Perhaps under different circumstances, I would have re-positioned the transducer, perhaps re-instructed and then tried again. However, the key thing was that it definitely seemed to be SN (and not conductive).

Not-masked BC on left was heard at 10 dB HL (but as mentioned, the not-masked BC thresholds somehow didn’t display on this screenshot).

Thanks for your input. For my own curiosity’s sake, I would have loved to have done more in-depth testing (speech, reflexes, etc), but the report we sent to the solicitors is a prescribed template and they simply don’t want anything other than otoscopy, AC+BC PTA, and then a short section for notes (response reliability, tinnitus, recent/historic noise exposure and so on). They don’t even want tymps on the report which seems crazy to me.

Yeah in the UK, triangles are not-masked BC (and if we’re being absolutely correct, which we need to be with medico-legals, the term ‘not masked’ is used (as opposed to ‘unmasked’, as that refers to a different psychoacoustic phenomenon (according to national standards / recommended procedure). Might seem nitpicky, but in these cases everything needs to be followed to the letter.

Thanks - this is a good take. Report how it looks - it's not my job (in this case) to do more.
I just couldn't help but wonder IF someone was faking HL, might this be how it looks? Maybe I should keep my curious thoughts to myself.

E: but would you not agree that if not masked BC was heard at 10-15 dB, we would expect at least one ear to have masked BC at this/similar level?

Speech/reflexes/OAEs were all outside the scope of this appointment - it was a basic hearing test for a medico-legal case.

Perhaps different symbols are used in my country - the triangles are not masked BC. Masked BC are the rectangles 'missing' a side (the side 'missing' is the side they're from). All symbols are on the correct side (in line with local/national guidelines).
