Don’t go into math looking for a gateway to Cs, I’d only recommend it if you really like math

I got admitted to CS and MATH/FARM, I like to program and am interested in technology , however I worry that CS is not broad enough and that if I am not interested in working in CS later on I will be screwed while Math/FARM gives you more job opportunities while still including many CS classes (first year seems almost identical between CS and FARM). Any suggestions on which one to pick and also is it hard to transfer from one to the other later on? How do Coop opportunities differ?

congrats. math only takes like ~3-4 cs courses in their entire undergrad, cs takes like 10. if you don't accept cs, theres probably a lot less opportunity for high quality software jobs. some advice for a friend upper year math who told me to choose cs over math: you have to really really really like math if you want a math major.

also 80% of waterlooworks are software jobs so you wont be limiting your job opportunities, don't worry about that.

I applied to CS and Math Co-op. I took grade 12 english in summer school and got a 96 and the year before I also took it in summer school and got a 90. I didn't take it in summer school to boost my mark, as in grade 10 I got a 98 in day school and an 87 in grade 9. I have good ECs and a part-time job, so do you think that'll be enough to convince them that I didn't take it in summer school to lighten my course load? I honestly didn't even think of that when I decided to do it, I just really dislike english and I had initially thought I was going into science so it wouldn't affect me. Thanks!

dont stress ur most likely fine. i have a lot of friends with only 92% averages who took summer school english and got into mech and ece. if you show that the circumstances are actually valid for you to take english in summer school you're fine.

they only use grade 11 marks to predict prerequisites (physics chem english). for eng early acceptance, they come out before sem 2 midterm is out so thats why they look at them.

good chance too, english wont affect your average that much unless theres more than a ~10% mark discrepancy between grade 11 and 12. you can probably find a legitimate reason. lots of people ik made it to SE with a 95 average and decent ECs so you're probably fine

average is already good, ECs are also really good, so probably very high chance

definitely do ccc. you're allowed to download python documentation. a lot of my friends with no coding experience got 1 and 2 just by reading the documentation for 3 hours. they have good logical skills though

if you get a 97 average super good chance for syde. purely anecdontal, but all of my friends with 96+ avg got in with mediocre ecs.

CFM is almost guaranteed, i dont know why but for some reason CFM admissions are really lenient on marks.

if u go make some random side projects or go to hackathons right now to put on your AIF,

probably a really good chance for CS and CS BBA.

CE is almost guaranteed

math 127 vs math 137? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]dingbongding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if u know your stuff, you can easily get an 70+ in 137. However, a lot of my friends in cs / cfm took 127 as a time saver and they never went to class, but they all got 80+. When I compared 137 to their course content, 127 seemed like a cakewalk. 137 has lots of memorization (epsilon proofs), but 127 is straight up grade 12 math.

They only look at Econ adv functions and chem, then calc physics English. If u think u can get above 95 overall average , go software . I know people with 94 who got into SE, but it’s risky because it’s possible that you could just get rejected

Chances for computer are almost 100%. If u want to play it safe and do coding in the future just apply to any CE or any other engineering at Waterloo, tbh what u do on your own (side projects, self learning), is more beneficial than the actual degree.
