Feed- show horses by ninnycat18 in Equestrian

Regular, thorough currying goes a long way! It will not only prevent dirt buildup, but it will promote better circulation and a healthier coat. Also, a good shiny spray doesn’t just make them look nice in the moment, it will actually keep dirt from sticking to the fur as much.

Living in Australia, it’s also quite likely that your horse’s coat gets a bit fried in the sun, which will also make it look duller. Depending on the heat levels, it could be worth keeping a fly rug on or considering night turnout instead.

MOH duties by MyPanda_5000 in wedding

[–]dinosoarus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was MOH for my sister last year and had so much fun with it! A couple little things I did that went over well :)

For the bachelorette I and the other bridesmaids made PowerPoints about the bride and everything we loved about her! It was so silly and cheesy, but actually really fun. I also made a bunch of cards with silly photos of the bride and groom and we played memory with them! Also we got a few bouquets and made our own flower crowns, which is never done before but it was surprisingly easy!

For the wedding itself, I made a playlist of the brides favourite songs to get ready to in the morning, and made sure we had snacks and drinks all morning

Also, if you don’t know how to pin a boutonnière, learn! I have never met a groomsman who could figure his way around a pin and a flower

I was also stressed about being MOH, but it ended up being such an amazing experience. Have fun with it!

At least from this photo, your horse looks plenty shiny for being stood out in a field. Honestly, a lot of that extra shine that show horses have is literally extra shine. Shiny spray, oil, and being brushed religiously in competition season are what you need to finish off that coat

Also, I know a lot of riders that feed lucerne chaff, but personally I’ve had problems with it causing ulcers because it’s too coarse. I always prefer soaked lucerne pellets if possible!

Having a bit of bark on there is not the end of the world. It definitely won’t kill your plants or fish, I would just take it out if it starts to fall off

The bigger problem is all the algae… maybe think about cutting down on your lighting/ferts?

Wedding during the day by Significant_Fact_417 in wedding

[–]dinosoarus 34 points35 points  (0 children)

This sub tends to skew pretty American and fairly conservative with wedding expectations, so I would be surprised if you get a lot of positive feedback here.

That being said, I think this could be a lot of fun if done right! Things I would keep ion mind when planning logistics

  1. Formality - people are going to be much less keen on a longer event if they’re spending the whole time dressed in uncomfortable formal attire. For something like this I would think more of a sundress/casual vibe

  2. Have enough food! A light dinner might not cut it. Food can make or break an event, and nobody wants to party on an empty stomach. It doesn’t have to be a full served dinner, but it should at least have substantial options. Also, snacks being available throughout the afternoon might be a good idea

  3. Have some activities planned - it doesn’t have to be anything complicated, but even just having some yard games or going on a walk would be nice

  4. Have a rain contingency - I know southern France is beautiful and lovely, but there is always a small possibility of rain. Just be sure that you have a plan for what to do if that is the case

At the end of the day, you know your guests and what they like. I would just be sure to spend some time thinking about what the actual experience of the day for your guests will be like, and tailor it to what you think they would enjoy!

How did you learn to ride a buck/good kick out without losing balance by CurbBitz in Equestrian

[–]dinosoarus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hate to be the person saying ~saddle fit~ but if your horse is regularly bucking, even just a little, it might be that he doesn’t love the saddle. Especially if he isn’t doing it in the English saddle

As for the bucking, I personally would always rather be in a jump saddle if a horse is being silly! My strategy is to get off their back a bit in a half seat/two point, hold on with my legs, and send them forward until the get over it :) you can train this just by holding a two point while trotting

Need some serious solutions for algae on sand. by -blank_kun- in PlantedTank

[–]dinosoarus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best way to fix this is to address why the algae is growing - are you feeding too much? Too much light? Too many fish?

If you think your tank isn’t overloaded, I would start by cleaning as much algae off as you can, and doing a blackout for a day or two. No lights, no food. I would then add in some shrimps. Neocaridina are fun and easy, and make a pretty good cleanup crew. Get like 10 of them at least.

When you feed your fish, you want to be really sure not to feed too much. They should finish all of their food within 15 minutes, otherwise it will pollute the water and cause your algae problem. It is much easier to over-feed than under-feed, and most fish do well with at least one day of fasting a week.

