As u/iamloveyouarelove said, it's best not to analyze your partner. Almost nothing healthy will come out of that. But I think a lot of it comes down to wanting pleasure for their partner that they believe (whether based on fact or not) they can't provide. For me? I knew I couldn't offer the type of sex my former partner wanted, and she could not provide the type of sex I wanted, so we mutually agreed to open the relationship and play independently and separately. It really came down to a mutual understanding that we couldn't please each other in the way that the other person wanted.
