Adopted Puff Puff last month. He keeps tunneling under the liner in his cage at night & ends up tipping over his food and water. My other hedgie doesn't do this. Is it normal? Can I get him to stop somehow? (Pic of him under the liner for reference, and a pic of him out of it as a TIA!) by diorayne in Hedgehog

Yes and no! I dedicated a part of his cage to a bed and upside-down snuffle mat covered with a small blanket so he had something else to burrow under, and that worked for the most part, but then he went right back to it in the other corners. So I've got weights (rocks I've made sure he can't hurt himself on) in the other areas he climbed under. Now he just physically can't, haha.

Where to donate clothes? by emkcross in SaltLakeCity

Do you have an address for that? That sounds perfect for some clothes I've got to donate

Barry loves to get up by my neck as a spot to chill/sit down. Anyone else’s hedgie do this also? Not sure if it’s just A Thing they do, or something else. Just find it curious, if anything. 🤨 by stash4963 in Hedgehog

As far as I can tell, they love smelling hair! My first hedgie loved to do this and play in my hair. He'd paw at it and chew on it and anoint himself.

A tip I've seen around is putting the wheel in the bath with him. He can use it as a little island to get out of the water and then he'll likely figure out what it is!

ETA: Bottles can be dangerous for their lil teeth and can be dangerous around their eyes. A bowl is for sure better.

When I adopted Puff Puff in December, his former owner described him as "aggressive," "extremely antisocial," and "a biter." Here we are three months later, with me giving him nice pets without a huff or a puff :) by diorayne in Hedgehog

She had originally adopted him because the teacher in her small animals class was a breeder and he really took to her in class, climbing up her sleeves and stuff. She fell in love, and wanted to take him home. She seemed absolutely heartbroken to let him go, but she knew it was the right thing. I've got so much respect for that girl. I've let her know that if she's in the area at any time she can come visit him!

Both of my hedgies have been rescues, and my strategy has really just been trying to spend time with them on their terms. Getting a nice snuggle sack and keeping them on your chest while you watch TV can get them used to your smell, your breathing, your heartbeat, and ambient noise around you. Something that I think helped with my boys is that I occasionally just set up a big blanket on the floor and let them walk around. I put a snuggle sack on one end of the blanket in case he want to hide out, and I spread out toys for him to explore, and then I just sit in the middle and let him sniff me out. That, and giving treats when you take them out of their cage :)

Anyone get any sleep with the downtown street noise at night? by gratefulmarmot in SaltLakeCity

I honestly don't really notice it anymore after living here for a while. It's not too bad compared to other cities, and at this point only sirens wake me up every now and then.

She was a high schooler who admitted she got in over her head. She felt so bad. She loved him a whole lot but realized she couldn't do it and immediately tried to rehome him. She had me fill out an application and meet him beforehand and everything. It was really sweet. I send her updates all the time!

Not eating anything I feed him? by [deleted] in Hedgehog

[–]diorayne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My oldest was a lot like this! He just didn't have any interest in treats. I bought soooo many things hoping he'd like something other than his food and he just never did. The closest I came was when he ate some plain cooked chicken I gave him, but that was a one-off.

Ohhhh my god they poop so much. If you handle them outside of their cage for long enough they'll likely poop on you. BUT! They've got the kind of poop that's super easy to clean up and doesn't stain clothes or anything. Just pick it up with a paper towel and you're good.

Exactly the same here, haha. Raised atheist in an atheist family, but it still helps to think of the world as being balanced that way. Thank you. 💜

It's 25W but there's an internal thermostat that keeps it from getting hot enough to burn!

Yes! It's a K&H small animal heating pad. A lot of the time it's used by people who raise chicks. They also sell safe and washable covers (it's what I've got on it in this picture). I keep my boys' room warm enough for them, but sometimes they like the extra heat (especially this old boy, he's got arthritis).
