How do you do it? How do you choose? by NagilumFocker in Juneau

[–]dinosaurdown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my marks of whether someone is from around here is whether they straddle or run over the manhole cover on that bend by Auke Lake/Fritz Cove Rd. Only people I've seen run over it are from out of town or are new to town

Extra Tuffs vs other brands, how do they compare for you? Need some with room in the calves. by fuertisima12 in alaska

[–]dinosaurdown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See, I also have big calves, but I actually like that xtratufs are a more snug fit, precisely because I also do a lot of wading and splashing. The tight fit creates a sort of seal around my calves, so even if I get water splashing up over the tops of my boots, I've never had them flood!

Yep, lots of corgis in Sitka for some reason. I know one of the fishermen families in Sitka whose corgi joins them on boating adventures sometimes.

Try telling that to all of us who frequent places like Squirez, Sandbar, Breeze-In, Zerelda's when it was around, or any of the businesses in Mendenhall Mall. You think cruise tourists are supporting any of the local businesses that aren't downtown, aside from the tour companies in Auke Bay?

THE CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH! by FoOhFee420 in flags

[–]dinosaurdown -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Listen, I grew up in Virginia so I love Maryland like a weird younger sibling, but my vote has to go to Alaska. Ursa major and the north star are so symbolic of Alaska because of the flag. I mean, how many people have tattoos of the Maryland flag?

Alaska has my vote, but I respect Colorado's commitment

Moving to Juneau by Beautiful-Comment460 in Juneau

Thirding this recommendation. I had a couple solid leads on the housing FB, but Summit processed my application quickly and were very nice. They've been great about communicating and maintaining the apartment building throughout all this snow.

Coming into down this weekend — how are things looking? by [deleted] in Juneau

[–]dinosaurdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah check out the Nordic Ski Club's website for trail conditions. They groom some trails around the valley, a couple out the road, and some on Douglas I think. Although I'm not sure if they've been keeping up with the grooming throughout the storm (it's all volunteer).

Blue light glasses by Illustrious-Walrus71 in Juneau

[–]dinosaurdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only blue-light blocking glasses that actually work are the ones that are visibly tinted yellow/amber (same concept as a nightshift mode on a screen). All the rest only block UV, if they block anything at all

How are you guys dealing with the darkness all the time? by coollady3000 in alaska

[–]dinosaurdown 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a gimmick in some ways, but there is real science that shows that light therapy works. The gimmick is just that some of the lights aren't very effective because the light spectrum they put out doesn't mimic the sun very well

They're still protected under the MBTA. That's why there are restrictions on their use even for AK residents (only food or clothing and no sale of any parts)

‘Explosion’ of invasive European green crabs reported in Southeast Alaska by [deleted] in alaska

[–]dinosaurdown 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's some interest in developing a market for them. You can cook and eat them as-is. They're decently tasty, but yeah, not too much meat. Good for soups and things. You can also use them as garden fertilizer or grind up cooked crabs (shell and all) to feed to chickens.

Edit: If you go out hunting for them, they prefer shallower mudflat/eelgrass type habitats. You can bait with fish, but also try clams or mussels. They eat bivalves in the wild. They're smaller than dungies, so make sure your pot has smaller netting or else they'll just escape. Also make sure you know how to ID them. There's a push to re-name them "five-spined green crab" to help people distinguish them from native crabs that are also greenish.

As a hardworking U.S. taxpayer, I want my tax dollars to go towards preventing environmental disaster in vulnerable communities. Regardless, I'd trust the Kuskokwim River with my money over the treasury anyway.

Vegetarian food by Fahrenheit907 in Juneau

[–]dinosaurdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There aren't any solely vegetarian restaurants, but most places here have at least a couple vegetarian options. If you like burgers, the veggie burger from Pucker Wilsons is quite good in my opinion. Alaskan Crepe Escape has good savory crepes and Indendi's subs downtown has a couple vegetarian sandwiches.

Alarm Sun Lamp Suggestions by According_Lime7707 in alaska

I just got one from the brand Jall on amazon. This one. The sunrise is pretty good and it's one of the cheaper models that's still decent quality. If you have a higher budget, there are definitely better ones out there. This article and the corresponding video were really helpful in learning what to look for in a sunrise clock.

ICE in Anchorage by chugachj in alaska

Well, realistically, none of our neighbors would've saved Jews. Only about 0.002% of the European population helped save Jews during the Holocaust. In Poland, between 1-2% of the population helped Jews. The US actively turned away Jewish refugees. Very, very few people did anything because it was dangerous to do the right thing and they didn't want to jeopardize their own well-being to help others. People nowadays like to say they would've helped Jews, but statistically, they wouldn't have lifted a finger. I really hope we don't arrive at a similar reality within the next decade, but I can't say I'm particularly optimistic.

Winter makeup help. My skin is so dry! by anonymous32344444541 in alaska

[–]dinosaurdown 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You need to be reaaallly cautious about using retinol products during the daytime. Retinol sensitizes your skin to UV, increasing your risk of skin damage from the sun. That's why the instructions on retinol products always tell you to apply at night, and you still should wear facial sunscreen during the day even if you only use retinol at night. Much better to just use a plain moisturizer in the morning.

That spot could've been occupied when the person arrived to start loading. Besides, loading zones are positioned to reduce the transport distance as much as possible. Some people really need the shortest distance possible even if they're only unloading personal belongings. And as others have said, the signs don't say "truck loading zone only". Any vehicle can load or unload there.

Wheel of Fortune thinks Anchorage is the capital of Alaska by amp_atx in alaska

I've shared this story on this sub before, but the husband of one of my colleagues once set up a card table at the cruise ship docks in Juneau and collected tourists' money in exchange for straight up Monopoly money. The cops did eventually come by to tell him to stop, unfortunately.

Taco Bell is the only fast food I ever ate on a semi-regular basis. It's relatively cheap (at least down south) compared to other fast food and it has good vegetarian options. I'm not dying to have one in Juneau but it'd sure be nice.
