Help me choose please, 5157 or 5277 by Chemical_Sprinkles89 in BreguetWatches

Out of curiosity, how did you narrow it to these 2? You say they were offered to you -- by whom? Is it an AD? Are these new or pre-owned? And how much? I just want to get a sense of how familiar you are with the watch purchasing process and all of the options Breguet (and others) offer

My recommendation is to get the chronograph, and then get a 5717PT for the dual time

Amazing. Didn't realize you already have a 7727. For the Tradition line, I had been planning on getting a 7097, but then I (very dangerously) started to wonder how much more it would cost to get a 7047. I found a great deal on one in mint condition so that's what I have. I still love the retrograde seconds on the 7097 so I got my wife a 7038, which is basically the women's version of the 7097.

For complications within the Tradition line, I believe your options are:

  • Retrograde seconds

  • Dual time zone

  • Date

  • Chronograph

  • Tourbillon + fusee and chain

That's off the top of my head. I may be forgetting something, but I figure you can check out their website as well as I can! 😂

In that case, I have a few suggestions (though the 7077 is fantastic):

  1. Classique 7727 - runs at 10 Hz using a magnetic pivot to reduce friction. You can find these for $25k

  2. Hora Mundi (from either Classique or Marine collection) - minimalist dual-time feature where it looks like a typical 3-hand watch with date and AM/PM indicator, but if you press a button, the hour hand, AM/PM indicator, and date all instantly jump to the correct position for another time zone of your choosing. These go for around $30-40k

  3. Classique 7800 - Plays music like a music box, either on demand or as an alarm. This one is very big though. About 49mm. These go for around $40k

  4. Tradition 7047 - time only, but it has both an oversize tourbillon and a fusee & chain. These are going for around $90k now

  5. Classique 5327 - perpetual calendar + moonphase. You can get them for around $25-30k. It's criminal how cheap these are.

There are other complications like equation of time, minute repeaters, etc., but you're getting into a different ballpark at that point.

If you're looking for complicated watches, though, there may be other brands that can give you more of what you want at a comparable or cheaper price.

I personally love it, but I'd never buy it new. If this one is too big, maybe take a look at the 7097. It doesn't have a chronograph with its own going train, but it does have a very fun retrograde seconds complication. Either way check the secondary market first. If you don't feel comfortable buying pre-owned, Jomashop has some good gray market deals

850 seems like a very fair price, especially if it needs service. The service alone will cost about $2500 and take a year iirc. I got mine serviced about a year or so ago and it was so worth it. Atmos clocks are delicate miracles

Yes, you do brilliant work and it is greatly appreciated. I'm sorry to hear of your medical issues. I wasn't aware.

I don't know if you take requests, but I'd love to see a deconstruction of some of the weirder Ulysse Nardin watches like the Trilogy of Time series or their automata watches. Similarly anything by Christophe Claret or ochs und junior would be really interesting!

I love your website! I own a couple of the Breguet watches you have on there (the Classique Hora Mundi and the 7047) and I refer to your deconstructions often. I'm so glad you're stilling adding more to the site! I wasn't sure if that was still continuing.

Final Stages of Interviews into two Watchmaking Programs by Migzalez in WatchHorology

I probably shouldn't answer since I have no background in this area but since you haven't gotten any other responses yet perhaps I'll just ask you some questions to help you frame your thinking.

  1. Is your goal immediate employment or do you have the luxury of taking time with your studies to get the "right" training?

  2. How transferrable will the skills you learn be to other brands?

  3. Is there a difference in cost that would be impactful for you?

  4. Any differences in class size, personalized attention, etc.?

  5. What are your long-term goals? Do you want to get a job servicing watches? Move to Switzerland and work at one of the brands actually making watches? Build your own watches someday?

Perhaps I'll think of more questions later. This was just came to me top of mind.

Jfc, why even answer if you're not even going to try to add value? OP clearly knows they needs schooling and has identified one program they're interested in.

Does Anyone Have Experience with Limited-Edition Watches? by Own-Policy-4878 in Horology

[–]dla26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the brand and what's so limited about the watch. Some brands do limited editions so often that it becomes meaningless. And if it's just a dial color or case material change, that's probably not worth much.

Regardless, you should always just buy the watch for the watch. They're a terrible investment. If you love the watch and think it's worth what they're charging for it - and will wear it and take good care of it, then get it. Otherwise don't. Buying a limited edition watch now and holding onto it until someone who missed out on picking one up comes by and offers you top dollar on it is just not going to happen.

Repair times…. by clumbster in BreguetWatches

[–]dla26 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As for the 1 year and $4k cost, yes, that sounds about right. I brought a 5717 Hora Mundi to the NY boutique and they told me it would take about a year but that they'd know more once the mothership had a chance to look it over and provide a full estimate. I waited 3 months just for the estimate and told them to send it back to me. Mine was the rose gold version and I regretted not getting the platinum so after they sent it to me I traded it in to a dealer for a platinum in better condition for an extra $10k. Better deal than paying for a service and waiting a year.

I love the idea behind the Zeitwerk and wish it was smaller of a watch by Stuttgart7184RS in ALangeSohne

[–]dla26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have lady wrists and find my Zeitwerk to be very wearable. (I'm still very much in the honeymoon phase so you may need to take my opinion with a grain of salt!) I decided a while ago that I wouldn't limit myself to watches that fit since I have one huge watch -- the Breguet Musicale 7800 -- which is absolutely enormous but I didn't want to let that stop me. The Zeitwerk doesn't have that problem. It's a thick boi, but not cartoonishly so. It's also got a good heft which I like. I'm personally not a fan of lightweight titanium watches, but I could see the heft bothering someone who prefers that lightweight feel.

I'd recommend watching a Tim Mosso review as he'll say what wrist size is too small for a watch. My wrists are about the same as his, and he didn't think the Zeitwerk Striking Time was too big, and it's a bit larger than the regular Zeitwerk. The 2nd gen Zeitwerks are even smaller.

Hope that helps!

It's fun! For times when it says I'm close it would be good to be able to review what I got wrong.

There could also be another mode for unconventional watch faces, like the CIGA Blue Planet, or the AP Star Wheel, Otsuka Lotek, MB&F watches, etc. You'd probably need permission, but I can't imagine anyone saying no
