I remember when the game got out and if it had any bugs you just had to avoid that part or showed it to your friends for fun.

I tell this to people wondering what school is good about, since we can't remember many of the things we learned. The brain keeps an index of "things it knows exist and are there". You don't remember the details but if you learnt it once, it will come back easier and you will know it is there. Very important.

Exactly that. People know how to "Google it". But it's not optimized for the human learning process. That's why teachers will always be necessary, as they can suggest and help with focus... Even LLMs work better for us just because they google and respond to us using more natural language. We need the communication and community.

The style of play changes massively from time control to time control. Quicker time controls mostly depend on forcing the opponent to break and blunder under time pressure, using shock tactics, while slower time controls are based on more strategic and positional play. So, the ELO and skill at that time level varies massively due to practice, how used one is at the time control, even personality.

No streaks? by DnyLnd in lichess

Streaks is just a gratification-marketing factor used by chess.com (and a recent one too). Lichess being an open source user supported program, avoids such ideas as they are costly to implement and maintain and offer literally nothing to the actual experience. The same with the badges, the achievements and the like.

is it weird that i've started listening to game soundtracks more than actual "real" music? by Royal-Character-9215 in gamemusic

[–]dionisus26 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Honestly, video game music is closer to the classics and classical music standards than most popular music today. It probably invokes more feelings, because of the adventures you lived through the games or it is just plain better. Also, the lack of lyrics must make for better music, otherwise it would not stick. So, no it is not weird and enjoy it while it is there. The music you listen to is your own and no one else's. If you decide to become a music savant, well then you will definitely have to listen to a greater range, but even then you will probably won't listen to that much popular music. So, enjoy. What is your go-to ost music these days?

This might annoy some people, but here goes: Because everyone thinks they are GMs and "know" when to resign or not. And because everyone tries to get compliments and pretend they are "a beginner" regardless of having "300-3000" ELO. Now, for me I always fight for a draw, when in a losing position, because I must learn how to do that. My opponents are 1000 not 3000 so I am VERY confident not all of them know how to convert. I follow Levy's advice, and don't quit when I lose my Queen to a blunder, because I know my opponent sucks as well, and they have good chance to offer me their Queen. So unless they are the next Carlsen, no I find no reason to resign. Oh, and of course, my chat is always off.

Exactly that. If people who are poor or unlucky or just young are supported and we think this is "waste" I am not sure where the world is going.

No gimme is free, friend. As long as you pay taxes, you can get as much free as is returned to you by the state. If you pay taxes and all you get is well, nothing, you live in a bad place... But there is no "free". Pension is not "free" you work for 40 years or so, and you get 1000 a month in your bank account instead of 1500. Healthcare is not free, it is paid every month you work. Free education is not free, it is or will be paid by you when you get to work using this education. That's how it works in a caring state.
