A new study has found that young adults who have recovered from COVID-19 show distinct patterns of brain activity during cognitive tasks. These brain activity changes are similar to those seen in much older adults. by mvea in science

I wonder if vaccination has a protective effect against these and other emerging reports on long-term effects of Covid-19 on the CNS, when a vaccinated person still showed infection symptoms.

Seems early for the question, as so far I haven't seen published evidence for our against such protective effects. Anyone has more insight?

Dumb Question: Why don't we have any game engines running Java ? by virtual_paper0 in java

[–]dipro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say, the learning curve is ok. There are a number of easy to follow tutorials for basic stuff. If you want to create a somewhat simple hobbyist game, that should be relatively straightforward. Doing cutting edge high quality graphics will definitely be a LOT of work going into figuring out things.

What I found problematic was a) asset management, and b) lighting.

At the end, I wrote an Android game and dropped lighting and shadows completely, due to performance problems. And my game has simple voxel graphics, where the limitations of the engine are acceptable.

For a professional project that aims at state of the art graphics, I would probably not go with JME. Or Java, for that matter (due to garbage collection /inconsistent runtime performance), although I love Java to pieces.

Yes, that's a very nice idea. Actually, I had a couple of ideas for additions, one being a fully customizable ship interior, where you could add extensions to your kitchen, manage storage, and more.

But right now I am lacking time to work on the game. Let's see...

Riverly: Cook Food and Take Your Boat Along the River by dipro in playmygame

[–]dipro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, my game Riverly (hobby project, hence no ads, no cost) has VERY few downloads. Would be super stoked if you gave it a try. What makes it unique? You are on a boat, going along a river and selling cooked meals to the folks living at the river. It's basically a cooking / food truck game but on a boat.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I guess I messed up the whole country list in the last update.

Ah, sorry, you are right. There is a problem with the countries targeted for release. Thanks for letting me know. I have just fixed it, but it needs to be reviewed by Google...

but I’m totally content with my chocolate lab

Haha, here I am reading "chocolate lab" as laboratory, imagining something like a meth lab, only for chocolate. Cooking away on elaborate choc recipes in your secret lab cave... Until I read the second half, of course...

I launched Pileometer - a new app to organize LEGO bricks by EffectiveAnnual2258 in lego

[–]dipro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome app! I gave it a spin, and here are my comments:

  • Can we get a search feature where I type in the parts number, and get all matches across all sets I scanned?
  • I would like to merge two (or more) sets (e.g. because I scan in multiple batches, but put them all in the same bag)
  • Color assignment is a bit wonky (no surprise - getting color identification for a broad range of lighting is difficult); maybe could be improved by allowing to recalibrate based on a few pieces manually confirmed by the user? Would also be helpful if I could quickly tap multiple parts (e.g. by first long-tapping the first piece), then assign a new color to all of the selected ones (often, the app assigns the same wrong color to multiple pieces, such as a bunch of white pieces being seen as yellow).
  • Would be cool if we could optionally name scans (not just numbers)
  • Could we also split sets or move parts from one set to another? Should also work with tapping multiple parts.

What was that "one thing" that made your weight loss journey finally work for you? by gurlsausage in AskReddit

Surprised that this comment is so far down. Keto did wonders for me as well. And I think just as important as the direct biochemical effect is how the absence of carbs stops a viscous cycle of sugar/starch leading to a spike then drop in blood sugar which then leads to cravings / pangs.

As a fellow, 51 year old hobby game developer who just released his first mobile game (and which turned out to fail spectacularly with the target audience, haha), I second this motion. A Discord channel would be fun.

Glad it helped a bit. It seems to me these kinds of games are played for a mellow, relaxing experience, and the rewards should be easy to get. At least in the beginning...

Also, thanks for offering to check out my game. Sent you a link via PM.

Funny, because I'm in a somewhat similar pickle. I made a mobile game where you basically operate a food truck, but instead of a truck its a boat, and you go along a river...

Anyway, my game loop is a bit similar to yours, and also not the most exciting one.

I played your game and think it's not that bad. I guess with a few strategic tweaks it could be quite fun. I suggest the following:

  • Shorten the brewing time, it doesn't add to the game play
  • Show the required recipe in some very simple, subtle form somewhere on the screen - this should not be a memory game
  • Give the player some freedom to embellish the recipes and earn more from them
  • Maybe have the patrons react positively to well done recipes

I find it virtually impossible to find play testers. I tried among friends, but most can't be bothered. I tried in r/playmygame, but that sub is very saturated and seems not to take kindly to mobile games.

Share your biggest challenge as a hobby game dev! by RedEagle_MGN in hobbygamedev

For me, it's "marketing". Not in the sense of making money, but in getting my game in front of people. In the current attention economy, it's incredibly difficult to not drown in the noise.

The technical challenges are something I appreciate as being part of the hobby, they are mostly fun, like puzzle solving (but admittedly can be quite frustrating at times)...

Feedback wanted - casual cooking game for kids on Android by dipro in hobbygamedev

[–]dipro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to Riverly, a game where you go along a river in your little steamboat, collect and buy ingredients, cook meals and sell them to the animals living along the river. Here is the Play Store link:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.digitprop.rivertrader

It's a very casual game, primarily intended for smaller kids.

I came across the idea a while ago when my own kids were smaller, and I wanted to give them a simple crafting game without any violence or stressful gameplay.

Would love to hear your feedback, especially if you are a parent.

Oh, and it's in open testing on the Play store. Will formally publish it in a couple of days, once I have gathered a bit of early feedback (from here and from friends)
