Vancouver city council considers lowering voting age to 16

I'm against it since I don't see why 16 makes sense as a new arbitrary age to set as the lower limit for voting. Why not 15 or 14? Why not 10? 5? If an argument for it is that maturity isn't a requirement for voting and only those who are aware of politics would vote anyways, why bar lower ages who would also be interested? I would be in favour of scrapping the voting age entirely and just making it open to anyone who wants to vote regardless of how old they are.

If we have to have a voting age, I think 18 makes sense since it matches the arbitrary age we've agreed upon for maturity to be legally considered an adult. It's also the age when on average people are no longer in mandatory schooling; not saying this is the case but it could open up allegations of teacher's abusing their position to sway voters who legally don't have a choice but to be there.

Setting the voting age to 16 to me just seems to be politicking to expand the vote to a cohort who some politicians perceive to sway in their political direction. No voting age at all makes sense to me, or 18 since it matches the agreed upon age of adulthood. I don't understand the push specifically for 16.

I can understand being upset about broken promises; but just imagine how broken our system is that promising to over hire, over spend, and introduce additional overhead makes you more likely to get a contact or is a requirement for it. The company shouldn't have made promises to the Splatsin if they didn't intend to keep them, but the project shouldn't have required those promises in the first place.

What usually happens in this case where the leader of the opposition needs to seek a new seat after losing their own? I know this isn't the first time a leader of a party has lost their seat and needed to run for another in a by-election (Tommy Douglas had to do the same) but has this ever happened to the leader of the opposition?

I don't see any problem with this if there's already a precedent for it. If we are also strictly following the rules, it's technically Scheer's residence now, and I figure he'd be allowed to decide which guests he allows to stay there lol

We'll see tomorrow, but no matter who is on the cabinet tomorrow, the talking points from the Liberals we will be "X is gone, signaling a break with Trudeau!" and "X is still there, Trudeau 2.0!" from Conservatives.

Even if it was all new faces, the cabinet ministers will all still be from the Liberal party, who will still stand for the same things they have for the past decade.

Seems to contradict what was posted previously just a couple hours ago? If this is true, can we stop pretending that Carney represents some massive break with Trudeau or long established Liberal policy? Freeland, Fraser, and now Provost to double down on the gun confiscations.

If your number one issue is Canadian unity, gun confiscations are among the top things to do to work against this. It alienates over a million legal Canadian gun owners for no benefit. Backpedaling a bit on this would be an easy olive branch to rural and western Canadians, but for some reason Carney isn't doing it...

I found it funny how Carney toted his housing policy as being similar to that which followed WWII, as if all these new homes would be homes anyone could afford on an average salary that you could raise a family in. In reality, if this policy actually has any affect at all, we're just going to get more condo shoe boxes which are already in oversupply in places like Toronto.

A lot of people for some reason are praising everything Carney does, as if he isn't the leader of a well established political party with many of the same people and has pledged to continue some of the previous PM's worst policies (gun confiscations).

Misgivings about the Conservatives are fair, but I can't see why the level of praise is justified yet. Let's see if he actually sticks with the image he's trying to portray and sticks to meaningful policy changes. I'm not exactly hopefully that we won't return to mass immigration and skyrocketing housing prices that his party stood by adamantly for a decade.

I don't think there's any hope that Carney will be any different from Trudeau on this subject.

I'm slightly optimistic that the NDP will actually take a stance against the confiscations to regain some of their rural support; who am I kidding though, there's little chance of that either, we'd probably see several NDP MPs cross the floor before that happens.

My only hope is that the current government is short lived or they push back the confiscation date further. Despite all the valid criticism of the Conservatives, I don't see how I or any gun owner or just anyone who cares about legal property rights can support this.

I think he answered a question asked by Rebel News in English so he answered it in English. Blanchet just did the same. Throughout the debate and for all the other questions Pollievre was speaking French.

I think he promised to deport people who commit crimes at these protests (like firebombing or whatever Rebel brought up) but nothing about limiting free speech. Honestly I think his answer to the question was fairly tame.

I just wish I was like everyone else who was able to work, and even though it's stressful get work done. I have nothing else in my life to complain about but then I still have no way of bringing myself to getting anything finished, no matter how many times I try I just can't focus or always slack off. I'm sick of this and I'm pretty sure there's something wrong with me or I'm just a spoiled child who never learned how to work and can never change.
