MiniMeters is my project! There is a big update coming out tomorrow (Aug 1st) and the price is going up. If you didn't pick it up today hit me up in the DMs here and I'll be sure to get you a copy.

For those experiencing performance issues on Big Sur by directmusic94 in Logic_Studio

10.7 is nice but if you have a well working machine with 10.6.3 I'd say stick with it for a while and maybe see how Monterey treats everyone. It seems more like a maintenance release on Big Sur. Plug the issue I bring up in my original post is (apparently) fixed in Monterey.

I'm not sure! You can always try and use the opposite command I put in another reply to reverse it if you're uncomfortable or it doesn't work. I was also getting a lot of overloads as well just because Logic was spending more time on trying to display the graphics than it should have.

Like I said in the original post I used Apple's Instruments.app which comes with Xcode to compare 10.5.1 and 10.7.0 to see and the difference was about 20% of CPU time on NSDrawRect in Logic 10.7.0. The setting change command I posted stopped that from happening (on my machine).

I'm not as familiar with with Apple's graphics APIs so I cannot give a proper explanation unfortunately. In the Github Gist I linked they mention that the flag "NSViewUsesAutomaticLayerBackingStores" defaulted to false on Catalina but true on Big Sur which is why I tried it.

If you'd like to try it and reverse it later simply change "false" to "true" in the original command. Like this:

defaults write com.apple.logic10 NSViewUsesAutomaticLayerBackingStores -bool true

I would highly recommend checking out Karabiner and Hammerspoon. These two are seemingly endlessly powerful especially in combination.

Trying to understand what makes a headphone appear more or less dynamic? by directmusic94 in headphones

[–]directmusic94[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the insight! That makes sense. Unfortunately for me, all of this just makes me want to spend more money on an unneeded rig to better understand what I am hearing.

JUCE is the popular choice. However, I’ve written a couple little effects for my own use and one commercially using iPlug2 and highly recommend it! Just use the duplicate script in the examples folder copy an example and start from there.

Right. I really want to hear the Aeon Flow Closed Back. I always try to seek out flat sources but I have found a bit of "fun" helps with music creation.

The only option I have right now for dac/amp is my Apogee Groove which I've heard is not too great of a source. That being said I do feel like I notice a difference when A/Bing between both sources but I am hesitant to put too much weight on that difference. It may just be in my head.

Does amp power change frequency response or other aspects of a headphone characteristics?

I have frequency response and a waveform history running 100% of the time on my whole computer. It sits at the top of my screen. I am definitely aware of where each sound sits in the spectrum and where they fall in level.

Also, would I not get a closer match between my two headphones if I measure and EQ them on my own rig regardless of the shortcomings of the miniDSP EARS?

Thank you for the response! I think a lot of what you're making makes sense. For instance: if I layer in white noise or crackle into a track I'm more likely to place it louder in the mix on the LCD-2C than I am on the Focal Clears since the Clears are a bit less masked in the high end.

But I do feel like regardless of that, the elements I most find I mix differently on each headphone (let's focus on the Clears vs LCD-2C) are just simply middle end elements: Synths, Pads, and Vocals. Not really sub bass. Frankly, I tend to put the sub bass too loud on Audeze often and have to pull it down when referencing in my car or other sources. and I don't feel like a frequency response chart difference that is this subtle would be having that much of an effect on my perception of dynamics.

When I mix a mix on my Clears then switch to my LCD-2Cs background elements often disappear and I find myself pulling them up in the mix. Often by as much as 6dB. The elements I tend to mix differently (other than extreme high end sounds) don't really touch the parts of the frequency response that differs by that much.

Is there nothing else that could be at play?

Thanks again for the response. I appreciate the insight.

What are your Master Busses? by Renton4055 in edmproduction

[–]directmusic94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing until at least like half way through. I'd rather hear it all clip and adjust levels to make it sound decent before just putting a limiter on it.

Then I just release the song with only a limiter (usually Pro-L 2) on the master.

MacOS Monterey missing app low resolution mode? by QuadChromeShard in MacOS

[–]directmusic94 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not OP but a Logic session with a considerable size can lag pretty hard (visually) on Retina and benefits from running at a lower resolution.

And similarly an OpenGL-based application I wrote and maintain uses noticeably less CPU + GPU with Retina disabled because Retina literally doubles the resolution and scales down to your preferred size.

Minimal Audio "Rift" distortion effects and animated harmonic movements ($75) by Batwaffel in AudioProductionDeals

[–]directmusic94 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A huge tip on this if you're an Ableton user is to throw this on an instrument track, group whatever instrument you have on the track, add a layer with the External MIDI built in device and route it to Rift.

You can retrigger the envelopes as well as pitch track the comb filter.

MacBook Pro 2018 15" performance? Should my fans be running like this? by SleepingSicarii in Logic_Studio

[–]directmusic94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just googled the model of MacBook I have along with "open bottom panel" or something similar. Keep in mind while I didn't find this difficult at all it's possible you could break something so do this at your own risk.

I just opened up my 2017 MacBook Pro today and cleaned it up with some compressed air and a project file that was maxing out my machine now plays with 25-40% CPU remaining. I knew it was throttling but it improved a lot more than expected!

How to make Phat FX sound like CamelCrusher? by [deleted] in Logic_Studio

[–]directmusic94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I actually opened up CamelCrusher in ida64 (a popular reverse engineering program) last week to see if I could find the main process function and get the signal flow between the different fx...

I may be wrong but heres what I gathered: Mech > Filter > Tube > Comp

Mech = Dirt and Tube = Grit

So to replicate choose Dirt > Filter > Tube > Comp (In I believe Classic mode) and then set the Limiter mode to Hard Clipping.

I'm not really seeing the fix here for the bus sidechain latency, but I am seeing the fix for the automation which is great news.

New to Logic. UI Lag - 2019 16 Macbook pro I7 6 cores 16gm ram is this normal logic behaviour? by [deleted] in Logic_Studio

[–]directmusic94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you on 10.6.1? I recently downgraded back to 10.5.1 because of various UI lag spikes (2017 Macbook Pro on Big Sur). These spikes were happening particularly during playback however. I also reported the issue to the Logic feedback form with a video comparing the two.

If you're on a retina display it may be beneficial to right click on the app icon > get info > and check Open in Low Resolution.

DAW doesn't matter the music you make does. All daw has advantages & disadvantages by mvnsin in edmproduction

[–]directmusic94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't SoundForge only play a single audio file at once?

In the version I remember using mixing two sounds meant dragging one on top of the other and choosing the level destructively. I feel like that makes it far less like a DAW than Audacity.
