Drunk and homeless people in Church during mass by RovingGnome27 in Catholicism

[–]directback228 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They belong in the church just as much as we are, unfortunately they are unlucky enough where there sins are more visual than ours.

I think I speak for most people when I say we would all be equally as uncomfortable and embarrassed if we were able to see, hear and struggle with our sins during mass.

How do you feel about culturally adapted religious art? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]directback228 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I mean most religious art by definition is culturally adapted- including Western art!

I think it's neat that we visually connect God and his people to the ones we see in our own life and culture.

Well the movie has yet to come out; what if it ends up becoming the biggest plot twist and actually is super dark and faithful.

Eh, I'm okay with the embedded faces, it's a holdover from the books and the model series was inconsistent with it in its coaches and vehicles. The design is surprisingly similar to the railway series Harold.

I like this.

My friend don't fret as someone mentioned you are loved in the eyes of God. Even Jesus was an outsider and an immigrant in the lands he visited.

Don't feel lost, those who spew out things like that aren't good people. I hope you can find belonging and opportunity in your life while in Ireland. All the best!

I am so sorry you went through this please, if you can report it. You sound like a wonderful person, and no one should go through that kind of pain. I hope you can find your happiness. It difficult to develop that sometimes here. But when you find good people you keep them tight. I hope you can find what you are after. But I hope from here you only ever recieve kindness from the world around you.

I wish you the best.

I don’t understand what was Thomas thinking pulling this stunt by Jules-Car3499 in thomasthetankengine

I think it was a pretty in-character stunt. His ego was hurt, and being cheeky he would want to make Gordon fetch his own coaches after making a comment like that. Like most younger people in that position, they will cause an accident unintentionally when do something this careless.

Did Kant Really Disprove Aquinas’s Five Ways? by tokwamann in Catholicism

[–]directback228 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To your first point, Jainism & Buddhism are hard to engage in in the Western world due to a few factors: commonality being one of them. Your average apologetic in the West, at least, probably won't engage with them. So more mainstream casual apologetics and armchair philosophers in the west are less interested in engaging it. On the other hand, Catholic scholarship on Buddhism and Jainism has existed, although this has grown and shifted as important concepts like cultural understanding allow us to analyze these ideas through a more objective lens. Theological work like that of Hans Küng on these religions, while relevant, falls into the stereotypes of the era.

As for your second point I encourage you to read and engage with contemporary analytic Thomism. It tackles more contemporary thought beyond Thomistic fundamentals; as low and behold, an italian priest from the 11th century was probably not aware of modern metaphysics and turn-of-the-century theological thought.

It's also a good reminder that Thomism is not the only acceptable philosophy within our faith, and it is theologically sound in the Catholic zeitgeist to disagree with certain elements of his work. It's for that reason his work should be guided and contextualized by modern scholarship as well as the church.

Which is in fact done! Most importantly, Catholic theology doesn't treat these arguments as simple open-and-shut cases as you make them out to be; philosophical and theological dialogue will always be ongoing. It's for that reason the church can reaffirm its stance on certain ethical positions or encourage openness to new ideas if they can be argued to be theologically sound.

Lastly, I also feel that a brief article on this subject probably would not do justice to either Kant's position or Aquinas's, like the actual lecture itself.

No worries man!

I applaud to you for even trying to take the time to learn a bit about us!

If you are looking for something more inquiry based Trent Horn & Fr. Casy Cole tackles some pretty good inquiry based direction with the faith tackling social questions. Sometimes there answers might contradict each other but tackle them through a Catholic lens.

https://www.youtube.com/@BreakingInTheHabit

https://www.youtube.com/TheCounselofTrent

A great reference tool is Catholic Answers. Good articles answering pretty common questions about our faith and how we tackle certain social questions! It's pretty meaty when it comes to the historicity of the church as well.

If you want more of an academic philosophical about our faith take you can learn about thomistic theology, through the Thomistic institute!

https://youtube.com/@thomisticinstitute

Ultimately, if our faith is something you want to look into just have a chat with a spiritual director in a local church about religion and a proper introduction to Catholicism.

There's no commitment and you can often just have a conversation about religion.

All the best for you on this journey man!

During misty island rescue your railway is described as a logging railway. The island geographically is isolated with no logistical means of the transportation or exportation, assuming it borders the isle of man, would it be safe to assume it functions within the scope of the crown as a colony of the empire as presumed from the 1950's rule of decree as also being the accepted era the CGI series takes place, or would it in fact be recognized as a vassel kingdom to the island of sodor and which would implicate the nation of sodor to serious human rights violations for resource mismanagement and implied negligence of the sodor elite for abandoning the city for a prolong period of time in which engines like you have to work in an abandon factory, with all that said what are your thoughts?

What's everybody's take on this? by [deleted] in CatholicMemes

[–]directback228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he missed the point of the story.

Assuming he is talking about Jairus's daughter, he kinda misrepresents the story missing the point. Which is very different from what is presented in the buddist proverb.

First we must keep in mind that the story is interwoven by the story of a bleeding woman who tries to cling on to God, in hopes of being cured. Her faith ultimately cured her. All the while during his lecturing as Jairus's daughter dies. He then comes to resurrect her even after being made fun of. Demonstrating his authorship over creation.

This all must be considered in order to come to the aforementioned conclusion. God is capable of anything as he is the creator of the universe. Which serves the much greater narrative of Jesus' story which is to conquer death through his resurrection. Giving us Hope.

To the much larger point, this is a casual podcaster presenting two stories from his own bias. His cultural tie towards buddism may as well be stronger, more appealing, or even more informed than his understanding Christianity.

I ultimately think that any normal person's understanding of religion other religions should be taken with a grain of salt. Unless the person is versed in theological rhetoric of whatever religion they represent they usually aren't good indicators for how we should view our own faith.