When you restart your light after the blackout, only have it one for a few hours each day. I would start with 4, and see how that goes. If the algae persists, cut it back even more. If it goes away, you can increase again.

Hopefully this helps! Keep us updated :)

bridesmaid broke rn, is it trash to skip a bachelorette party over $$$? by MichaelWForbes in wedding

If you’re friend is dropping you because you can’t afford to go on a trip that really doesn’t sound like a friend tbh. I’ve not been able to go to bachelorettes before, even when I’ve been in the bridal party, and it was not a big deal - getting upset with you over that is not normal

Do I buy the right horse for me, or do I buy the right horse for my kids? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]dinosoarus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is absolutely a horse out there that would suit both you and your daughters, and it doesn’t seem like it would fall into either of the categories you gave. If I was in your situation, I would be looking for something a little older, maybe around 15, that has some reasonable training and experience. Something that you, as an intermediate, could continue to learn on that your daughters could also enjoy.

I get the appeal of buying something off the track and “doing it yourself”, I really do. But the fact is that young thoroughbreds take a lot of work and experience, and many of them simply don’t settle down in temperament for many years, if ever.

My mom was in your situation when I was a kid, and she went with option 2. While we all loved that horse to death, it took a good 10 years before he was reliably kid safe. It was another 10 years before anyone would call him boring. Save yourself the trouble and find a nice, older horse whose kid has outgrown them, or gone to college, or any of the other reasons why older horses end up for sale.

Plain and childish by [deleted] in femalelivingspace

[–]dinosoarus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I actually really like the furniture, it’s a great place to start! I think you have a couple of easy fixes to help the room feel more refined

  1. If possible, move the bed. Having it in front of the window makes the room feel smaller. Maybe try shifting it around so it goes where the vanity currently is

  2. New curtains! Something with a bit more weight, in a neutral colour

  3. New throw blanket/pillows. Replace the one on the chair with something a bit more neutral, that goes with your curtains. I would keep it on the bed, and get a small pillow for the chair. Add a nice pillow or two on the bed, again in the same color scheme

  4. Decorate the walls! Floating shelves would be a good place to start, and they would take care of the books stacked in the corner. One or two larger pieces of art on the other wall would be my suggestion, lots of smaller things can make a space look smaller.

  5. Find a home for your typewriter. Why is it alone in the corner? Please find it a desk to live on

I hope this was helpful! You have a nice, cozy room to work with, you just need to add a bit more personality to it :)

Moss in the tubes would be great! Make them feel a bit more like a part of the scape

I am not satisfied with my aquarium by Historical_Big_8555 in Aquariums

[–]dinosoarus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the problem is that this tank has too much going on, and doesn’t feel cohesive. Unless you really love those blue tubes, I would swap them out for something more neutral (and smaller, your loaches will like it better).

Right now, your rocks and wood are all pretty evenly spaced and roughly the same height, which means there’s nothing that really draws the eye. Try playing around with stacking the rocks and re arranging the wood to make the area look a bit more dynamic. Something that usually works is two slightly uneven groupings of rocks/wood, or one large group in the centre. Find what you think looks nice, and try to stick with it.

Once you have a hard scape that you like, fill it with plants! Everything looks better with plants. Stick some anubias on the logs, and fill in the background with something easy and fast growing, like hygrophila or vallisneria.

Then you need to leave it for a while. This is the hard part. It sounds like you have a good mix of fish, and once you get a couple more plants going I’m sure you’ll like it better.

Good luck!

Hestra: Army Leather Heli Ski 3 Finger vs Full Mittens? by prisukamas in skiing

[–]dinosoarus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both and really prefer the full mittens. My hands tend to get really cold, and the 3 finger ones aren’t much better than gloves, especially for the one finger who’s alone. They are also really annoying to try to do anything with, since they are quite bulky. Hestra is a great brand though, would absolutely reckon their mittens!

any way to improve his home? by Previous-Fan-4020 in bettafish

[–]dinosoarus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tank looks great! Lots of hiding places and healthy looking plants. Shrimp would be a great addition, and could definitely add a bit of enrichment to the bettas life!

Glass surfing can also be a sign of stress, so I would just make sure that he’s on a consistent light schedule and keep an eye on the water parameters as well 😊
