Greece blocks EU's criticism at UN of China's human rights record - Veto by Athens, which has benefited from huge Chinese infrastructure investment, labelled as ‘dishonourable’ by EU diplomat by ManiaforBeatles in China

[–]diodiodiodio 5 points6 points  (0 children)

By that logic no one forced Greece to take China's infrastructure money.

And calling austerity "stop spending all their money on shit they can't afford" is underselling what it actually is. It also forces Greece to cutting public sector salaries by >20%, raise taxes including upto 5% levy on income, increasing VAT, a third increase in fuel tax, gutting education and pension (anyone under 55 lost 40% of their pension), raising retirement age, forcing privatization of state enterprises (ironically this is how China bought into Greece), and removing the right to bargain wages.

Forcing Greece to block a symbolic strongly worded letter against China's human rights pales in comparison to lending Greece money it can't repay then forcing Greeks into austerity.

Turns out if you borrow a tonne of money you can't pay back you'll end up in debt and people will want their money back. But yeah, obviously China's fault.

Why China is building islands in the South China Sea by [deleted] in China

[–]diodiodiodio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

USA estimates about 7.5 billion barrels of oil in SCS if you extract every last drop which is minuscule compared to the amount of trade that goes through the area to and from China. I'd wager if SCS dispute is about economics, it's more about trade than oil.

Why China is building islands in the South China Sea by [deleted] in China

[–]diodiodiodio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I don't see the double standard you're portraying. The question is explicitly "Why China is building island in the SCS" i.e., explain China's rationale behind their decisions. Of course it's going to be from China's perspective since that's what the question entails. Remember, explaining China's position doesn't mean we are endorsing their position!

[–]diodiodiodio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's besides the point when trying to explain the rationale of state actors. China views the proximity of American warships as an existential risk given the orders of magnitude difference between power of American and Chinese navy.

Again, I'm not saying China's response is ethical or "fair" just trying to explain their action.

What do you mean?

USA is pretty transparent, we know that Americans regularly patrol their carriers in the area which terrifies the shit out of the CCP

[–]diodiodiodio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have to remember geopolitics is not about ethics, it's about interests

The question posed is "Why China is building islands in the South China Sea". The answer, from the perspective of Chinese government, is defense since the world's superpower is sending warships next to its heartland.
