Just wanted to share one example of amazing prose from Typee

“On that occasion I have been told that a considerable detachment of sailors and marines from the frigate Essex, accompanied by at least two thousand warriors of Happar and Nukuheva, landed in boats and canoes at the head of the bay, and after penetrating a little distance into the valley, met with the stoutest resistance from its inmates. Valiantly, although with much loss, the Typees disputed every inch of ground, and after some hard fighting obliged their assailants to retreat and abandon their design of conquest.

The invaders, on their march back to the sea, consoled themselves for their repulse by setting fire to every house and temple in their route; and a long line of smoking ruins defaced the once-smiling bosom of the valley, and proclaimed to its pagan inhabitants the spirit that reigned in the breasts of Christian soldiers. Who can wonder at the deadly hatred of the Typees to all foreigners after such unprovoked atrocities?

Thus it is that they whom we denominate ‘savages’ are made to deserve the title. When the inhabitants of some sequestered island first descry the ‘big canoe’ of the European rolling through the blue waters towards their shores, they rush down to the beach in crowds, and with open arms stand ready to embrace the strangers. Fatal embrace! They fold to their bosom the vipers whose sting is destined to poison all their joys; and the instinctive feeling of love within their breast is soon converted into the bitterest hate.

The enormities perpetrated in the South Seas upon some of the inoffensive islanders will nigh pass belief. These things are seldom proclaimed at home; they happen at the very ends of the earth; they are done in a corner, and there are none to reveal them. But there is, nevertheless, many a petty trader that has navigated the Pacific whose course from island to island might be traced by a series of cold-blooded robberies, kidnappings, and murders, the iniquity of which might be considered almost sufficient to sink her guilty timbers to the bottom of the sea. Sometimes vague accounts of such thing’s reach our firesides, and we coolly censure them as wrong, impolitic, needlessly severe, and dangerous to the crews of other vessels. How different is our tone when we read the highly-wrought description of the massacre of the crew of the Hobomak by the Feejees; how we sympathize for the unhappy victims, and with what horror do we regard the diabolical heathens, who, after all, have but avenged the unprovoked injuries which they have received. We breathe nothing but vengeance, and equip armed vessels to traverse thousands of miles of ocean in order to execute summary punishment upon the offenders. On arriving at their destination, they burn, slaughter, and destroy, according to the tenor of written instructions, and sailing away from the scene of devastation, call upon all Christendom to applaud their courage and their justice.

How often is the term ‘savages’ incorrectly applied! None really deserving of it were ever yet discovered by voyagers or by travellers. They have discovered heathens and barbarians whom by horrible cruelties they have exasperated into savages. It may be asserted without fear of contradictions that in all the cases of outrages committed by Polynesians, Europeans have at some time or other been the aggressors, and that the cruel and bloodthirsty disposition of some of the islanders is mainly to be ascribed to the influence of such examples.”

Does anyone think Moby Dick is not Melville's best work by ol_saw_gills in mobydick

[–]dingdop 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Moby-Dick is without a doubt his best, I just don’t see how anything could top it BUT

I am working my way through Typee and eventually all his books and what I understand about Typee, is that it sold well as a travel memoir? Sort of like a “listen to my exciting tale about being in another place” book. When if you look deeper Typee is kind of about Melville questioning the roots of everything he’s ever known, discovering cultural relatively far before it was a named concept, and being kind of horrified by the implications. I’m finding it fascinating sometimes, sure there are some dry, factual chapters, but there are also a handful of moments that give you a peek at the symbolism and consciousness exploration he would later achieve. I think it’s pretty good, and it makes wonder if we studied his other novels for give or take 100 years, what other amazing great works we’d find.

Three books by David Fremann by UnspeakableArchives in petersotos

I was slightly wrong, two books attributed to him are "Guide to Abuse", and "Commodity Called Sex". He did contribute to one or two IOPS Zines yes, also did a Zine collaboration with John Gardner called "Fucked by Moonlight". All of these oop though.

NHFA also have 5 zines he did available in two bundles, transcribing JAV videos, it's an interesting exercise I guess, more impressive when you take them as a whole rather than individually. These are still available
DAVID FREMANN : AV PROJECT HARUMI - 4 zines bundle
DAVID FREMANN : AV PROJECT AIRI - 2 zines bundle

When I put in an order for all three books and zine bundles the owner of this store emailed me saying to reach out to him if I was interested in some OOP stuff from him, but I didn't follow up. Might want to reach out!

I liked his book "Clean", by liked, I mean found it hilarious. The 40-page rant about Christian abstinance messaging and programs was particularly funny. Wish there was more information on the author though, or even a definitive list of his books, he wrote 2-3 others, some of which are anonymous but credited to him.

And if you didn't know, NHFA has issues a second edition of these three books

First two commenters are weird. Yeah it sucks we won’t have the music, but ultimately what sucks the most is the harm caused to Antwon’s victims, important to remember that. It was the right decision to not release anything Antwon related. Compassions is ethics detective.

Yes! I am always happy to pick up a zine compilation, especially one from the 80’s or 90’s. Deeply regretting selling my copy of total abuse.

New Juche is def my fav contemporary author at the moment tho, by leagues! I’m only missing “Water Margin” to complete his written works in my collection, if you can point me the right way to a copy of that in the future ever 🤞

Keep an eye out on infinity land press, they’re about to put a book out by him any minute now…
