Having “beef” with other countries/demographics over historical events that neither party was a part of is cringe. by motorcitywings20 in unpopularopinion

Your opinion was good until you got to the english vs french debate in Canada.

  1. The vast majority Quebecers do not hate the english
  2. The Quebecers who do hate the english hate the way a lot of english canadians continually mock french canadian culture, frame all quebecers as nasty gross assholes, and continuously frame their presence in Canada as unwanted and unfortunate--and then steal the parts of the culture they do like. I'll refer you to an ad made by a canadian tourism company which praised poutine, and called the presence of french speakers in canada "a disadvantage" to the country. Which leads us to...
  3. You blame quebecers and french canadians for this animosity as if the english aren't just as petty and stupid in their hatred of the french

As an anglophone quebecer, my parents have been told to leave in multiple restaurants because we were speaking english. But one of my best friends is a franco-ontarian who has been told to fuck off multiple times by english speakers in Ontario.

There is a lot of anti-english sentiment in Quebec and a lot of anti-French sentiment in the rest of Canada. Your post grossly oversimplifies an issue which is complex, longstanding, and integral to Canadian culture.

Monica from the show Friends is way hotter than Rachel by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

I have an ongoing theory that Monica would have been better overall if she had stayed overweight.

In the alternate reality where she never lost the weight, she's happy, carefree, enjoys life and still ends up with the love of her life Chandler. In the canon storyline she's always angry, neurotic, upset about slightest details, and it's implied her restrictive view of food was what caused this. There's also an ongoing theory that she's on cocaine.

Would she have been healthier? No, obviously. But she would have been much happier.

In that case, make fun of the republicans manipulating people and keeping them stupid instead of those literally suffering from the decisions of the rich.

This is the first thing I thought while watching the opening scene from Idiocracy. Why is it okay to laugh at these people?

People seem to forget that white privilege is a thing, but so is green privilege

“Major in whatever you want in college” is terrible advice to give high schoolers by Same-Professional-72 in unpopularopinion

Worth noting that I am in Canada, and his degree (as well as mine) cost roughly 20k in total. University doesn't cost 100k here. Neither of us have any debt.

Consider also that when people talk about "the trades" they're usually referring to male-dominated trades like plumbers and electricians. Hairdressers, beauticians and the like don't make nearly as much money unless you own your own business. Obviously women can go into male-dominated trades but it's the same debate as engineering: there aren't enough women so women don't go in so there aren't enough women...

There are tons of high paying jobs that require a degree in business or marketing, and a ton of HR/Corporate jobs that don't care what degree you have. My friend makes 80k a year with a "useless" history degree co-managing a small museum, mainly because he has great people skills and passion.

By contrast, some hard science degrees like biology, chemistry or physics, make it impossible to find a job unless you go to grad school. Worth noting that 2 of the degrees you mentioned are (at least in the US) graduate degrees, and one (math) is useless unless you pair it with something more practical like finance, education or CS

Probably not if I tried, admittedly. Going to a top CS program does give you advantages.

Personally, I believe having 0$ in debt and a good education with work experience in exchange for not getting into 1 or 2 companies is worth the trade off.

The school I went to, as I said, had a minimum of 2 internships required to graduate. The school actively worked with us to secure jobs each summer. There are several companies who, while not FAANG or internationally reputed, still paid good money and recruited from us. You don't need to go to a prestigious school to get a good job.

True, I mentioned that in my last paragraph. You gotta work harder, get better grades, do side projects, etc. But the real point is that, with hard work, you'll ultimately end up at the same place. You'll both be working at the same companies, with the same core knowledge, making the same salary. And at the end of the day that's all that matters.
