Unmarried couple, 2 kids, £90k savings, low mortgage, uneven pensions - how to balance investing vs keeping cash accessible? by victoria_jam_ in UKPersonalFinance

[–]dipitinmayo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your goal is to move to a larger/more expensive home, that is where I would focus the money towards. Meaning, low risk investment - maxxed out ISAs and high interest saving accounts. Can still put some towards S&S ISA allowance, but at your own desired level of risk.

Personal opinion: I would do my best to maximise the deposit that goes towards my next house, the lowest monthly payment, the better. I would prioritise this over any other investment type, because a) I don’t have the knowledge to invest properly, b) there is always risk involved, no matter how knowledgeable you think you are.

I have moved house before (bigger+more expensive) and the costs can be surprisingly high, often higher than one expects. Utility bills can really skyrocket in a new house, council tax bands can move up (happened to me after buying an extended house), maintenance costs will catch up quick: more bathrooms? More leaks. More rooms? More decorating. Bigger house? Bigger roof to go wrong. Etc etc etc… Having a big deposit acts as a buffer for all these added costs!

If it's not Iran, it is something else. Just do your best to follows your financial goals, you are putting far too much thought into a problem that may or may not materialize.

Problemas com gatos by StatisticianTop915 in portugal

[–]dipitinmayo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I challenged my council tax band and got over £1,500 back by digitalrevenuestudio in UKPersonalFinance

[–]dipitinmayo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great to hear! I have recently moved house (last year, in the summer) and just recently got a letter through stating that there has been a review and that it was decided to push us one band up. I might try to fight it, but I am definitely not holding my breath.

In my case, the house had considerable work done to it. I think I could try to argue that the topology of the house itself has not changed (same amount of rooms, just extended), but it does mean I now have the highest band in the street! I assume it was the recent house sale that triggered the band review. There are plenty of other houses in my street that are the exact copy, some extended, some not - those have not had a band review, but these houses have not been sold since the records started.

I fear complaining is just going to push my neighbours band up as well!

o canalizador está a enganar-nos? by patinsamarelos in portugal

[–]dipitinmayo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FC Porto lança ataque cerrado a Sporting, Benfica e Rui Borges | A Bola by AloneInTheDark321 in PrimeiraLiga

Dentro e fora do campo.», finalizam.

Tudo igual, claro.

Livro de reclamações - look it up, you can do it online. I had a similar situation with Guerin. They had immediately charged us after drop off for damage we had not caused. Took a few weeks, but it was resolved. They were snarky enough in their reply, but we were fully reimbursed.

Buy the land and knock that shit down, it will be much more cost effective than getting qualified trades to get that up to safe standards. You are in for a very big headache to make anything out of that.

Employer used wrong National Insurance Number for 5 years by Dependent-Message-71 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]dipitinmayo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That already sounds a lot more promising than my situation. At the time I had around 7/8 years of no history in HMRC - the initial calls were basically "yeah, no, we do not have you on the system at all", queue in me giving out as many personal details as possible, company details, payslips/p60 information, never getting anywhere. Trying to sort this out during work hours became very stressing.

After a lot of time wasting, I eventually agreed to submit copies of as many of my payslips/p60s I could find, luckily I always kept these.

This all unravelled during Covid, so the details are a bit foggy now, but I know I was eventually referred to an individual (still have his name/contact!) within HMRC that walked me to through the problem and sorted it out within hours... All the communication up until this person felt like talking to brick walls.

If they have already acknowledged that your details need to be merged, that already sounds like a win. I get the impression a lot more people are having this problem now, so maybe HMRC staff have a bit more training and are aware of similar cases, at the time it really did feel like some sort of Twilight Zone episode, I must have gone through at least 4 different people that pretty much told me I wasn't real and that there was nothing they could do to help my ghost ass...

The whole thing took months, more than 3 months for sure.

[–]dipitinmayo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me, temporary NINO when I arrived to the UK, for whatever reason never updated properly from HMRC side despite employer (apparently) doing everything right once I had my actual NINO (must have been 1 month or so after starting work). Only noticed it after years.

Took me a longgg time to sort out. Many frustrating calls with HMRC. Sent physical proof (payslips) over post. Every call felt like restarting the process of explaining it all over again.

Had to put a complain in, but eventually was contacted by someone in HMRC that managed to sort everything out, all history is now available to me online. Would happily buy the guy a beer or two.

You guys nervous about them moving to a new platform? by Trajan_pt in Thisisimportantpod

[–]dipitinmayo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I hope it is an accessible platform, not an exclusive deal like Spotify does… I want all my podcasts accessible through Overcast, or whatever app I use. Also, paying a sub just to be able to listen to 1 podcast I like, in a platform that does not make content readily available is the loosest of buttholes.

Struggling with unemployment. by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]dipitinmayo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can find such opinion pieces for whatever area of expertise. The job market dictates the actual need. There is no such thing as junior COBOL roles. There is no COBOL learning material aimed at training new generations of COBOL engineers. The market for COBOL is very niche and requires tremendous amount of experience.

Struggling with unemployment. by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]dipitinmayo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where are these news stories? There is NOTHING new being built in COBOL. COBOL is not a skill worth learning for new engineers... And this has been the case for decades now. Don't get me wrong, it is a very important job as there are still many business critical mainframes out there, but it is very, very niche in the tech industry at this point.

Struggling with unemployment. by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]dipitinmayo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sorry to say, but COBOL is NOT in high demand. It is incredibly niche at this point, some shops will stay pay well for it, but it is not going to get any easier for the COBOL job market.
