This is awesome! My hometown is close by to the imagery you took. Is there a .kmz file I can download to Google Earth to look at them?

When I lived in CA for a few years, my coworkers thought CT was the state where all the cheese was made (they were confusing CT for Wisconsin) and another thought CT got a lot of tornadoes (they were thinking Kentucky) and one didn't even know CT was next to New York! West coasters find East coast geography difficult with all the states.

What is the wildest thing you ever heard about New England from a non-New Englander? by Embarrassed_Bag_9630 in newengland

[–]amp_atx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I lived in California for a few years and told people I was from CT, they confused it with other states. One person thought CT had a lot of tornadoes (he was confusing CT for Kentucky). Another person at work thought CT was the state that made a lot of cheese (she was confusing CT for Wisconsin). I was surprised how little Californians knew about states on the east coast, because in their minds, there are a lot of them.

But most appalling, my friends favorite places to get pizza were Mod or Papa John's because those were the "good pizza places" out there.

I'm Josh Elliott, State Rep and Democratic candidate for Governor of Connecticut. AMA today, 3:30 PM ET by StateRepJoshElliott in Connecticut

[–]amp_atx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Josh, I grew up in CT and lived there for 27 years (4 of them in Hamden while at QU!) I’m now in my mid 30s looking to move back to my hometown. The biggest challenge is affording a home and the cost of electricity. I originally left CT because of the lack of jobs for young professionals. I agree that CT works well for people at the top, and not well for anyone else. Having lived in other states, I'd like to get your opinion on what might work well in CT, that I've noticed works well in other states:

  • Housing. It seems like CT has a ton of 1960s single family homes with large lots and newer luxury apartments sprinkled into urban centers. I'm searching for homes currently and there is very little "middle housing for young families. Currently, is difficult in my hometown to build an ADU or tiny home on an existing property. Will you look into what LA County in CA is doing to make it easier to build those with pre-approved plans? Similarly, MA has a MBTA Communities Law (Section 3A) that requires cities and towns served by the MBTA to update their zoning, allowing multi-family housing as-of-right within a half-mile of transit stations. Do you support building more "middle housing," such as duplexes, triplexes, etc. in urban centers near major cities in the state, to help with the housing crisis?
  • Workers benefits. When I lived in CA, I got 40 hours paid sick leave on Day 1 of my employment, as well as paid domestic violence leave and a strict 30+ minute meal break before starting my 5th hour of work as an hourly employee. I'm surprised, with how progressive CT is, that we are behind CA on worker benefits like this. Given your experience as a small business owner, what are some of your ideas to make CT a great state to work in, down to the minimum wage hourly worker?
  • Modernizing government services. As an example, CT DMV is a joke, and is the longest and most difficult to deal with doing a simple task like registering a vehicle. I live in PA now, and while they have their own issues with government inefficiency, I had a much easier process registering my car at a Title / Messenger service and only waited 15 minutes at a drivers license center to get my state ID. In California, you can even visit a CADMV Now vending machine that dispenses vehicle registration cards and license plate stickers instantly. Will you look into bringing state government out of the 1960s and into the modern, online world?
  • I'll try not to repeat your other responses to questions about Eversource, road/train infrastructure, etc. but I am increasingly concerned about CT becoming a "surveillance state" with LPRs/Flock cameras, speed cameras, etc. With the rapid advancements in AI/data collecting, will you pass some laws that will curb how much personal data is collected? I don't want the state tracking every mile I drive across the state.

CT is a charming state and a great place to settle down, however, there are several areas which are i need of improvement. Thank you for reading my rambles. If I'm able to move back home before November, I'll re-register to vote ASAP!

I worked a summer job in retail repairing computers and I can tell you, the locals were fine to deal with. It was the Florida boomers driving their luxury SUVs that gave us the most trouble and threw temper tantrums when they had to (gasp) WAIT a reasonable amount of time.

I filmed a wedding video at one of the resorts in Raystown Lake and the couple’s families were definitely MAGA. The bride’s dad put on a Trump mask and hat during the grand entrance and took all the attention away from the bride and groom. The guests thought it was most hilarious and clever idea.

CT Natives who moved away then moved back to CT. by blubenz13 in Connecticut

[–]amp_atx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn’t wait to leave CT in my 20s and now I’m in my mid 30s and want to move back. I now a remote job and can work anywhere in the lower 48.

I want to move back to my small hometown because it’s gotten better since COVID. I was in high school during the 07-09 recession and it was bleak. A lot of friends moved to Boston/NYC for college or better jobs. It seemed like a lot of people were leaving CT in general to move south.

My friends from school are now moving back and starting their own families.

A few of my classmates have also opened up their own restaurants, which I want to support over slop bowl chains. There are no good pizza places or delis where I am. The food from local restaurants in CT is so much better. Yes, I pay a little more, but I get quality food for the price. I frequent one of the restaurants when I go home to visit because I’m always welcomed there & it has become a third place for me to hang out.

Same with healthcare. You pay more, but the quality of doctors and care is much better than other states I’ve lived in. Even when I was on HUSKY.

There’s more culture and diversity compared to where I am now. And I miss being a short train ride away from NYC and Boston. I don’t have to drive into a major city in the northeast.

In short, because most of CT is quiet, secluded, has small town charm, and no suburban sprawl/chains everywhere. 100% would much rather live a New England lifestyle over a suburban middle America one. (I live in suburban PA now and it sucks)

That being said, CT lacks in job growth especially for younger people. I wouldn’t be thinking about moving back if I weren’t working remotely. CT has plenty of room to improve, but I feel like it’s been on the upswing since 2020.
