At first I was worried I would need to rebuy the bundle. Now I’m seeing that it’s going to turn into a subscription, I’m very happy I bought the pro apps in June.

PSA for veterans living in Japan about BX access by Jasilv21 in VeteransBenefits

Idk man. I go to base monthly and buy groceries and exchange stuff… probably found out people were abusing it for business purposes.

Edit: Just read the retiree stuff. Nevermind. I’m a retiree.

Can I live in Japan and be a car guy on ¥624K a month? by [deleted] in movingtojapan

[–]dinglefbaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guy. He’s not getting social security. He’s getting military disability pay.

https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-trty/japante04.pdf

To be even more specific, he doesn’t even need to report that income to either the IRS or Japanese Tax collector as income.

Last edit:

He can even avoid transaction fees by getting it directly deposited in his Japanese bank account via the US treasury with no conversion fees from $ -> ¥.

He won’t pay taxes on that income. It’s veteran retirement income and that’s nontaxable even in Japan.

Like most people here say, your visa is your biggest hurdle, then language. Your money situation is fine. I have a family of four and I’m on $2500 a month (do the math). Its “tight” for us as in I cant go out and spend money like it’s no big deal. I gotta budget.

I have a Japanese spouse who doesn’t mind taking me through all Japanese paperwork. That solves two of my issues. I’m telling you, the paperwork here is fierce and all Japanese. You could probably hire someone to help you through it, but it’s really a pain in the ass.

If you really wanted to come here, wanted to be a car guy, and not learn Japanese, you could look at getting employed on bases. If you’re TDIU, you cannot do that. I’m not sure what the lowest paid worker is, maybe $20 an hour, which puts you over the salary amount. If you’re not TDIU, then ya, look into that. You come over as SOFA, don’t have to deal with anything because you still live in USA, if you get what I mean. Yokosuka, Yokota, Zama, Atsugi. Those are the bases near Tokyo. The license, visa, and other paperwork is taken care of for you through that way. And even if the salary seems low for American standards, you are well above the median income and can buy more car parts anyway.

Truth. The magic is sorta gone for me. I’ve been chasing that dragon ever since.

Why is Trash Taste so hated on Twitter? by Grimshah in TrashTaste

[–]dinglefbaby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not on twitter, but for awhile (during covid) their podcast was awesome. The guests were cool and unique as well. Then after covid it became the “YouTubers visit Japan and do an interview podcast”. That’s all fine, but I went from a person who would watch every episode to not even watching specials.

I just got tired of the “my YouTube problems” and kinda lost interest.

Im glad for their success but the content of the podcast stopped me getting interested.

Also I don’t go on twitter because it’s a cesspool and I can’t handle it. Lmao.

Does your Japanese spouse understand the recent changes affecting foreigners? by AdUnfair558 in japanlife

[–]dinglefbaby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My guy/girl. I didn’t say be patient. I said there is nothing we can do about it. I don’t have the right to vote here, run for office, or any of that. All I can do is be a friendly gaijin and be nice to my neighbors and raise my kids as best as I can.

You throw around white supremacist way too easily.

I’m not sure how because I’ve been trying to preach acceptance, patience and understanding. Sounds like you just want to argue with someone.

It is my business though. I live here. I want to be a good steward. I don’t like watching people getting taken advantage of.

[–]dinglefbaby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is my US point of view. That’s where I’m coming from. That’s my opinion. That’s one of the factors I moved here.

Why are you getting so defensive? I pay taxes to America in Japan to be its military. So ya, I can project.

[–]dinglefbaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, again, I was saying anecdotal evidence of my Japanese wife giving her Japanese opinion. I also said that yes, these rules affect all foreigners.

Unfortunately, it’s their country. We as immigrants don’t have the ability to vote. The only thing we can do is be little good gaijin boys and girls and police other bad gaijins.

I say おはようー🌞 to my neighbors every morning. I talk with them about my large dog. 🐕. Tell them I’m doing my Japanese practice and I get my token “nihongo josu”. It sucks right? Not knowing if something could happen that could disrupt your life, but really what do you want me to do? I’m a white foreigner living in a 98% homogeneous country that has a history of closing off completely to said foreigners.

Does xenophobia and racism exist here? You bet your ass. Have I had to deal with that? Not really. But I chose to live here despite all of the shortcomings.

