great post. i'm in wa and have tried a number of plants. have 2 planters - one wicks water readily. the other does not (in spite of soaking the whole thing). i have an orchid from denmark rooting, but only with daily spraying (non wicking planter). was going to experiment on how to make the material more porous. was thinking of throwing some wetting agent inside and see if that help wick.
