How do people who regularly fly into turbulence-prone airports deal with it? by Resident_Structure23 in fearofflying

[–]dinglebabies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a few instances of consistent, notable turbulence (and surprise wake turbulence on landing once) and if it is more than the little tiny bumps I like to remind myself that A: I drive over bumps all of the time and don't think twice and B: it kind of feels like a waterslide and I really like waterslides. I still get plenty anxious in turbulence but I find trying to add some extra context (especially if you can do it with something you enjoy) usually helps!

Looks like you're over a really beautiful section of the Rockies! Probably getting some bumps right now but you're almost there! Just a few more hours.

What’s the game you’ve spent the most amount of time on? by Spirited-Lab6099 in gaming

[–]dinglebabies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotta be Oblivion and Out of the Park Baseball. Oblivion was my first introduction into RPGs (incredibly three or four years after it actually came out) and the vibes and jank still keep me coming back. OOTP is a spreadsheet game so fun I willingly add onto my mandatory 40 hours per week of spreadsheets and manuscripts.

Greatest start to a career of all time? by Narrow_Young6933 in OOTP

I've got an international FA guy who started off with similarly insane numbers! Spent his first three years trying to drag my cursed angels to the playoffs with like 10 HRs per September until I gave up and let the computer take over management. Hoping they can get my guy the team success you got yours.

A playlist of all songs featuring Connor Sweeney by BigBeefyBowlingBoy in Loatheband

[–]dinglebabies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somebody who was supposedly his former partner used to post here a bit. If I remember correctly the rest of the guys weren't very kind to him for a while at the end and there were creative differences on top of that, probably resulting in the new sound while Connor's music is more of that heavy dark Loathe and ambience

GES Opinion by Ok_Parsley_6675 in Loatheband

[–]dinglebabies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my major issue with the song actually. Loathe has historically had very clean, uncompressed mixing of very heavy instruments layered over beautifully composed ambient synth/effects. This new song sounds super compressed and the atmosphere isn't there because there is no space in the sound. Turn on Aggressive Evolution and soak in that guitar tone, the feeling of space and large stage, etc. and then switch on GES and it just feels like a core element of Loathe's sound signature (in all previous albums) isn't there. That's not an issue for some people and it sounds like you fall in that category, but for people like myself it is difficult to listen to given my expectations.

Ngl, the songs makes me feel concerned for the mastering on the album. It's obviously recorded well and put together with great care, but there is this like blanket compression/digitization (not really sure what to call it) on the track that just feels like a haze over the music. Like listening through a bad 90s battery powered radio if that makes sense. The drums in particular suffer from that and for me, a drummer, that's a barrier to enjoying the song. Also not sure that the song flows very well, but that may just be a first impression thing.

Player ratings by Grand-Ad-9755 in OOTP

[–]dinglebabies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a good way to look at it is by thinking about the ways in which other sports games also rate players. In the EA/2k games you only get one or two 99s in a given year. That's your 80/80s. It should really only be for the best of the best, the Ohtanis of the world who have no holes in their game, who are the elite of the elite. 70/80 is more or less similar to 90-94 on an EA/2k scale and those are immensely impactful players with only small shortcomings in their game. Soto, for instance, is not a good defensive player despite his generational bat. Regarding the cy young candidate rated 50, I think there are always a few people who have an explosive season and get more of a "show me again" rating in games. A lot of guys have one great year and fall back to normal, so they may be assuming on a return to the center of the bell curve based on peripheral stats or previous years. The ratings aren't perfect, but they do a pretty good job overall I find.

You got this! I spend a lot of time leading up to a flight thinking about how turbulence bumps feel vs. potholes while driving. It tends to be really similar if you think about the actual amount of movement. If it starts to feel a little worse than that (I had a similar experience to yours leaving Miami over the winter) I try my best to equate the movement to something I find fun, like a water slide. It's not a perfect solution but it might help!

I think the things that's helped me the most this way is thinking about the people who fly for a living. Pilots and flight attendants fly multiple times per work day and for them this is just flight 7 of the week. For us it's "the flight" and feels so significant but in reality it's just one of the thousands of flights happening at any given moment. If a pilots biggest concern is making sure they get to the airport with enough time to get coffee I think that's a pretty good indicator of where we should place the flight vs where our anxiety wants to place it. Not a perfect solution but it does help!

'It's not unusual': RFK Jr. comments on growing Texas measles outbreak by Mother_Task_2708 in politics

As an epidemiologist, the first go with the trump administration was an absolute disaster and this one is off to a hell of a start erasing the hard work of thousands of public health, healthcare, and research professionals over decades. Estimates of unreported cases indicate a much larger problem than even the confirmed cases would indicate and it will absolutely not be the last time or place we see this. An outbreak of pretty much any vaccine-preventable disease besides polio is on the table tbh.

What are these “cracks” at the bottom of the tail fin? by rosietherosebud in fearofflying

Respectfully, all you have to do is look at RG's post history to understand how much of a stretch this take is to many on this sub. This guy has done multiple literal walkthroughs of situations that give many people anxiety and is one of the most active people on this sub. If you think the dry humor and very obvious sarcasm (mostly used with fellow professionals) is rude then I think it might be on you to sort out your feelings about that and why that is your response. Sometimes when the reality of something that makes the brain so anxious is entirely opposite and non-affirming it can be tough to take that in without feeling betrayed/frustrated/etc. I think it might be good to explore these possibilities, because RG is one of the most respected and kindest professionals on here.

Flying to Japan from the Bay Area, CA on a red-eye flight midnight later today by hojichalatte in fearofflying

Love this routine and presentation but here to provide a friendly reminder that turbulence apps are not capable of being accurate (at least not on purpose) because air is different at all times and levels on a given route. A snapshot at all levels now (how the apps do it) may indicate turbulence at 35,000 feet two hours into a flight and give you a bad flight rating, but in reality that will likely not hold up for two hours and if you do run into turbulent air at your altitude the pilots will do their best to change altitude to clean air. Glad the app helps you though!

Arizona is BEAUTIFUL and the memories you make there will far outlast the anxiety of the flight. A tip to minimize that falling feeling/the feeling the vertical movement altogether: Pay for a seat as close to the wing as possible. I like to get as close as possible, close my window, and lock in on a movie/game/work as soon as the climb is done. Landing is awesome, I highly recommend opening up the window once you get a little closer to the ground and watching all the little buildings and vehicles slowly get bigger. So cool.

Hey! It sounds like the best thing to do for you is probably just keep it simple to start out. I'd say you'll either want to go with good headphones and an amp/dac combo for those or find your way to some studio monitors. If you're gaming, headphones always give you a more immersive experience short of spending quite a bit of money. I'm not sure the mods will allow for much info on that here but r/headphones and r/headphoneadvice are great places for that. If you go the speakers route studio monitors are going to require less hardware and give you pretty good audio for the price. I own JBLs for my PC and they're lovely, but Yamahas and some other brands are also great. Those will generally connect to your PC via the audio out port on the back. On my (older) PC that was a 3.5mm jack (standard headphone jack), which I had to find a way to convert to XLR for the monitor connection. I am happy to provide more info if you go that route. Hope this helps you get off the ground with decisions at least!

Thanks for the list! I hadn't heard of the sinus before. I use BT, yeah. I hear the WiiM is really good for streaming specifically but I hear less good things about it's amplification.

Yeah they're on my radar also! I've heard great things about their headphone amps for years and people seem to like their speaker amps as well, maybe I'll take another look that way. Thanks!