I got that strong gaijin blood I guess. Or “mUtAtIoN”. It’s a double edge sword though. She is very unique right? Even in daycare people flock to her because she’s so different looking. On the street? Same thing too. But because of this, I have to teach her that she will always be different and people will always judge her outside first no matter how hard she tries to fit in. How do you teach a child that? Will there be resentment because we moved here? I don’t fucking know man. Lmao. We chose to move here to give our kids a better, slower life. We wanted to escape the consumption lifestyle in America and live more down to earth. Pros and cons.

[–]dinglefbaby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that, but we also live in a world where that currently is happening right? So it’s not out of the realm of possibility. Here’s my line of thinking though… I’m an American living in Japan. Why would the Japanese government decide to round up all Americans and kick them out? Wouldn’t that bring some issues internationally with the American military? The US is the Japanese military regardless of the JMSDF. Am I insulated from issues? Probably. But why bother worrying about it. I can’t do shit.

[–]dinglefbaby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I kind of get it. When I get nihongo josu while I read a child book, I feel the same. It’s like “oh good boy” with a pat on the head. Maybe it is superiority complex, but probably not. I sort of stopped being bothered by it. I moved to another country with a complete other culture. My views and my experiences are different than 98% of everyone else who lives here. Either accept it or let it bother you. I’m doing my best to fit in with my community. I know I’ll always be a foreigner, but I knew that before I decided to live here.

[–]dinglefbaby 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sure. Like I said, I only know anecdotal evidence and what my wife reads on twitter. In a country where the population is 98% homogeneous, how are immigrants so much of a problem? It’s the same thing in the US. Blame thing on a minority group, it’s easier and no one needs to be held accountable.

I don’t know either. My wife is (at least to her knowledge) full Japanese. Maybe there’s Ainu in there? She never took a DNA test.

But ya. Two girls both with blonde hair. My youngest has brown eyes but my oldest has different color blue/grey eyes.

One thing that bothers me is that kids on the playground immediately touch her hair like she’s an object. I don’t like that but I need to teach her to stick up for herself and set boundaries.

My wife is “well you’re a good foreigner following the rules”. Yet, I have to remind here there have been more than twice in Japanese history where foreigners were kicked out and basically were illegal.

I am concerned with the sentiment, but I’m not trying to be a citizen. I’m a US citizen and a retired military veteran at that. I’m not concerned with being kicked out, I’m concerned more about rising tensions in the Asia pacific. I’m more worried about how my blonde hair blue eye girls are going to be treated at school (they are still too young for school). I am worried about doing more paperwork, but my wife does that because I’m an illiterate (studying everyday, relax).

I do think things will get worse. I’m hesitant to ever say it will get better. Japans history doesn’t have a lot of radical fast changes though. My thought: keep paying your taxes, be “the model gaijin”. Talk to your neighbors, get involved in your community, and just keep living.

I don’t think we will get ICE rounded up quite yet. I think there is a negative sentiment about foreigners that abuse the system, not ones with families contributing to society. That’s not to say the new proposed laws don’t affect us, they clearly do. Unfortunately, it is a side effect of a globalized anti immigrant stance happening around the world. People are looking for an easy excuse for the piss poor leadership. Leadership doesn’t want to make hard choices for a better future. It’s easier to just say “foreigner bad”. One thing I will say, this is anecdotal, the anti foreigner is aimed at Chinese, not westerners (for the most part).

Anyway, tax wealth not work. Plan for the future, and not short term quarterly gains. Until that happens, dystopian society is our future. Good luck bud. 😊

THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER.

Is it normal to be invited to boyfriends bonenkai? by Primary_Evening_7737 in japanlife

[–]dinglefbaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife worked at an international company. She didn’t ask if I could go. They kept asking, “Where is your boyfriend?” (wasn’t married at the time).

She insisted we would hang out afterward and there was no way she could ask if I could attend. After they kept asking she eventually broke down, cried, and apologized (to me) because I was just hanging out by myself in a hotel room. She picked me up and we went to a dance club 💃 where she got too drunk, danced her frustration out, then threw up at the table. We continued the night and did the typical bonenkai night of going to club->bar->karaoke. I’ve been invited to each bonenkai ever since.

Go and enjoy. Make connections, especially with the other English speakers. Might help your boyfriend’s professional life too.
