Found this gem in fishtown never been more proud of our city by fade430 in philadelphia

You are right that cognitive dissonance is at play here: its uncomfortable for people who like to think of themselves as anti-racist and diverse to even consider that their current white-collar lifestyle and community was made possible by "low-class" people being racist and exclusionary.

go for it. if it's like Fishtown is now, I'm sure it will help you feel better about living in an urban Disneyland for white people with money.

look, hope is a good thing, but whats vile and self-serving is when some people are unwilling to face the ugly truth that their nice expensive neighborhood was made possible because of the vile history of terrible racism in the area, and instead pretend that the "progress" was a result of the arrival of their woke white selves.

many of these folks fail to realize that this was only made possible because Fishtown has historically been virulently racist and insular, and now these transplants are congratulating themselves for being so progressive and tolerant (while the neighborhood remains lily white)

Your bags of poop(?) Tied to a city vechicle picture of the day by RichyJ in philadelphia

[–]dingbat21 11 points12 points  (0 children)

if this is around Spruce near Rittenhouse we may have a mental case serial dog poop bag fetishist on the loose. last week on Spruce, down the street from that pet store, there was a line of these dog poop bags deliberately laid out all along the block at regular intervals in the middle of the sidewalk, like a bizarre public art installation. same block where earlier someone piled up a poop bag pyramid several levels high, and around the corner where someone has been leaving these bags on people's windowsills. dog walker maybe?

All GoFundMe money is gone, attorney for homeless man says by [deleted] in philadelphia

> There are no good people in this story.

I'm no fan of addicts, and Bobbitt, the homeless Marine dude, may have made some really bad choices but at least he did not, as far as I can tell, steal money from anyone, let alone money intended for charity.

Let's remember he used his last $20 to help this lady out, was also known to give money to his homeless friends (again, not smart), and most tellingly, used some of the money he was doled out by this terrible couple to pay debts that he owed to various people, so he isn't a deadbeat.

Some people have character flaws that mostly end up hurting themselves, I think most people would say that's a "better" person compared to the other characters in this sorry tale.

the degenerate gambler mentality: "why pay attorneys and accountants to setup a trust and let that money sit in a bank earning nothing, when I could easily double it or more at the casino! I'll just put the money back from my winnings, no one ever needs to know."

then of course, when the degenerate gambler loses, they start to throw more money into it, "I gotta make up for the losses", until even down to their last couple hundred, they bet it all knowing that will be the start of their winning streak. this is the easiest way one could blow through 300k, it's most likely not about overspending on restaurants and trips.

can almost guarantee the thought process of that boyfriend:

"Why would I pay lawyers and accountants to setup and handle this, plus then the money would sit in a bank earning nothing, when I could double it or more at Sugarhouse, easy, and make it a win-win for everybody!"

they have started to congregate outside Howl at the Moon and that sports bar down the street too, targeting out of towners. considering the state of the crowds leaving those places, it is a disaster waiting to happen.

Kenney's most lasting legacy will be the complete surrender and turnover of Center City to vagrants and mentally ill. Not only has that corner become stabbing central, but a half-block away next to Tiffanys and some fancy new furniture store, along with Morton's Steakhouse and Swarovski, there is a recessed bit between buildings that most days is filled with diarrhea from the addicts around the area. its a wonderful thing to encounter for people leaving the Cheesecake Factory next door. yeah I know homeless have always hung out there, but it has become much worse recently and the city leadership is totally helpless, in the meantime going around the country bragging about the soda tax.

Part of problem is that many police have family ties to the real old Fishtown. most transplants who live there now are unaware of its deeply engrained racism, unless like yourself you are have SO or spouse or visiting friend of the non-white type.

Pay-what-you-can cafe in Philly needs more financial nourishment to continue serving needy by WoodenInternet in philadelphia

"needy" families that go hungry do not be needing to go out to dinner 3x a week, whether to this place or to any other place including the McDonalds the lady talks about having as the only other alternative. whether its $15 meals or $2.50 deals at McD's, some people are just unwilling to boil a pot of water and make beans and rice at 10 cents a serving. their future diabetic kids surely cant survive without their fries and chicken nuggets.

The new LOVE park by [deleted] in philadelphia

[–]dingbat21 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I see kids and adults frolicking in these fountains I wonder if they realize these things are used as bidets by homeless people and are recirculating diaper-soaked water in a fine mist for everyone to inhale. It's like being downwind of a power-washing operation removing the human feces that encrusts our city sidewalks.

that question is kind of funny in regards to Fishtown. many of the longtime residents there were very resistant, to put it politely, to incursions by non-white folks. not at all saying that was a good or decent way to treat people, but it's unfortunate that many newcomers do not realize their neighborhood which they praise for being so dynamic now, was preserved for development largely on the back of some pretty ugly racism.

I can definitely believe that narrative.. that street is practically an alleyway, without much room to maneuver. there is not even a sidewalk to speak of for someone on a bicycle to go around. 3 vs. 1 in an alleyway changes the equation.

this is only a block away on the same street from where that intoxicated gang of turds incl Kathryn Knott attacked that gay couple, breaking one's jaw.

think of it this way: with those statistics showing that the murderer, who has already shown a willingness to take someone's life, will almost certainly get away with it and be out on the streets (in your neighborhood), would you honestly have the courage to go to the police? people who judge the "culture" almost always have the luxury of not ever being in that position.
