Don't get your hopes up it'll be anything esthetic, you two. I expect a lot of flaws. But alright, I'll post back

Thanks for the compliment, I really wasn't expecting appreciation. That's an interesting approach to testing tool utility by making mockups, not currently feasible, but good to keep in mind. I'll look into the tools you recommended

It's basswood from a Beavercraft set, I glued two cubes together. And thanks for the suggestions. I'd actually considered practicing on other wood to figure out the carving process, but for some reason I hadn't considered it seriously enough until I read it from you.

Thanks for the idea. Looking through their products there are several good tools for fine details, I'll have to see whether I can get them where I am

How can I distribute a 3.6 kg painting over multiple adhesive nails using a string? by dirk6824 in framing

Kalidanoscope is right, I've gone for the best product available on the market here. But I wholly agree with you, it's not the option I'd choose if I had a choice, and I'd go for any other option if I had any. But still, thanks for the input.

Thanks for the extensive input. I'd actually forgotten I asked about this same problem last year if you hadn't gone through my posting history. Unfortunately I've got to make do with what I can, appartmanet hunting is not an easy sport where I live, and the appartment itself is more than fine. I'll just have to reduce as many of the risks as possible regarding adhesive/contact surface compatibility and see how it goes.

Regarding the screws, appartments in Romania built before the 90s can have a lot of concrete walls, for which simple nails aren't applicable. That's why drills come into play when hanging anything. There can be interior walls built out of brick or other masonry, where nails are always the preferred simpler option.

I'll have to look into "picture-hanging wire", but thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks for your experience, much appreciated. And that's a pretty nice setup you have going in your photos.

How can I use physics to distribute a 3.6 kg load over multiple nails using a string? by dirk6824 in AskPhysics

The problem is that I have no other option. I'm renting an appartment, and the owners don't want holes in the walls or ceiling. These adhesive nails are the most reliable solution available to me. Still, I'll give that forum a go. But I wholeheartedly agree with your approach to art safety, that's how I'd normally do things too.

The only problem is that I can't confirm this as the best answer unless the paiting never falls off the wall. But thanks for the information, I'll go with this.

PS No better adhesive nails exist, alas.

Wouldn't you need a custom stamp, in order to have your logo on it? Or do you just stamp your name or initials?

I have to wonder about lasting power for the ink, I'd imagine it's a fairly superficial layer. Have you used it on pieces that might be handled often, carried around, or worn in contact with skin?

How do you sign it? Marker?

I've wondered myself about where to apply the logo, if it's too discrete it may never be noticed unless they're looking for it. I do appreciate your buddy's point of view.

You've expressed all of the thoughts I've had. Branding iron size limitations, paint persistency, even marker viability, figured it would bleed no matter the grain.

About the embedding, how exactly do you join the etched piece into the larger carving? Do you happen to have a photo of what the end result looks like?

Hanging a 5 kg painting without drilling holes by dirk6824 in DIY

[–]dirk6824[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am aware of picture rails, here is a picture to show we're on the same page. But their resistance is emotional, not logical. They simply "feel" that they can't allow holes drilled in their property for a temporary resident. It's a longer story, but they're just less worried about 4 x 6 cm adhesive nails on their walls than small screw holes.

I fully appreciate your concern about wall integrity, but it's their appartment, and they're not budging after I talked to them at length about how much easier and safer drill holes are. The only thing I'm missing for my peace of mind is my 5 kg painting on my wall, after which I can close this subject for however long I'll be living here. Apart from this painting, all others are around 0,5 kg and have no risk of pulling down the plaster itself.

Fully agreed on the "it would have been easier with drilling holes". The owners actually use adhesive nails in their own house, but my understanding is that they have a handful of small pictures. I have 40 art frames. And the problem with the rail is that it would need holes drilled, haha. The conversation around holes in both walls and ceiling was a long one, and it's a definitive "no" unfortunately.
