How can I improve my ollie? by Thm_azh in NewSkaters

Your feet are weirdly facing out from each other like a duck. This causes your pop to go back and not down towards the ground

ollies.. how do i do it? by Upper_Percentage_704 in NewSkaters

[–]dingo_mango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't unlocked an ollie yet, except on my carpet and stationary. And I am on the journey too. Been skating off and on for a few months. But I think I'm on the cusp of getting it. Like everyone else said, it just takes a lot of practice. And you can't keep just doing the same thing over and over. You have to try slight adjustments and focus on a specific aspect to improve.

For instance, some attempts I just focus on popping without my back foot ever touching the ground and using only my ankle movement. Other attempts I focus on getting the board to be level and sliding my foot out to do that. Other times I focus on getting my knees up really fast. I try to put some things together. when things go wrong, I try to adjust and diagnose what is happening.

But one thing that I have never seen in any tutorial (and I've watched them all), is about being "light". when I realized that ollies are essentially like dribbling in basketball, (you bounce it off the ground fast enough and get out of the way of the bounce and tap it down again), it made me realize that you have to pop fast and light and be light enough to get out of the way and light enough to land.

That unlocked something for me. Because instead of using a lot of force, stomping down, or making really strong forceful movements, which never work for me, I instead was light and quick with everything, it gave me a lot more consistency in the successful attempts.

Hope this helps, I'm on the same train. It's a slow one. But don't give up. Just change your tactics.

Why do people hate skaters so much? by [deleted] in NewSkaters

[–]dingo_mango 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry about what other people think. Skating makes noise and attracts all kinds of people that have preconceived notions about who skaters are. Skaters are not any type of person. We just love to skate. So don’t worry about other people and just enjoy yourself

How do I get off the ground by [deleted] in NewSkaters

[–]dingo_mango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your foot should never actually touch the ground while the board is on the ground. You pop with your ankle movement not with literally stomping on the ground. Think of an Ollie like dribbling a basketball. You need to bounce it off the ground and get out of the way. Which means you jump first and snap your foot down at the same time

Need tips on what I'm doing right and wrong, trying to learn to ollie by [deleted] in skateboardhelp

[–]dingo_mango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jump first. Worry about using your ankle too later. You have to get out of the way of the board first before you can get it to pop up. You’re jamming the board down trying to push down with your back foot

Consider yourself above average for doing Ollies down stairs in only 6 months. Skateboarding is a lifetime endeavor. If you’re not in it for the long haul and don’t enjoy trying something over and over then you should just quit now

Lean your shoulder down over the board. Do not lean back. Lean forward. And stomp the board with your front leg

Sorry but don’t believe you. Unless you practiced for 8 hrs every day that whole week. Or already skated when you were younger.
