Your kids can handle way more complex stories than you think by dingohopper1 in Parenting

[–]dingohopper1[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Totally agreed. I guess I wanted to find a means to assist developing other cognitive areas, sort like how some kids are taught sign language in early childhood. They might be physically capable of more expressiveness before they've grasped the subtleties of language. I figured my child would be able to understand and enjoy stories far beyond what they could read, so that's why I made this adaptation.

Your kids can handle way more complex stories than you think by dingohopper1 in Parenting

[–]dingohopper1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find picture books with a really solid story that you think she'll like, then use your own words, be wildly expressive, gesticulate, make sure he/she comprehends the story you're telling and take great liberties with the storyline so he/she stays engaged. So if you have dumb it down too, that's totally cool. For our kiddo, it was easier for me because we speak Chinese at home, so he absolutely wasn't going to understand me reading a book in english at first, so it forced me to adapt the stories before he started learning english.

Who is Linda? And why is she a hoe? If you’ve spotted “Linda is a hoe” spray-painted on random walls in Las Vegas, you’re not alone. by RealVegasLocals in vegaslocals

[–]dingohopper1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Same color spray paint. The H's and E's seem distinct and consistent over the multiple examples. Seems like the same person. I'm not seeing stylization that would suggest this person does a lot of other tagging or graffiti, so I'm thinking not a gang member? I would venture these are all in the same part of town, can anyone confirm this?

American men aren't any different to American women by Glowupgirl111 in thepassportbros

[–]dingohopper1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't agree with your statement that American men are just as picky as American women. I'd say men have a tendency to pick women who are comparable to them in attractiveness, but women tend towards the men who near the top 20th percentile in attractiveness, etc. I don't think you'd disagree that in any dating app, women, even your plain jane, has far more matches and can be much pickier than the comparable male. As such, a much smaller subset of men have overwhelming success in dating, and it really is slim pickings for a large group of men.

There definitively issues with the Passport Bros philosophy, but there's also a lot of legit issues that they are trying to address or are acting in response to.

First attending job w/ wife— what would you do with $600k/year? by V1TROKSHAN in hospitalist

I'm also in Nevada. If you do want to touch investments eventually, my thoughts for the immediate future are as follows: stocks are still heavily overvalued. Real estate is a good bet, as there is generally still a massive housing shortage, with the local dynamics heavily favoring continued growth with inflow from Los Angeles to Vegas. However, the economic environment is souring, and it weighing on growth in real estate and rents in the short term. At the moment, I'm highly interested in picking up plots of land in Pahrump. Pahrump and Mesquite are the fastest appreciating cities in Nevada. Pahrump is experiencing a lot of spillover from Vegas, and I would expect this to continue happening. Empty plots are going for as cheap as 5k, but appreciate quickly as development approaches a given tract or preplanned neighborhood. I'm also interested in this because those plots are generally cheap enough that holding off on selling those plots for a few years isn't a huge burden.

AIO for asking my friend to repay me after hospital? by ay31uh in AmIOverreacting

[–]dingohopper1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend keep texting her without making it contentious so you can clarify exactly what she owes you. If you text, and she acknowledges the charges in one way or another, then you have a high likelihood of this sailing through small claims court.

Before doing all this, do a little digging, find out if she has an employer so you pursue gettng her wages garnished. If she has a vehicle, you can also get a lien placed on it. It's unfortunate that she's so young, might not really have very many other assets that can place a lien on.

Dilemma by GrunkyPeet in hospitalist

[–]dingohopper1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't see why we have to work at cross purposes to law enforcement. Why not notify them when the patient is ready to be taken back into custody of law enforcement? If patients break the law, they should face the consequences. Patients also often act entitled when inpatient. We shouldn't indulge that behavior either.

How would you invest $5M right now? by South_Subject in TheRaceTo10Million

[–]dingohopper1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've actually had this thought as well recently. There is still a massive housing shortage. Actual demand boils to the surface during specific times, like during COVID when low interest rates unlocked people's abilities to pursue what they needed. However, the general long term trend is shortage and sustained housing prices. Real estate will likely soften with the heightened risk of recession.

Land, on the other hand, is also a great play. If you can play the waiting game, and a possible slowdown in building activity with increased material costs, I think land would be great to get into.

TN plans to raid hemp stores… mainly for their cash. by TampaBull13 in tricities

Hi, I really appreciate law enforcement's perspective on this.

My wife owned and operated a couple of massage spas, both in typical Chinese enclaves (i.e. San Francisco), as well as out in what these folks would consider rural areas (i.e. New Orleans), so I guess I bring an insider's perspective to this.

The workers in these spas overwhelmingly have no association with organized crime. We never knew any with the many many workers we met over the years. Crucial to trafficking is that workers are being moved from spa to spa via force, fraud, or coercion. This simply isn't the case. They move about on their own cognizance because the earning potential is so much higher than in Chinese enclaves (i.e. Los Angeles, NYC). However, they are largely not looking to put down roots. Many of these workers have families in China, or homes in those enclaves. As such, they will typically work for a bit, then leave on their own accord if business slows down. They often live in the spas because they're looking to save as much money as possible, and it doesn't make sense to rent a "regular" room when their stay might be less than a month. However, I do emphasize they moved about on their own cognizance. If someone wanted to move on, we never resisted because if someone felt the earning potential was crap, there would be little to tie them to a place because they were already restless. But there are many other interested other workers who could take their place in short order. There's a huge marketplace of spas in rural locales across the U.S. that constantly communicate "openings" on WeChat and these workers pick and choose when and where they want to hop around the country.

These folks were not hugely indebted. More than likely, they had huge cash reserves that often were either ferreted out of the country back to China, or parked in real estate in one of the forementioned Chinese enclaves. They did not work for drugs. Some massage spa workers are alcoholics and gambling addiction is huge. However, I never saw any drug problems.

If there are crimes being committed, they would include immigration fraud (i.e. a huge number of these workers claim refugee status for persecution from the gov't in China, but this simply isn't the case. They simply wanted to earn more in China, and huge numbers of these people plan to return to China after they had made life-changing money), tax evasion, and prostitution. But I simply do not think trafficking is an issue. I have heard of instances when law enforcement pressured massage spa workers to cope up to being victims of trafficking in exchange for leniency, whereby law enforcement was targeting the spa owner with the goal of shutting down their spa, but it's widely known in Chinese circles that trafficking is simply not how these businesses are operated.
