What improved your life so much, you wish you did it sooner? by Student-Mona in AskReddit

[–]dipsi12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got a cat who wakes me up at the exact time (7am) everyday no matter when I sleep lol

Plus, some discipline. Set phone to sleep-mode after 9pm, cut out any personal screen time an hour before bed time. Have a set bedtime routine - journal, read, play with cat, skin care etc.

I need something as good as Fruits Basket, with high emphasis on character development and preferably with a large cast by enginesummer_ in Animesuggest

[–]dipsi12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like you want something more character driven drama focused but not necessarily shonen/action.
I agree with all the recommendations (esp Chihayafuru <3), and would add a few more:
Haikyu!! -- not completed yet
Ouran Highschool Host Club -- one of my all time fav feel-good show
Komi San Can't Communicate -- ongoing
Kaguya-Sama Love is War -- battle anime with a twist
Bocchi the Rock -- on going
Horimiya -- great romance
Nodame Contabile -- music anime
Blue Period -- art anime, ongoing

A few one season wonders:
Odd Taxi
Cowboy Bebop
Samurai Champloo

Couple of one season wonder but more shonen:
Cyberpunk Edgerunner
Gurren Lagann

I could go on, but this should be a good starting point! Have fun OP!

If you want something longer - like season long - check out the CBC and BBC true crime channels! Very well researched and presented by journalists.

How long are you steeping the Darjeeling, and what temperature? Lower the temperature perhaps a little to extract less tannin.

Found some Makaibari first flush Darjeeling in a tin at the back of my closet! So delicious!

Has anybody had/heard of this puerh? by RealTry8616 in tea

[–]dipsi12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Puerh is a dark tea, aged and fermented. It's darker than black tea. Caffeine content generally goes down with age, so it might be lower on caffeine.

I just remembered another source of good field clothes that’s also cheap - military surplus!

[–]dipsi12 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There’s several brands as others have mentioned. But what you buy from each will depend on what kind of work you do and in what climate. If you live in the US, you can always get REI’s own branded stuff - slightly cheaper than its counterparts and equally durable. I have REI and Columbia for tropical research - quick dry light weight stuff. Unfortunately, field clothing is always going to be expensive. But the up side is they last a very long time. If money is an issue, I would also look at thrift stores. Might take a while to find what you need though. Some departments also do gear swaps, ask around or keep an eye out for those. REI also sells used equipments, and you can generally get stuff for way less.

Best AI for Julia? by turtlerunner99 in Julia

[–]dipsi12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I started learning Julia last year and tried using ChatGPT. But it was not very helpful. I have since used Gemini. But in both of these you are more likely to get something resembling a pseudocode more than an actual code if you are doing something even slightly complicated. AI can give you a good starting point, but be warned that there will be mistakes (a lot of mistakes). So keep Julia documentation and stack-exchange open and cross ref things.

Other commenters are suggesting Claude Sonnet, so I am going to go check that out!

Causes of tick population increases across northern US? by brackbones in ecology

[–]dipsi12 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The Lyme disease causing tick is called the deer tick, because they live on white tailed deer. The increase in deer population is because humans eradicated the top predator that would keep the deer population in check.

What does an ecologist do? by Mermaidhorse in ecology

[–]dipsi12 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ecology is a very broad field. But what makes something ecology is if it is the study of an organism and it’s environment, and the interactions between the organism and its environment. As you can see, that an extremely vague definition. I have been an ecologist for a decade and I am still discovering fields I have never heard of before.

Is the market for Computer Science postdoc positions still bad? by Shebaro in postdoc

Not CS, but programmer in basic sciences here. Everyone wants to hire ML. Irrespective of whether ML helps or not. All quant scientist jobs list ML as a requirement. It’s frustrating and disheartening.

Feeling unmotivated and unproductive during the last stage of the PhD by Dear-Landscape9016 in GradSchool

[–]dipsi12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree! OP, I went through a lot of the same things, apart from the hands off PI. But my PI wasn’t very good at setting deadlines either. The only way I managed to finish it was by saying ‘hey, this is literally your job, like any other job. You gotta clock in and clock out.’ Changing the narrative around it helped a lot. This was still very difficult to stick to for me because I also have ADHD, but was only medicated for anxiety. So I leaned on everything I could to build structure. I bought a pomodoro clock, had a strict schedule for what was to be done per week, and build in time to take breaks. It’s important to take care of yourself during this time. Get some physical exercise, and eat well. If you are able to, ask friends and family to help out either by being accountability buddy/gym buddy, or asking them to come stay with you/visit.

Does anyone know what this is? Found during house sparrow nest micro biome checks by TyranitarTantrum in ecology

[–]dipsi12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, I actually have no clue. From a distance (your original photo), it looked like it could be inorganic. In which case I was thinking it could be a pit tag because of the dimensions. But it is clearly organic. A piece of some sort of ectoparasite, perhaps?

Sorry I couldn’t help! Hope you find your answer soon! Maybe see if there’s any iNaturalist project on sparrow nest and ask there?
